"Chord Chopper" meaning you can play the basics but cheat a bit to get the sound. Fingerings are not accurate.....all the time...... but most non players think you're really good.
"Intermediate" meaning you can hold your own against most casual players but still not perfect and not overly concerned about it. Most non players think you are really really good
"Purist To Core" meaning if you can't play it perfectly note for note everytime it isn't worth it. Most non players think you are a pain in the butt.
As for me........I am a Chord Chopper verging into the Intermediate level. I am the singer in our band and fancy fingerings + singing do not mix for me. I can carry the melody fine playing rhythm.... but leads are not my bag in public....That's Craigs job...
In my basement I am Jimi however....

I agree.... I think you have said it. Regardless of our individual status on the skill scale when we affect someone with the music we play we have accomplished something.
When we play "Wonderful Tonight" I see couples see couples genuinely enjoying our music and each other. That is a great feeling. Well put Stringman

Too true, Stringman...but may I add that there are some other things that also tell you that you are on the right track...
When other musicians whose playing ability you respect show you that same level of respect...

I personally still consider myself a 'hack' guitarist. I do not learn things by rote, note-for-note, exactly like the record. I absorb, I experiment, I twist, I tweak...I'm lazy about practicing, since I don't want things to be 'automatic'. It really is, to me, about playing with feeling, and if the notes flow from the creative side of your brain...there is feeling; if they come from the logical side, it is just 'technique'...hard to tell at times...there is, obviously a balance between the two...
I do not ever expect or intend to achieve the skill level of Di Meola, Holdsworth, Howe, Eric Johnson, Vai, Christian, Burrell, Atkins, etc. What I do want is for people who hear me play to say"...hmmm...I can't put my finger on it exactly, but this guy's good!" and every now and then, that happens.
