How would you rate your playing skill level?

Would you rate yourself as a.....

"Chord Chopper" meaning you can play the basics but cheat a bit to get the sound. Fingerings are not accurate.....all the time...... but most non players think you're really good.

"Intermediate" meaning you can hold your own against most casual players but still not perfect and not overly concerned about it. Most non players think you are really really good

"Purist To Core" meaning if you can't play it perfectly note for note everytime it isn't worth it. Most non players think you are a pain in the butt.

As for me........I am a Chord Chopper verging into the Intermediate level. I am the singer in our band and fancy fingerings + singing do not mix for me. I can carry the melody fine playing rhythm.... but leads are not my bag in public....That's Craigs job...

In my basement I am Jimi however....

Re: How would you rate your playing skill level?

I don't like to grade myself. Lets say I am a guitar player trying to be a better guitar player. Somewhere in the lower 1/4 of the skill/achivement level.

To 6tring - I don't think "perfect" belongs in music. I'm a perfectionist so I know what I'm talking about. :smileywink:

Re: How would you rate your playing skill level?

I'd put myself in the middle one...

I'm not too fussed about all the lead wankery, but I'm getting better at it.

Loads of non-players come up to me after shows and tell me I'm great. I just smile. And lots of guitar players come up to me and compliment me on my tone. For me, it's not about how fast I play, or how many weird scales I use, it's about honesty. If a song needs a widdle, I put it in, if it doesn't need it, I don't put it in. Simple as that, If I can't play a certain passage of a cover, I leave it out.. I don't attempt to play it and fuck it up just to show I can NEARLY do it.

Re: How would you rate your playing skill level?

I would simply say I'm competent though in my area my stock has DEFINATELY risen. I went from being the #1 guitar instructor with no band but NUMEROUS students playing in them thus giving me credibility to playing in a one of the top International cover bands to getting picked up out of obscurity & doing an international tour so that was great. Now I get offers all the time, albeit from Tejano/Mexican bands I don't like. As for my playing itself I like to do everything NOTE FOR NOTE. I can do EVH, Randy, Satch note for not. Can't do Malmsteen or Petrucci but don't have to for my style. Also I'm VERY much into getting a good tone which is something very few here bother doing. Also I would say I'm a pretty good performer in terms of getting attention when needed. Very fluid style ala Lynch or DiMartini. Still have a LONG way to go in my book though. Goal for this year focus on my rhythm chops more, jazz & funk rhythms & work hard at my new band. I dont' get asinine about doing stuff note for note with other people & I'm very laid back so people tend to like me. Also I don't show off much unless someone walks into my store & pisses me then I'll grab & axe & hand em their head on a platter.

Re: How would you rate your playing skill level?

I may rate a special category, I'm wonderfully ignorant about music for one so immersed in it for so long.

1. Who else do you know who has been playing guitar for over thirty years, and can only remember the names of the two "E" strings on the guitar?, and that's because it's a "two-for-one" deal. (This is but one example of many).

2. I never know what key I play in, I just play.

3. Until very recently, I never knew if my guitar was tuned to pitch, again, I just played.

4. I am either the best of the bad guitar players, or the worst of the good players, kind of a musical skill purgatory, and I ain't getting out anytime soon.

5. Until very recently, I actually used the term "Fuzzbox", and "wah-wah pedal".

6. I can fingerpick the sweetest, slowest, "Tennessee Waltz" in the world on my Telecaster, and I'm proud of it.

7. Just last week, someone tried to explain to me what "Crunch" was when describing the sounds an amplifier might make.

8. I'm sorry, I forgot what the question was.

Re: How would you rate your playing skill level?

There really has to be some stage between "intermediate" and "purist to the core". I'm not a great instrumentalist. I can play solos on my balalajka, decent slide solos on guitar, but nothing amazing. I can comp myself with some strumming and simple fingerpicking on guitar, fills and chord stabs on balalajka.

None of this is anything special on its own. But (he said proudly ) ) I can sing while I do it. I'm not a great singer either but it works for what I do. And I can pull this off and make it into a full night with five sets if I have to. With a band. Without a band I could still entertain you for three sets. Having a repertoire is also a skill.

Re: How would you rate your playing skill level?

It's not how fast you can play, or how many different chords you know. It's about capturing the poetry of the music and playing with feeling and touching people's souls.

When you can make somebody laugh or cry, or send a chill down their spines, or give them goose bumps, you've arrived.
"When I gave food to the poor, they called me a saint. When I asked why the poor were hungry, they called me a communist." - Mother Teresa.

"If fascism ever comes to America, it will come wrapped in the American flag and carrying the cross of Jesus"- Sinclair Lewis.

'Ketchup is a vegetable" - Ronald Reagan.

"Let's all hope Olbermann gets put in the hospital for something serious fairly soon" - G.Z. Sound

I agree.... I think you have said it. Regardless of our individual status on the skill scale when we affect someone with the music we play we have accomplished something. :smileyhappy: When we play "Wonderful Tonight" I see couples see couples genuinely enjoying our music and each other. That is a great feeling.

Stringman nailed the answer to this one for me....

But!

I'm definately getting better.

If only it didn't take SO much time and effort. Perhaps steroids would help?

Too true, Stringman...but may I add that there are some other things that also tell you that you are on the right track...

When other musicians whose playing ability you respect show you that same level of respect...:smileyhappy:

When pros come and ask to sit in with you...:smileyvery-happy:

When pros come and ask you to sit in with them... :smileyvery-happy:

I personally still consider myself a 'hack' guitarist. I do not learn things by rote, note-for-note, exactly like the record. I absorb, I experiment, I twist, I tweak...I'm lazy about practicing, since I don't want things to be 'automatic'. It really is, to me, about playing with feeling, and if the notes flow from the creative side of your brain...there is feeling; if they come from the logical side, it is just 'technique'...hard to tell at times...there is, obviously a balance between the two...

I do not ever expect or intend to achieve the skill level of Di Meola, Holdsworth, Howe, Eric Johnson, Vai, Christian, Burrell, Atkins, etc. What I do want is for people who hear me play to say"...hmmm...I can't put my finger on it exactly, but this guy's good!" and every now and then, that happens.

Re: How would you rate your playing skill level?

I probably rate as a "chord chopper", although I'm more of a finger picker. In my eyes, I'm not real good but a hell of a lot better than I gave myself credit for having the potential to when I first started out. I'm not necessarily a note for note guy...I generally play what I hear and sometimes what I feel if I like that better. I've never been able to settle on one hobby, let alone one instrument, long and exclusively enough to get real good.

Never played in a band, not that I haven't tried, but since I started playing in my 30's, it's always been hard to find people that are on a similar skill level that are interested in playing in a band. Most guys my age that are interested in playing in a band have been playing a lot longer than I. Consequently, I'm a one man band...I do some recordings by myself and play all the instruments, however badly...drums, keys, guitars and bass and occasionally mandoin.....all for my ears only however, until I do one that I think is worthy of other ears.
Thanks, and rock on!
