But there WAS a time when "Fooling Yourself" was a good song to do.  Here's a recording of an old band of mine doing it around about 1979.

Re: Too Much Time On My Hands

[ Edited ]

I've stayed away from this thread but... hey, it's slow so...

I was a Styx fan as a sophomore in HS. But, frankly, their overzealousness sort of wore thin real quick for me. Coupled with a faux "good singer" who has some unbearable singing ticks... no thank you. So, currently, I am not a fan and haven't been for almost 40 years.

Having said that, Too Much Time On My Hands seems like a great choice to dance up. Straighten out any Styx "cleverness" and nail it in a fun way for the dancers. I could see playing that well and having it kill. It might benefit from a recent song to mash it up with. Something Dance-y and Gagaesque.

Re: Too Much Time On My Hands

What synth is that, Dave? Sounds kinda like an Arp Odyssey, like at the end of Spaceship Superstar.

Thanks for posting, I don't know the tune, but I enjoyed it.

The lead synth was a Mini-Moog.  The "pad" synth was an Arp String Ensemble.

I'm glad you enjoyed it.  If you like the song,  you should check out the original Styx version.  MUCH, MUCH better.  I can only listen to us doing it by reminding myself how young we were at the time (17-18).  Decent harmony vocals though.

Dave, I thought that sounded great. Now days you couldn't find many coverbands that could do as good as job no matter what there age.

I much prefer the Southpark version of Come Sail Away over the actual version.

Re: Too Much Time On My Hands

This song is in our list and we play it frequently, gets a great reaction for us. Our bass player does the intro with a envelope filter and his bass fuzzed up a little. Works pretty well.

Re: Too Much Time On My Hands

We debuted Too Much Time On My Hands for the first time last night and I'd say it was mediocre.  I think we need to speed it up just a bit from the record tempo.  We play almost strictly second generation classic rock / arena rock so we do a few Styx tunes to include Renegade and Blue Collar.  I'd would say Renegade consistently gets the best reponse although Blue Collar is not bad.  We actually opened up with blue collar for a few months awhile back.  I don't have any video of Too Much Time yet but if anyone wants to check it out, below is a link of us doing Blue Collar

Thanks, appreciate that. Fortunately for us people have been real receptive to what we are doing, actually even more so than I thought they would be.
