Re: Things people say to musicians that they should'nt

I used to get some real winners around the Portland, OR area. One Friday we were in a place that was trying us out for the first time. It had a little bit of a rough clientele. They even kind of liked to intimidate you for sport. I was setting up my stuff, and this guy comes over to me and says: " I know already you guys aren't going to go over in this place. Because your guitars are too clean."

It just occurred to me that there's a comeback. "Oh, they won't be by the end of the night." Dang!

Producer: Hey, stop for a second. Hey, you know that really cool sound you were just making with your effects and the feeback?"

Guitarist: Yeah-yeah!!!

Producer: Yeah, well... when I hit RECORD, stop doing that...

Re: Things people say to musicians that they should'nt

My dad has a really cool Fender Les Paul. (oh boy, I’m going to be dumber by the end of this conversation. :smileytongue:oke: )

I can beat Yngwie on expert!!! (First time I heard that one, I had not even heard of Guitar Hero. WTF? )

Do play “acoustical” or electric guitar?

My friend is really good, he can play Eruption.

Wow, you guys were better than I was expecting! (Great thanks and all :thu: … but you assumed we sucked I guess? )

(From a non-musician) What is all that stuff? –pointing to by pedal board and/or rack- (Oh geez, where do I even start with an answer they’d understand? )

EDIT: One thing people say all the time that really rubs me the wrong way:

"You guys looked like you were having fun up there."

Anyone else get this? I know it's meant to be some sort of compliment, but I'd rather if they said "You guys played some really good music up there."

I actually enjoy hearing this one… Coming from a non-musician it tells me it was “mission accomplished” for the show.

Re: Things people say to musicians that they should'nt

I work in a place that has live bands every night, and some of them look like they’d rather be anywhere than on stage getting paid to play music.

When a band of professionals comes in and looks like they’re having fun (whether they are or not), the audience has fun. I always tell them (compliment them on it even). They band looks happy, the crowd is happy, the owner is happy.

If they sound great, I’ll tell them. I’ll say “You guys sounded great,” or “You guys kept the dance floor packed.” I’ll even make it a point to compliment the sound guy if the mix is good.

I’ll If they suck, I don’t say anything.

I’ve also learned that every musician loves to talk about his gear (before the set or during breaks, anyway). After their set they’re ready to get out of there. I’ve even had sounds guys come into my office and say “Come and check out our new board!”
The best piece of advice I ever got was when John Mayer told me, "Don't be a name dropper."

Re: Things people say to musicians that they should'nt

Don't know if this has been posted or not... "My husband(or friend/boyfriend/whatever) plays guitar. Can he sit in?"
I recently had a bizarre variant of this one; we were well into in our second set and everyone was having a good time, we had a party table up front where a fair amount of lovely ladies were congregating. I watched some Hawaiian shirt wearing weirdo walk up and make himself at home right there to the obvious dismay of said ladies. Before he managed to scare all of them off he gets my attention, points to himself and shouts "Guess Vocals?"

I say what I want to musicians...and care very little as to their feelings and sensibilities...most are not deserving of that type of respect.

No way. I've known way too many bands who would take you up on the 7-8:30 offer (or even if you meant to type 8-8:30) and make way more trouble than they're worth.

I wouldn't do it either, sarcasm son.
