Yesterday we did shipping up to Boston; I lost my leg
Don't realize till the middle of the song
Ouch! I was just talking about that the other day - that we'd probably not be able to do that one for a while.

Dropkick Murphys haven't stopped playing it. Why should they?
The lyrics (written by Woody Guthrie) are about a sailor losing his leg on a ship. How is the a problem?

As someone from Boston, there's no reason to pull that song -- quite the opposite. This city is fierce, and the Dropkicks are the unofficial band of Boston. They're local, they're visible, and their songs, especially "Shipping Off to Boston," are kind of like our battle cries.
I've got a gig next weekend with my old rock cover band, and we're planning on playing the song twice over the course of the night.
Bostonians, as a whole, aren't soft people. We're the type of people who would prefer when you get to the line "to find my wooden leg!", you sing it louder and wave your middle finger in the air instead of skipping the tune.
