Re: Latest top 40

I'd say "Locked Out of Heaven" and "One More Night" are winners for us.

Locked Out of Heaven is working well for us

Its not really really new but if you can stand it:

What Makes You Beautiful - One Direction works well for us also.

Green Day - "Let Yourself Go" is the last thing we added.

Locked Out still works well.

The two Black Keys songs kill, Gold on the Ceiling and Lonely Boy.

It's not new but we just also added "She's a Genius" by Jet. Went over well last 2 weeks.

Locked Out is working OK for us, the band is really on it with all of the little parts and things that make the song interesting. Out of the last 4 gigs only 2 of them were appropriate to play it but it went over well on both of those. We broke out Try by Pink last gig and it got a decent reaction. It's more of a 1st set tune based on the tempo, but our singer (and the band) kills it. Both of them have fun keyboard parts, with the filter sweeps, bleeps and blips, pads fading in and out. Fun stuff for me in that regard.

We also learned Head Over Heels by Tears for Fears. Talk about a fun song to play. Lots of cool keys going on there as well. I see this being like Don't You Forget About Me, 80's anthem type of song.

My Live Gear: Yamaha S70XS, Nord Stage Compact, Moog LP, QSC K10, rack of goodies.

I always liked Head Over Heels but what I have seen with our crowds is the 80s stuff works less and less. Don't You Forget About Me was in our set with the last band for around a year... it was filler and that band attracted an older crowd.

With Ostrich Hat we are pulling more younger people and the 80s stuff we have are not setlist staples anymore. Of course YMMV

We ran into that last night - ended up playing for a younger crowd and missed the mark with the first set. Opened with some 90's rock and we were doing fine until we slipped in a block of classic rock (80s) tunes. Lots of people headed out for a smoke and some people even left. By the time we started the current pop after that, we lost a lot of people.

Unfortunately, most venues are now requesting 20-minute breaks instead of 30 so we seem to be running short on songs and we haven't had time to work up enough new material to be able to cut out the classic rock - although we are getting closer.

However, 80's *rock* songs like Any Way You Want It, Rock You Like a Hurricane, Rebel Yell, Sweet Child, You Shook Me, and Don't Stop still work. But Your Love and 867-5309, not so much anymore.

We are doing and getting requests for more and more 90s stuff... Not so much the grunge 90s stuff though... very few if any requests for Pearl Jam, AIC or nirvana.

We do get requets for 3rd Eye blind, eve 6, barenaked ladies and so on

We do You Shook Me on occasion. Kinda neat with an acoustic guitar LOL. and 30 minute breaks? wow.. that would be nice. If we are off for 20 minutes its LONG.

Yeah, Two 20 minute breaks for a four hour show. We'll play two long sets with a 10 minute break if we only have to go three hours.

Two 20 minute breaks for a 3.5-4 hour show is par for the course around these parts.

We're using Head Over Heels as a set opener, it gets people's attention for sure. Same with Bennie and the Jets. People aren't going to dance to it but they definitely react.
