Re: mesa mkiv vs mkv my thoughts

My IVa was brighter than my V as well, both equipped with 6l6's. I find my V superior to my IVa in every way except for the lead ch. With my V, I can cop the IV lead tone close enough, so I don't miss my IV much.
mine is also IVa gonna try swapping cabs and tubes next and see what happens. if I have time today I will record them both as they are so you guys can hear what I'm talking about

Re: mesa mkiv vs mkv my thoughts

V or IV, they both sound great. Trying to say which is better is like trying to say which of Salma Hayek's boobs you like more! C'mon.

Personally, I think I'd take a V over a IV... come it is one more, so it is better. Now here's a new tune I'm working on... I call it Ride My Love Pump.

I owned the V for a little while and sold it to buy the IVa and played that for a year and sold it and went back to the V, im really happy with my V and have no plans on selling it.
for the way i dial in my amps i can get the V pretty close to the IV lead but not perfect, i would say its about 90% there but thats close enough for me because i liked the cleans and crunch ch better on the V.

Yes, words out of my mouth. Sometimes I love crunch mode on ch 2 more than ch3.

Re: mesa mkiv vs mkv my thoughts

the IV has more sag than the V.

Is this so with the V on Variac as well?

oh shit didn't even try that. I like variac when using crunch in channel 2 it does loosen things up a bit. good call didn't even think of it.

Re: mesa mkiv vs mkv my thoughts

All this talk about power tubes and not one mention about whats in the preamp? I know its a stretch but put all the same tubes in each, run them though the same cab, then give us MOAR clips! I used extreme most of the time. While its no Recto, it just felt HUGE compared to IV and C+. Obviously the IV and Extreme modes are based off a IV. Do you pull the presence on the IV? "EXTREME traces its’ lineage back to a feature on the MARK IV that resided on the Channel 3 (LEAD) PRESENCE control of that amp. A pull-pot fitted there allowed removal of negative feedback from the power section and unleashed the pent-up fury of the Simul-Class™ output." I think the IV does sound bad ass but the so so rhythm channel has is limitations for live use. The V can have 3 great sounds at the push of a button.

That and that eq coupling cap that boogie did off vs the original graphic eq speced IIC+s is one of the points in the V. This cap exists in its normal value in the IV mode though. They did it off because the IIC+ mode was based on their favourite IIC+ which was non graphic eq speced. Another weird point for them is the fact that they integrated the input volume knob and lead drive together or to be specific, they have hard set the input volume to 7 or something vs the older boogies.
"is this tone obtainable using the HD500 or Axe Fx? Overall, for convenience and volume control, should I buy the Axe Fx over actual tube amps? I don't plan on playing loud; just playing at home and recording on my Mac. Thanks man, you are awesome!
