Oh god, the Blue Doodoo. I think there was a red one too, a Sammy Hagar signature amp. First it was "Red Voodoo", then "blue voodoo sammy hagar signature" or some crap like that. What a horrible sounding amp. Actually, original V series aside, pretty much every Crate product I've ever heard has sounded like a bag of ass.
Worst tone I've ever heard in my life was when I was 16 jamming at a friend's house. We had both only been playing about a year, Vai's Passion & Warfare was huge and had everyone excited, but this kid could only afford a Gorilla 1x8" pratice amp and a shitty import Strat copy of some kind. Basically, the Gorilla + cheap Strat copy combo sounded like cat puke, of the like I haven't heard before or since. And that's a good thing. :freak:
Honorable mention goes to Korn's first couple albums when it was such a novelty to even have a 7-string tuned low, they didn't even put much effort into good tone at all (or if they did, they failed). They didn't get much better later on either, but the first album was really awful.

It sounds like Randy Rhoads is playing through some cheapass little practice combo turned up full blast with a distortion box hooked up to it. I've checked a few web pages outlining his gear setup, and they all claim that he played through Marshall stacks. But years ago someone told me he played through a little Roland Cube amp cranked full blast and with a distortion box on some of the early recordings. It's a crappy sound nonetheless.
The best sound Rhoads ever got is on a live EP release of 'Mr Crowley', 'You Said It All' and 'Suicide Solution'. He is definitely playing through the Marshalls on that recording. It's a real fat tone with lots of middle, just like a Marshall stack sounds when it's cranked real loud.
RR mic'd Marshalls for that, but also recorded direct into the board as part of the multi-layered sound.
Roland Cube? No. You''l have to point me to a picture of and an article about RR using a Roland Cube that existed back in 1980.
