I'm looking to buy or assemble a little power amp / speaker combo...

... to run my Roland VG-88 through.  So I don't need tubes, don't need a preamp section, don't need anything but two 12's or two 10's and a stereo power amp, maybe 60 watts per channel.  As lightweight as possible of course.

One option is I could just put a stereo power amp in a SKB case for the head and use a 2-12 or 2-10 cab under it.  Maybe a Rocktron Velocity 100 amp would be enough, though it's only 40w per channel into 8 ohm speakers.  Also, I can't seem to find how heavy it is.

The other option of using a little speaker / amp combination like the Tech21 power Engine 60 would be fine, except so far as I can tell no one makes one with a stereo power amp and two 12" or 10" speakers.

Anything out there I'm not aware of?  Any of you guys tried either Rocktron unit?  What did you think of it?

Thanks!

Terry D.

A more appropriate question would be where has the Amp forum gone to. :smileyvery-happy:

Anyway, it might be worth checking in on the Rocktron Velocity 300, as well. And if you're wanting a bit of tube-ish coloration, you can always check into the old Mosvalve amps.

Another idea if you might change your mind on it needing to have stereo inputs: I used to run a Sansamp PSA-1 preamp though a Roland JC120 212 amp and had good results -- even better when I closed the back of the combo. It was a very clean-sounding amp without much coloration.

First thing that comes to mind is the Crate Powerblock.
Cheap, loud enough, and super compact.

And yeah we've become a ghost town over here, most folks moved onto a new forum.

Re: I'm looking to buy or assemble a little power amp / speaker combo...

Thanks everyone for all the excellent suggestions. :smileyhappy:

I have a short fuse on this before our S. Texas tour begins, so my short term solution was to buy a little used Crate Powerblock.  I have a MosValve rack amp I use with my guitar rig but lately it's been getting pressed into service to power monitor speakers as my singer has no monitor system.  I *think* the little Powerblock will power my two passive wedges well enough to get us through these shows.  If not, I'm also taking some IEM systems (which are illegal now).

After that I might spring for the Rocktron Velocity 300 rack unit.  I'm going to press my singer to purchase a powered monitor with all the money she makes from this tour which should resolve my problem.

Thanks again for all your suggestions, I looked into every single one of them. :smileyhappy:

I hope everything works out well and that the tour turns out great. 8)

The Powerblock is a cool little thing to have around! I've even used it as a monitor amp a number of times when in a pinch.

That's exactly what I plan to do with it.  Since the singer (who makes most of the money) can't spare some $$$ to buy a powered monitor, I'll just bring my two ancient Sunn 16 ohm wedges and use the PowerBlock to power them up.  Too quiet?  Oh well!  :smileywink:

Many recommendations for DIY amps or cabs with amps built in:

Take your pick. Cheap enough. Get a board and power supply. Connect your preamp using an adaptor or hard wire the inputs. Guys are using these with modelers.

Re: I'm looking to buy or assemble a little power amp / speaker combo...

I'm pretty high up on the stereo FX chain...but are you sure that's what you want to do? I have found that yes...it does sound better to ME when I have a stereo setup on stage, but the actual real advantage to the listener/audience was minimal. Many rooms don't even run true stereo. And by the time the sound got to most listeners, there wasn't any "Stereo".

Just food for thought, though you've probably already chewed and digested your plan. Two combos or Tech 21 engines sound awesome onstage!

Shure PSM400 and some Shure PSM200.  The FCC auctioned off the frequencies they were using to the highest bidder and now all PSM400s and some PSM200s are illegal bricks.  Fucking bastards, musicians treated like dirt as usual.

BTW, I *love* my Crate PowerBlock!  Freakin amazing!
