Here's another "hack job" PTP...FYI it's a Matchless.

Matchless stuff looks sloppier than the Vero (although it's still hardly a rat's nest). PTP is inherently less visually sexy than a nicely done turret board, but the amp in the auction actually looks pretty well executed.

That being said, $5K for a juiced up Bassman is insane.

Re: 5k map delivers elite gut shots

The PTP job looks fine, but the price is just off the charts insane. The box is even made of cheap maple plywood with a thin birdseye veneer. Look on the sides and corner where the veneer has actually chipped off. For 5K the builder couldn't use a plank of real birdseye so it doesn't look terrible when you bump it on something? Beyond that, it's just a Fender Tweed clone with a few mods and very standard off the shelf components. No real thought or circuit design went into this. What is the buyer paying for, exactly?

Guess the ebay price is fitting. Strap yourself in for another amplifier from Vero

I still think it looks like shit.. but at least matchless has a proven sound to go with it... and is not $5k.

That's not PTP either. The amp in that pic is constructed using terminal strips. Though it may not be apparent at first, it's actually very similar to turretboard or eyelet board.

It appears you're not really understanding what you're looking at. Sounds like a company could make an amp with the cheapest components available and as long as they wired it on a turret board with 90* bends you'd be peeing your pants.

Not as easy as turretboard (or terminal strips for that matter).

Why? Exactly!

A semi-decent PCB is miles ahead of an improperly designed turret or terminal amp.

Right angle bends and straight component legs mean jack shit if the wrong components are sitting next to each other.

Re: 5k map delivers elite gut shots

Pretty much. I think that the theory is that the wiring is as direct as it can be, enhancing tonez, but the fact is that for the most part a properly designed amp of any construction type can sound equally awesome. I personally prefer the stability of turret strips/boards, and they're still pretty easy to maintain.

Re: 5k map delivers elite gut shots

But back on topic. Anything is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It's a nice example of an Art Deco cabinet with what's probably a good amp inside. Nothing mind blowing, but good. 5K still seems a bit steep to me, but if he gets that for it then good for him.
