New Resonator Day!
National Style O 12 fret. My bride came into a few bucks and bought it for me. I can't even begin to say how grateful I am for her.
First thing I'm going to learn..."Romeo and Juliet", then some Blind Willie Johnson tunes.

Pretty, love to have one. Play her in good health.

Hmm. It looks kinda like a resunator. Maybe a reasonator. No I got it! It's a resanater.

Damn dude, that's nice. Youve got some wife!

You've got the pick of the litter - both the reso and your wife.

So, you gonna keep it in standard tuning? Got a slide? Gonna try some bottleneck? Don't buy a slide until you talk to us. There are some irritating things people don't think of and spend money on all sorts of crap. We can help. At least I can help, not sure of the others, but there's gotta be a few other savvy bottleneck users around here.
Tune it in D, "vestapool" to start...... if you were going to experiment with different tunings, that is. My opinion only, My desire is that it's not offensive or unwelcome.

So far I've been playing it in Open G, but I'm sure that I'll eventually get to all the tunings...

You bet'cha! I've got a couple of slides. My favorite so far is this one...

Never owned or played one but congratulations and Happy New (Shiny Metal) Guitar Day. Love the back. Be sure to post a clip or two once you get the hang of it a little bit.

Not at all. Thanks!
The "Do tell!" part, slides are one of the accessories that a lot of guitarists purchase without giving thought to materials or their personal finger size. Sure, a spark plug socket makes a few happy, a piece of broken bottle makes a few think Robert Johnson would simply love this, but if ol' Bobby had his choice, I'm sure he'd get something a little more refined.
The slide should fit your chosen finger snug enough to not fall off when you hang your hand down, but loose enough that if you jerked it slightly, it would fall off. Ideally, it should be as long as your chosen finger, not longer. So there you go, a simple guide to fitting one. Ring size is a good start, check Diamond Bottleneck,
http://www.diamondbottlenecks.com/DB08/index.asp
for a bit more on sizing advice and materials. Freeman mentioned Tribotone, and that's a great, and interesting slide, but there are a few more that make a great bottleneck for a tad less. You can go on to eBay and get a Willy's slide, but it's pretty cheap, and having used one, it is. Not smooth, seam still evident, not very heavy, lots of noise. Some folks like that though, and you may like a primitive slide for that nasty, unrefined and noisy sound.
The Tribotone slides (got 2) have a surface made of a synthetic material that imparts very little noise. Diamond makes a superb glass slide( got 4 or 5), some glass crystal, some very nicely polished bottlenecks, and if you have a bottle that fits your finger, and want something special, send it, they'll make you one out of that. Truly a custom company.
Then there's bim6.

These are very well done. True bottles, well polished, very inexpensive.
All in all, what you're using now, if it fits your finger, will be fine. Looks like a Mudslide? Those are nice slides. I have one, but got mine years ago before I discovered fit, it's about a half inch too long, and to me that's significant now.
Which finger do you intend to use? Little finger is best if you're starting out. Lots of great players use the ring, and a few even use the middle, but if you asked (and you didn't), I'd suggest the pinky. You have 3 other fingers to use, and it's simpler to damp behind the slide, which is necessary to cut down the noise and odd tones.
Other than that, have fun.

Damn. I knew it would be an offensive post. ![]()
Well, best of fun with your new guitar, Nationals are great.

Hey Neal I wasn't ignoring you, I just don't check in here as often as used to.
Thanks for all the info, I'm experimenting with some different slides. There's a thick wall glass Dunlop that I like, it fits my pinky, and the Moonshine pictured above fits well and sounds good, but it's very heavy and yes, a little too long.
I'm having a blast with this thing and I think I'm hooked. I've already got RAS for another resonator. So far, I've been playing in Open D (DADF#AD) and Open G (DGDGBD). "You Got The SIlver", "Dust My Broom", "Motherless Children", "My Black Mama", and of course, "Romeo and Juliet'.

Can't say as I blame you. I find picks sorta boring. Fake newbies too. Pretty much all there is here, other than vapid subjects, so when this topic came up, it was a breath of fresh air.
Oops, there I go again... offending the vapid subject starters and fake newbies..
Gonna post any tunes on it? Love to hear it.

I'm struggling a bit with this, the Intro to Mark Knopfler's "Romeo and Juliet". It's a very odd picking pattern, but I think I'm beginning to get a handle on it...
