CE-2 Vibro/Chorus Mod

I have been using this pedal with a '62 Reissue Strat and a PRS McCarty. I use a Soldano SLO head and a 2 Boogie Vertical 2X12 cab w/ EV12L's. I have heard all the hype about the David Gilmour sound and The Cure sound with this pedal and thought I would try it. It did not sound the way I thought UNTIL I used FX Mods. It is the perfect chorus now for me. I have 5 of these CE 2's and I only have 1 FX Mod modified version. That will change soon! Seriously, it made it 100% better and no, I am not advertising for them! They just make good pedals sound better. If it was a bad pedal to start, it would just be a bad pedal afterwards. FX Mods take a pedal that was gathering a lot of dust and give it new lease of life. I always thought the original was too subtle sounding. FX Mods basically give you something as good as ANY boutique analogue chorus out there, at a much more realistic price. It sounds clearer than stock, but still unmistakably analogue. You can get the "Pat Methany 1979" sound, no problem. You can also get "clone style" Leslie effects.
Reliability/Durability:
Does anybody really have any concerns? If you do, you don't know guitar pedals.
Ease of Use:
Quite elementary; a knob for rate of oscillation, a knob for depth of the oscillation.
Customer Support:
Never did, probably never will. It won't break down for another couple of decades at the very least.
Overall Rating:
The best chorus I've heard after the mod and now there is no point in buying any others. Another great chorus sound can be found on an original Digitech Whammy, but it's not great with chords and after hearing the FX Mods CE-2, it's all that I want from a chorus pedal.

CE-2 Vibro/Chorus Mod

The 2nd unit looks like the 1st. There is no changes to the outside I could see except I sent him a better looking CE 2 pedal. I use it with a '62 Strat reissue and a Tele Plus w/lace sensor p/u's and sometimes a Les Paul thru a Soldano SLO w/Boogie EV12L loaded 2x12 cab. My latest purchase was a used JCM 800 2210 Marshall head and this pedal sounds even better thru it as most things do. I also use a 2ch The Twin and this CE 2 chorus sounds sweet and clean thru it. As mentioned before I try hard to get a David Gilmour/ Warren Haynes sound. Since the two sounds are different in every way I use 2 separate setups. The chorus side of the mod is the normal Boss CE 2 low sweet chorus as usual but the modded Vintage Vibro side is a nice to wild vibro depending on how far you go on the speed knob. The sound quality has jumped up quit a bit from the first unit. Tim is on to something here, trust me!
Reliability/Durability:
It is basically a Boss pedal with mods throughout. If there is a problem I am sure Tim would fix it no questions asked. I do gig with another unit, remember this is the 2nd unit I have bought from the Doc. GOOD LUCK DOC!
Ease of Use:
This is the 2nd unit I have bought from Tim. The first one was late last year I believe. Since I have 2 different setups I always try to pickup 2 pedals of each model so not to have to rearrange the setups everytime I want to add or change something. The reason I am reviewing the 2nd unit is Tim changed the mod a bit. He told me he used a few upgraded parts due to the fact he found some vintage parts that were not available in the 1st unit. It sounds great. It is cleaner than the 1st and the speed of the Vibro is faster and a bit chunkier. I think it's that it has a bit more bottom end than the 1st unit. Remember it's a Boss CE 2, 2 knobs and a toggle, very simple unit to operate. Boss compact pedals in my opinion are the best money can buy. Some can be modified to make better but a bad sounding pedals will only sound bad if it's modified so to modify a good sounding pedal makes sense and Tim knows what he is doing. (checkout his website www.pedaldoctor.com) You will be glad you did. He has several pedals to mod and he builds several of his own designs and is working on a few new pedals as we speak!
Customer Support:
Tim Creek is a great guy. No doubt he makes quality products. I wish he would get his business to boom out of the US but to do that he would have to hire more help. I think it's Tim and Tim alone doing the mods. If I am wrong I apologize but I think it's him alone. doc@pedaldoctor.com for info on his pedals and mods and no I am not an employee or am I being paid to say these things, I just use his products and love them.
Overall Rating:
I play classic rock and blues. I have played everything from INXS to Led Zep and all in between.I write and record my own music now. I have been playing all my life since I was 12 yrs old and I am 47 now so Rock is my life and I have played for a living but I retired from gigging a few years back. Now it's recording only! This pedal and other CE 2's are the only analog chorus pedals I use. I do use a few digital chorus pedals but they are mainly for Distortion add ons like the Boss MZ 2 tone. But the CE 2 vibro/chorus is one fine unit.

CE-2 Vibro/Chorus Mod

I use a Fender Tele Plus (single coil in neck, hb at bridge) and a '62 reissue Strat through a Fender 'The Twin' or a Soldano SLO w/a 2x12 EV12L loaded cab. I was looking for a David Gilmour Pink Floyd type sound and wanted a different chorusing speed controlled pedal to go along with the RK CE 2 speedy mod. This Tim Creek Vibro mod works great with the RK's speedy mod CE 2. One of my favorite chorus mods along with the RKFX modded CE 2.
Reliability/Durability:
So far I have bought and or sold 75 Boss CE 2 chorus pedals either MIJ black label or green but for these modifications the Taiwan CE 2 is the best one to use since after the modifications the insides are completely changed. As for carrying a backup I use 4 CE 2's in my live gig so yes I do have two of each.
Ease of Use:
I read about The Docs CE2 a few months back and thought I'd try it since I have many Robert Keeley CE 2 modded chorus pedals. Tim did a great job dividing the two sounds with a switchcraft toggle. The chorus sounds like the factory Boss chorus but switch the toggle to Vibro and the difference is very noticable. The only edit is increasing or decreasing the speed control.
Customer Support:
Tim supports his products. Now Boss is another story. I haven't ever sent back a pedal to Roland so I can't comment on their customer service. If you email Tim (the Doc) at PedalDoctors FX he will answer your email as quickly as possible. Very friendly and knows what he is talking about.
Overall Rating:
I play Classic Rock and blues and have been playing for over 30years. I own several guitars Gibson LP's to Fender Strat' and Tele's. For recording I use a Vox Valvetronics amp and a Line 6 Flextone II and the Twin and SLO noted above. I have used many Boss modified overdrives and effects pedals. I compaired Tim's mod to the H/K rotosphere and several other vibro type pedals and his was quieter and generally easier to use. Together with another modified CE 2 I can combine the two speeds with the Twins Tremolo and have a great spinning type tone. I am well pleased with the PedalDoctors CE 2Vibro/Chorus Mod. So much so I just ordered another one. If you have a CE 2 Taiwan version send it to him and you'll see the difference it makes.
