EZ-Play Martin Sigma DM-1

Review By:
igmoo on 1/19/09 1:00 AM
Reviewer Background:
Purchased From:
ebay auction
Price:
$400.00 USD
Features:
Good, albeit light finish, dreanought, enclosed tuners, laminate top, sides, back, but a decent sound, good looking guitar. Light in weight but surprisingly nice. Made in Korea. Came with case and humidifier, certificate of authenticity, picture of Zager, pkg. of extra light D'Arci strings.
Action, Fit, & Finish:
Bought this on the Internet - from dealer who bought out Zager "vault". Dealer had many Zagers up for auction which I watched  wisk away. Suddenly a Zager Sigma DM-1 was all that was left. I pounched. I did see the "No returns" policy. Had I bought with Zager way back when, Zager probably would have taken it back. The frets were "up" on the high E string in the 8th, 9th, 10 frets making rough playing. To top it off, I had two "dead" notes on the high E string 8th and 9th fret.  I emailed DZjr asking for advice. No reply. I brought guitar to local 87 year old luthier who laughed at me for buying an "EZ"play. "Any guitar can be made an easy player." He fixed it "Did the best I can". The frets are down, no dead notes but still a bit of buzz when strumming normally. I can live with that. 87 year old luthier said, "Who did you say did the set up? The frets were all filed down sloppily. Bring in your Gibson, I'll make it an easy player." Next time no buying at auction unless "RETURN" policy. When auction dealer described guitar as "10" in sound, I thought he meant it!
Sound Quality:
Bright sound for fingerpicking, my style. Buzzing on the bass notes when strumming moderately. This does play easily. Not a killer on the fingers. You can see the carved bridge work done by Zager, and the filed frets. My disappointment has been the dead notes which I need for fingerpicking. You figure when you buy a guitar, whatever the cost, all the notes would be there!
Reliability/Durability:
Hardware, finish, strap button all look good and sturdy.  Seems a bit fragile compared to my Gibson solid wood. Time will tell. Came with a Zager case which is sturdy.
Ease of Use:
Customer Support:
Auction dealer said "No returns". I contacted Zagers website for advice - no response. I actually contacted them way before the purchase with a compliment about such positive feedback. Got a Thank you then, seemed like such decent folk.  My repair at local luthier cost $70.
Overall Rating:
I played seriously as a 15-30 year old. Just started playing again as a 50 year old. Wanted something that would be kind to older hands.  I have a Gibson J45 which has great sound, warmth and tone but high action. Before I bought this I went to local dealers and tried out Taylor 210, 414c, Martin DM18. I quickly eliminated the Seagulls and focused on the Taylors and Martins. Browsed online for independent names - never tried a Breedlove or a Zager. Both were contenders. I will never buy online again unless there is a "Return Policy". Probably could have bought this guitar for $250 elsewhere. I made a bad deal.

It had everything I was looking for.  Quality construction, solid top, quality materials.  I don't need the bells and whistles.
Action, Fit, & Finish:
Gorgeous and looks like it was made with pride.
Sound Quality:
The sounds is extraordinary.  I am a singer/voice teacher and this guitar drew me in with it's nice balance of bright and rich, mellow. It is wonderful instrument for accompanying singers.  Just the balance I strive for, and look for as a teacher.
Reliability/Durability:
Can't beat the warranty and though I haven't had it long enough to be much use here, it seems tough in all the right places.
Ease of Use:
Customer Support:
I hounded Dennis Zager Jr. several times, and he was so nice and prompt in responding.  He was helpful in my decision making and just the kind of business that makes you smile and feel good about promoting. Thanks Dennis!!

The guitar is exactly as stated in the ads.  The guitar arrived in perfect condition and was adjusted wonderfully as shipped.  This guitar has the easiest frets of any I've played.  I can't believe how easy it is to play.
Sound Quality:
This guitar has absolutely wonderful sound.  I have owned Ovation as well as a few "cheap" guitars, but this sounds the best.  This guitar has perfect resonance.
Reliability/Durability:
I like this guitar so much, it will probably be played only in small group gatherings, but it extremely well constructed and would probably handle anything.  The finish is so pretty I can't bear to let it get scratched.  This is a really well made guitar.

My Zager Martin DM-1 has a solid top. Mahogany back and sides. Dreadnought body. Very thin frets with a Rosewood neck. Came with an extra set of Martin strings and a humidity sensor.
Action, Fit, & Finish:
Guitar was set up by Dennis Zager. He definitely knows what he's doing. Action is very low. Does not have any buzzing whatsoever. Dennis hand picks the guitars he modifies, and wont modify one if it doesnt meet his standards.
Sound Quality:
This is one of the best sounding guitars I've ever played. It sounds as good as my friends high end Martin. Has a very rich sound. Sounds extremely good when fingerpicking. I love everything about this guitar. Can't say I have any complaints.
Reliability/Durability:
This guitar seems to be built to last. The finish on it is spotless. I believe this guitar would hold up to any style of playing.
Ease of Use:
Customer Support:
Zager Guitars is probably the nicest people you could deal with. How msny other companies let you speak directly with the boss. Call Fender or Ibanez up and ask to speak with the boss. Get the point. You can call Zager Guitars and speak with Dennis Zager himself. All of his guitars have a lifetime warranty. Dont think anyone else offers that.
Overall Rating:
Been playing for nearly a year. I also own a Jackson flying V. and and Esp. If my Zager were stolen, after I got over my mad spell I would buy another. I love everything about this guitar. The way it looks and sounds and the durability.

After playing my Goya classical guitar for thirty years, I began to realize that my fingers were getting sore.  I also began to notice rattling, and buzzing because the strings were much higher off the fretboard than when it was new.  I searched, and found Zager Guitars, I purchased a new DM1 acoustic, and was very pleased to recieve it in only three days.  Much to my surprize, I did not have to string it... or tune it.  I took it from the box, and played it all that evening. My fingers did not hurt, nor did my ears.  It was everything that the advertisement claimed, "easy to play"  "quality sound".  I would like to heartily recommend this guitar to anybody who likes to play without painful fingers.  Joe Dorsey
Action, Fit, & Finish:
My DM1 came out of the box like a prize fighter going for a first round knockout.  Not only was it strung, but it was in perfect tune. I played it for several hours before I even noticed how great it looked.  The wood is gorgeous, and the fittings work perfectly. Just try one on for size, and you will know what I am proclaiming.
Sound Quality:
My music style is Simon and Garfunkel, Crosby Stills and Nash, and all the similar performers who don't have to deafen you with noise. I use NO amps, because I play for myself, friends and family.  The DM1 has very rich and full sound even when being played by me....I stil consider myself a guitar beginner.  I am very please with it, and only wish I had found it sooner.
Reliability/Durability:
As far as reliability goes, lets face it.  I have only owned it for about a month.  I will say that it is put together very well, and it leaves me no doubt that it will last, and look as good or better than other guitars that I have had.  When you speak about reliability, how does your company respond to you when you buy a guitar?  Do they just put the money in the register and another guitar on the shelf.  Have they ever contacted you and asked if there were any problems, or if you are happy with it?  Denny Zager has done that for me....and I am pretty sure that if a problem should arise, he will accomodate. I don't do gigs anymore, I play mostly in private, but I like what I hear from this guitar.
Ease of Use:
Customer Support:
Still new, and still gorgeously appointed.  I can only attest to the courteous and congenial treatment that I recieve in ordering and in recieving it.  They follow up with their customers.
Overall Rating:
I have been playing since the mid sixties.  I have owned a fender electric (which must to my dismay I traded in back in the seventies) on a Goya classical.  If it were lost...or stolen, I would cry for a few days, then call Denny Zager for a replacement.  I only wish I had ordered the case when I bought the guitar.  It is somewhat deeper and therefore mellower in sound than my previous guitar, and as a result, I cannot fit it in the rather new case I had recently bought for the last one.
