Someone gave me this pedal when I first started playing years ago, and back then, I had no idea what it was supposed to do.  I thought it had to be meant for more than just a high EQ boost.  I generally like darker or mellower tones, so a boost in highs wasn't what I wanted, but I actually used this pedal constantly for years.  I used it as a click-boost for solos.  I put the presence all the way down and the level all the way up, and this boosted my volume and also gave me a little more cut - great for solos.  I had this last in the chain of pedals - wah, dist, chorus, and the FX85.  I used this with a Les Paul and a Stratocaster.  I don't use this pedal anymore, since I now use the gain channel on my amp for solo boosts. But if you're using a single-channel tube amp, this will give you a decent-sounding boost for you solos.
Reliability/Durability:
When I got this, it looked like it had been run over by a few cars.  No problems then or now.  Very reliable.  I should mention that I don't know if the adaptor works; I have never owned an adaptor compatable with DOD pedals.
Ease of Use:
There are only two knobs.  Not a whole lot of thinking required.
Customer Support:
Never dealt with them, never had to.
Overall Rating:
I used this in a hard rock/grunge band a long time ago.  It was perfect for that.  I don't use it anymore, but it would still work just fine for what I play now (alternative, prog, classic rock).  I'll bet this would even be nice for some jazz or jazz fusion.  I only used it as an easy boost for solos.  I never had it on for chording.  For what I used it for, it got the job done.

I used this in the mid/high part of my ridiulously complicated bi-amped bass rig in the 80's. It added high end completely unlike an EQ. It does raise hiss a little (despite the process going through a 570 compandor) but it may just be amplifying the inherent hiss in my rig. With the banks of tweeters I used, his was inevitable. However, I also used a DNR (Dynamic Noise Reduction) circuit which got rid of all the hiss. My rig consisted of a modded tube Bassman preamp going into a crossover and EQ. 500Hz and above went through an Ibanez flanger, the Harmonic Enhancer, and the DNR into the Bassman's 50 watt tube power amp, which drove two 4X8 cabinets and two banks of tweeters. The low end went into folded horn 15" cabinets. I had the best bass tone in the valley! But who really cares what the bass sounds like other than the player. This pedal added a "professional" quality to every thing I tried it with. It is a GREAT acoustic guitar preamp, especially if you use an in-the-soundhole magnetic type pickup. With piezos it might be too bright, but it worked great with a no-preamp Ovation 12 string with a piezo bridge. We also use it with mandolin and it's GREAT with digital pianos. It adds high end and presence to any instrument in the mix, and can make an instrument stand out live or when recording. I loaned one to a keyboard player who played that old 80's Yahama piano (with strings and piezo pickups) and he loved it so much, he bought one and mounted the board in the piano. One gig, our guitar player was frustrated because his guitar sounded muddy in the room we were in. His strings were a bit old and tired also. I plugged in a spare FX85, and the first song he commented, "This thing rocks!" Indeed it does, if you understand what it does and how it does it.
Reliability/Durability:
I've repaired switches in others' DOD pedals, but none of the dozens we own have ever failed. Support from DOD has been excellent, and they've provided me with schematics just for the asking. Unless stolen, I can't imagine having to have a backup. But I love these things, so I have a couple extra...just in case someone needs to lifted in the mix.
Ease of Use:
This effect has two controls, presence, and level. How easy could it be. The presence sets the level of the enhancement and the level controls the overall level of the pedal. I have had 3 of these things, but didn't get a manual. But I'm familiar with enhancers, owning BBE's, a Rocktron RX10 Exciter/Imager, an Aphex Aural Exciter, Boss enhancer pedal, DOD Edge (reviewed in that section) and an Alesis exciter.
Customer Support:
Excellent. I have a good collection of schematics that DOD provided me. We have dozens of DOD pedals, and the support has been great. Try getting the schematics for Boss pedals. This ain't Boss. The folks at DOD, especially Dean Athens, have been available and most helpful. Maybe a move to Utah is in the future.
Overall Rating:
I'd give DOD's pedals a 10, if it weren't for the occasional switch failure or lost battery cover (where do these things disappear to?) I have enough DOD pedals that if one disappeared, I'd have something similar to take it's place. That being said...I don't lose equipment to theft or misplacement. Thanks to GPS technology, it's possible to recover a stolen item in mere minutes (maybe an hour or two.) If you value the use of your fingers, don't steal from me. Steal from me, and your playing days will come to a close. DOD nearly has an effect for every occasion. I can only think of a couple Boss pedals that don't have a similar pedal in the DOD line (or vice versa). I love the professional "sheen" this pedal puts on the tone of an instrument.

I have an early 60s Vox AC10 that has a fantastic vintage tone, but I could never get enough treble from it, even with Telecasters. The amp was rebuilt as a miniature AC30 with two 8" Weber alnico speakers. This gave more treble but still not enough. A guitar-tech friend suggested that it needed something to boost the input signal and so I pilfered this DOD FX85 pedal from my brother and have been most impressed with the result. The single-coil Fender guitars sound really snarly and rawk! Especially the '62 Jazzmaster. The pedal is a bit noisy, and so it is best suited as a boosting device for solos, as it was probably intended. I compared it to the highly regarded Aramat TrebleMaster and found that it cut too much of the bass spectrum for my liking. The DOD lets through all of the tones and hence was better suited for my purposes.
Reliability/Durability:
DOD pedals are very rugged. I generally don't use pedals at gigs and the AC10 is mainly for home and studio playing. Hence I cannot really say anything about its reliability.
Ease of Use:
Two knobs and thus very easy to use: "Level" is for adjusting the volume and "Presence" is for setting the tone.
Customer Support:
Cannot comment. I live in the Antipodes and hence we don't get to deal directly with US manufacturers.
Overall Rating:
I have been playing for 20 years - mostly roots type music - Blues, soul, reggae, folk, country and rock'n'roll and I like the sparkling tone of this pedal for the brasher bits. I have not used it with my other, bigger amps (60's blackface Fender Super Reverb and point-to-point wired reissue tweed Bassman) as they have plenty of sparkle already, but it works well with the duller Vox AC10, as it would with a non-top-boost model AC30. To my mind, a Stratocaster or Telecaster has to shimmer, which is why I prefer the 4x10" speaker combos, and with the DOD FX85 the little AC10 comes alive and wants to kick out the jams with the Stones, the Faces, the Black Crowes etc. If I turn the AC10 up all the way, then it sounds magnificent, but there's too much distortion and it's too loud for home playing. When I add the DOD, I can get a better sound at a lower volume with less distortion, which is good for chunky rhythm parts and riffs. Overall I have been most impressed with this pedal - especially since I did not even have to pay for it!

I wanted to update the review I gave awhile back.  Since I've started playing more with a band (as opposed to practicing by myself), I've found the need for some type of lead-boost.  After pondering several options, I realized that the Harmonic Enhancer would be great...AND IT WAS!  If you need to switch back and forth between rhythm and lead, this pedal--placed AFTER the distortion--will make the difference.  They should start making these again.

Again, I found it works great when used as a lead-boost after distortion.  I'd update my rating to 10.

I play an old Hamer with Humbuckers Peavy Dirty Dog DD-3 PH-3 Digitech PDS-1700 FX85 Harmonic Enhancer Crate GX1200h This thing has great sound quality.  It boost the harmonic values but not to the point of squealing feedback.  The only complaint I have is that when the presence knob is turned bast 1-2 o'clock, it tends to make some unwanted noise, but not really that much.  The main reason I love this this is because how it treats my distortion.  I wouldn't play any distortion without it.  It can make any distortion sound 10 times better.  I leave this thing on all the time, dirty and clean, and it has never let me down.  This thing is the secret of my tone.
Reliability/Durability:
It's DOD so it's not invincible, but it is dependable enough for even my band's stage (we're a little rough).  I have never had a problem with it.
Ease of Use:
This thing has two knobs.  You really can't get bad sound out of it unless you get feedback, in which case just turn the presence knob down a little.  If you can't figure this one out, you need a new hobby.
Customer Support:
Don't know, but I've heard that they are pretty good.
Overall Rating:
I play hard rock, funk, punk and metal; all on the heavier side of each genre.  When I gave this the rating I did, I did so over alot of thought.  This thing is a great pedal for those who wish added tone to their distortion.  Perfect for those who use pedals like the HM-2, MT-2, Dirty Dog, or any other that doesn't necessarily have alot of inherent tone.  If it does have good tone, then this thing is frosting on the cake.  If you find one, BUY IT, YOU'LL LOVE IT.
