Boss PD-1 Rocker Distortion

pro harp player soundscaper
Purchased From:

Price:
CAD80.00 CAD USED
Features:

jesus that was hard work registering and navigating this site ... holy crap ... anyway this pedal is a very subtle beast with a series of three pots to set effect level , minimum level and tone , and then the rocker with a switch at either end to activate/deactivate the unit and a warp-factor-9 at the top for extra emphasis ... more features than youd expect on a distortion and all of them easy to comprehend set up change and generally make good music with

warp factor could have been latching ... i like holding it down in this stage but if youre sat down as i often am because of my rig it can be a challenge keeping it engaged

Sound Quality:

awesome for cranked up valve tube soundwaves huge post apocalypse book of eli soundtracks, swoops swells and dives ... enough expression in the rocker to really make the sound your own ... unlike most distortions you wont just switch it on and off you ll wage war with it ... ive used it for harp and for guitar ... add a little delay after it for total beauty

Reliability/Durability:

the bruce willis of guitar pedals ... old school and kickass

Ease of Use:

im normally all about the device and i bonded with this right away ... a good pedal does one thing and it does it intuitively ... never struggled to set this ... every times ive plugged it in ive been jacknifed by how awesome it sounds

Customer Support:

never gonna need it

Overall Rating:

i cant sing the praises of this pedal quite enough ... i went through the emotional turmoil of registering on this damn site which ive rad for years ... just to post about this pedal ... i was lucky in that id been actively searching for a distortion on a treadle pedal for years, came across this and bought it right away and its better than i could have hoped for

PD-1 Rocker Distortion

This has to be one of the most underrated pedals ever. Overdrive and distortion without getting mushy when playing complex chords. It goes from clean to nice overdrive to very high quality distortion. Better than most dirt boxes I've used, and I've tried plenty of them. I have a very early BOSS OD-1 with the quad op-amp chip, and the PD-1 is much more flexible and the sound quality is so much better.
Reliability/Durability:
It is over 25 years old and works just fine.
Ease of Use:
This thing is very easy to tweak, and has 2 internal trim pots to tweak even more. The warp mode is activated by pressing very hard, by standing on the pedal.

Overall Rating:
Excellent pedal. Very big for a pedal, but the sound and functionality make it worth the real estate. Try one and you will wonder why these are not more popular.

I couldn't be happier with this pedal. It sounds great, and I don't have any issues with noise, once I tweeked the pots inside to just barely below 10. Backing off too much can cause noise issues instead of eliminating them, strangely enough. There is a wide range of settings, internal and external to explore with this pedal, so take the bottom cover off if you own one and aren't happy with it.
Reliability/Durability:
Built like a tank and ready to rumble...
Ease of Use:
Step on it, and press it forward into warp for solos. Could it be any simpler?

Overall Rating:
This pedal sounds much better than the DS-1, or DS-2... comparable to boutique pedals costing $150, or more... it has the famous JRC4558 chip, along with another chip; the TC4011 used in the sought-after flangers, phasers and chorus pedals from the 1970's and 80's. If it were stolen, i would put out an APB with local musicians and find the asshole who bought it. I've been playing for about nine years. I play this using a Japanese-made, 1980's, mahogany body Les Paul/Strat hybrid made by Arbor with double humbuckers, two volume and one tone control. I play a type of music that can be described as "no wave"; think of Lydia Lunch's first band, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks and you are in the ballpark of my sound... Forget what the first loser said about this pedal. He must have bought a lemon. Every other user gives this a 10, and that is what it deserves.

i am using this with a double humbucker no-name setneck, les paul knockoff. i am running into a club 30 amp. i prefer to run it full out with the warp switch engaged. it's my favorite boss pedal.
Reliability/Durability:
it's a solid little chunk of aluminum alloy that has held up for 25 years and is still going strong. i never gig without a backup. but, this never lets me down.
Ease of Use:
hey, just step on it and push it down until you find your sound. very easy. just be careful when you back off of it, or you could easily turn off the pedal.
Customer Support:
i never have needed to call roland for any of my equipment made by them. just luck, i suppose.
Overall Rating:
better than a ds-1. sort of a mix between a ds-1 and ds-2 with a phase shifter thrown in. they're fairly hard to find in 2005, but grab one if you can!!! if it were stolen, i would hunt down the @ssh*le and get it back.

My setup : Mexican Telecaster-Aria RE-90 Super Phaser-ZOOM 505II(only for ring mod)-Nobels ODR-S Overdrive Special-Boss PD-1-Dunlop J Hendrix wah-EH Big Muff-MXR Blue Box-Aria ACH-1 Stereo Chorus-Pignose G40V tube amp. It's really "tubey", a rare fact in the world of distortions! Doesn't have the highest gain ever, but I'm not the kind of people who likes such a heavy distortion. I noticed also that sometimes it plays better with transistor amps.
Reliability/Durability:
Ease of Use:
3 knobs + warp switch which allows you to control directly the drive (great option!)

Overall Rating:
Great non-metal-high-gain distortion. Sounds like a vintage tube amp!
