judging by the reviews it seems like there might be some bad apples out there, or even fautly patch cables.. who knows. MINE on the other hand, is flawless in sound... 80's generic?? whatever man, if yer into making some seriously weirded out stuff(ie ring mods for noise/no wave, sweeping synths, reverse warp , shoegaze, psychedelic) this is a great pedal to have.. i use an array of effects ranging from all kinds of fuzzes, to all types of delay and a Whammy for good measure. thinline tele, 65 reissue twin, and like i said all kinds of other effects... this one is my fave!!
Reliability/Durability:
you cant always speak on behalf of all of them, but 10
Ease of Use:
as easy as a multi-proc is... once you get the hang of it, its super easy. the instructions are on the back, kinda weird.
Customer Support:
no clue
Overall Rating:
buy one... seriously.. it'll hold its value

I'm using a PRS McCarty running right into the Xp-300, then into a Boss TU-2 into a Line6 FM4 than to a Line6 MM4 strait to a Flextone III XL. The sound quality is decent. Like other have said, it's a goofy pedal that warrants respect for that "spacey-sci-fi" quality other effects don't acheive. I have noticed that when bypassed it SUCKS THE TONE RIGHT FROM MY GUITAR! That's the only bad thing about this pedal. I tended to pull the pedal from my signal chain constantly when trying it out. BUt the effects are really neat, so I'd have to give this rating a 5 for being inbetween.
Reliability/Durability:
I need to get a True-Bypass switch for this unit, like an external FX loop, that way I can remove it totally from the signal chain when not in use. Otherwise, I think I  can rely on it. Trying it out at the store at the first use it had issues powering on, but eh, I bought it anyhows. I've wanted one for years now.
Ease of Use:
Kind of a musical toy. THeres no effect that can becmome a staple in my music, but it's great for intro's and outro's, and the occasional creepy synth swell. I just got it, and I've only toyed around with it at one practice with my band. Pretty simple to use, no editable settings other than the pedal and the scrolls.

Neat pedal, just NEEDS an external true-bypass to prevent tone squashing.

The Space Station sounds bad.  The resonator setting is kind of cool and the strings settings are hilarious but it basically just sucks.  It sounds cheap and weak.  The ring modulator is pathetic.
Reliability/Durability:
Well, I had it for a couple years and never took it to shows because it sounded and performed so poorly I never wanted to use it live.  However, it worked the whole time I had it so I suppose it must work consistently.
Ease of Use:
This pedal is useless.  It sucks.  All the sounds are lame and it can't be programmed or edited.  The manual is no good.  I suppose the two button switching is easy to use, but it sucks.  A knob would've been better.  Switching from patch three to patch twenty-four (for instance) is a huge pain in the ass.  Digitech hooked it up with six user patches, but since they're exactly the same as the presets all you REALLY get to change a few patch numbers.
Customer Support:
I never called Digitech.
Overall Rating:
I sing the new, post-riot grrl apocalypso songs.  I use a Rickenbacker 360.  I play loud.

XP-300 Space Station

this is the first 'multi-effects' processor i've used - i have a couple of electro-harmonix pedals + microsynth, a roland space echo, that sort of thing. i guess the biggest problem i have with the space station is that it sounds really obnoxiously digital. if that bothers you as well, you'll definately want to use it with gear that will lessen this quality. i'm sure it would sound better through a tube amp, etc. that's not really the point of the space station though, and i feel like a lot of the other reviews on this site never quite got what this thing is about. essentially, it's the ultimate sci-fi effects pedal.  a real kitsch machine, make no mistake. cartoony as hell. there are effects in here that sound exaclty like the 'special effects' on childrens' toy keyboards, and all those toy cars/airplanes/whatever with sirens etc. that they sell in chinatown. if you've ever wanted to write music for ice cream trucks or 8-bit nintendos (two of the settings on here sound exactly like an old atari), or music using those kinds of sounds, you will love this. and those are just the settings that people on this site have described as "useless" if the dime-store aesthetic doesn't suit you... the 'strings' sound like disney soundtracks, as someone said. incredible. it's a bit like an even tackier, dimestore version of the strings on recent flaming lips or mercury rev albums. the strings are possibly the best thing on here. but... all they are, as far as i can tell, is harmonizer + echo + volume pedal for swells. if you alredy have a harmonizer and a delay pedal don'y buy this exclusively for the synth strings. that said, i usually hate harmonizers and i love the way they work in this context - it never would have occured to me to use one that way.   the ring modulator sounds a lot like dod's gonkulator, if you've heard those. better with lots of distrotion. the reverse effects are fun too. i wasn't able to get that whole my bloody valentine reverse reverb thing going but other's have said it's possible (and there's definately plenty here for shoegazers). but if you're drawn to the space station, chances are you aren't really trying to sound like somone else anyway. i wish there was more control over delay time... the ranges are pretty narrow. it never seems to be able to go as fast or slow as i want it to... if you have another echo pedal, that's probably a good thing. so, the digital sound annoys me, and the range of delay times could be bigger, but really, those are pretty minor gripes... i gave a 10 for sound because of the features, not sound quality. there's probably no one alive who would find all of these things useful but come on - there's like 38 effects. i don't think the sounds here are as 'unique' as people claim on their own... like i said, some of them you get with an atari or a toy airplane or whatever... but you can't get them ON A GUITAR with anything else. some of it can be done with a line 6 delay etc etc etc...
Reliability/Durability:
this is fragile... if you jump around a lot and stomp on your pedals really hard, be careful with this one. and they dont make them anymore, so if it breaks, too bad. it's pretty important to me that the gear i use is indestructable. oh well.
Ease of Use:
well... all the effects are listed on the bottom of the box, so you can't look at the list and flip through different settings at the same time. that's a pretty significant problem, as there are 40 settings, and you can only 'store' 6 of them. they really should have put that list in the manual somewhere. aside from that, it's pretty simple.
Customer Support:
don't bother asking companies to fix their 'obsolete' products.
Overall Rating:
this pedal, if that's what it is, either fits your personality (musically and otherwise) or not. i you're really into joe meek and b movies and stuff like that, you'll probably enjoy this... others have said this is for experimental/noise people, and while that is definately true (tho experimental doesn't necessarily mean avant-garde - i play 3 minute indie pop songs), it's probably way too cartoony/sci-fi for most. they definately picked the right name for it, anyway. if you do the experimental thing, but your style is really pensive and serious this might not work for you. for me, the space station was a really perfect match. i only worry that i use it too much...

XP-300 Space Station

Review By:

I use the Space Station mostly with my trusty PRS Santana SE, a Boss GT-3 and a couple of delay/loopers.  I usually put the GT-3 first, and the Space Station near the end of the signal chain, after the loopers. Some of the Space Station's presets are pretty noisy, like the Ring Mod and Pixellator presets, but I expected them to be noisy.  Some of the other presets, like the Resonators and the Arpeggiators, can be grating when you max out the expression pedal.  Octabass (#9) seems pretty useless; the lower octave doesn't really come through. Volume Pedal (#40) works without a scratch or a hiss. I always keep #40 Volume as my first user patch, just for safety's sake.  Next is #12 Stop/Reverse, #6 String Swell-4ths, #24 Ring Mod, #28 Sample/Hold and #30 A-Resonator-I-V.  Even when Is switch my User Presets around, I usually keep one Reverse preset, and one Ring Mod preset. Of all the experimental guitarists I listen to and admire, I know that Vernon Reid uses a Space Station, but I don't know which settings he uses, and I'm really trying to get my own sound, no disrespect intended. One problem with the Space Station is that it seems to boost my signal a lot, even when I turn down the Input knob.  I usually have to put another Volume Pedal following the Space Station to tame the levels from the Space Station's outputs.  I give it a 7 for sound quality just because of the output level.
Reliability/Durability:
The Space Station is one of my favorite sick toys, so yes, I depend on it.  I have taken it out on gigs, without a backup, but I would consider getting a spare, just in case.  Digitech no longer makes the XP-series, but they still turn up in catalogs and music stores, sometimes.  I give a 9 for reliability, only because I don't have a spare, and I'd lose a o lot of unique sounds if it died.
Ease of Use:
Getting a good sound out of the Space Station depends on your idea of a good sound; this is a strange sounding pedal.  If you're looking for a nice multi-effects pedal, with the usual Cho/Delay/Reverb menu, back away slowly.  The Space Station is WEIRD.  Otherwise, it's pretty easy to use. You just turn it on, scroll through the presets until you hear something you like, then play with the exression pedal.  A lot of the presets use the expression pedal to control Input Level, so you won't hear anything on those presets until you push the pedal down.  There's no editing, and not much of a manual.  Most of the vital info about the presets themselves is on the bottom of the pedal.  Who thought of that?  You can store your favorite effects in 6 User slots, for quicker access.  I give it a 7 for Ease of Use because you'll really have to fool with each preset to figure out what it does.  Some people still won't be sure what it does, even after half an hour.
Customer Support:
I've never had a problem with the Space Station, but they were very responsive when I had a problem with another product, under a warranty repair.  Not only did they respond quickly to my e-mails, when my repair was being shipped back to me, a real live human being called me from their repair shop in Utah, to tell me what they'd done, and when they'd shipped it.
Overall Rating:
I play weird music and the Space Station is good and weird.  A lot of the sounds are unique, others would be hard to imitate.  Having to watch for the output level is a minor pain, compared to the range of new sounds the box offers. I've been playing a long damned time, since before BBD's.  I have a bunch of sick pedals, and a preference for mahogany planks with humbuckers.  If my Space Station went FUBAR, I'd look for another one; there isn't anything else quite like it, and nothing to really compare it to. I love the Tape Reverse and Ring Modulator effects.  I don't really hate any of the presets, even though I'm not impressed with #9 Octabass.  I wish it had stereo inputs, and an Output control; that's all I'd ask in the way of hardware.  Other than that, copy the info off the bottom of the pedal and put it in the manual, too, that would help out a lot of users.  I copied it all into a notebook, so I wouldn't have to flip the pedal over when I wanted to fool with a preset I hadn't used in a while. The Space Station gives me an interesting set of effects to add tomy music, with only one or two compromises.  I use it often, and I've even written pieces of music around sounds produced by the Space Station; that's pretty major. One of my favorite tricks with the Space Station requires a looper, like the Line 6 Delay Modeler, or a long delay with a hold function, like the Boss DD-6.  Put the delay/looper before the Space Station, so the Space Station tweaks your loops.  Set the Space Station to #10 Forward/Stop/Reverse.  Get a loop going, then slowly, push down on the Space Station's expresion pedal.  You'll hear your loop slowly grind to a halt, then speed up in reverse.  It's a lot of fun in a live setting, when people get that "How the hell does it do that?" look. As much as I like the Space Station, this is a pedal you should really try before you buy it.  I think most people will either love or hate the space Station.  Control freaks who want MIDI and deep programming won't find it.  Would-be pop stars who want a canned modern sound will probably hate the Space Station.  This is a pedal for noise freaks, and fans of experimental/psychedlic/shoegazer guitar sounds.  Add distortion and delay, and prepare to take off for deep space.
