Although not as "warm and analoguey" as the WH-1, it has its good points.  For anyone saying they cant get the sounds of "who-ever they're trying to copy"...you have to be crazy.  I've owned the WH-1 before anyone even heard of Tom Morello, and before it gained its immense over-use and popularity.  Then I subsequently bought this when it came out, mainly for the switching capability. If you're looking for Steve Vai type harmonies...forget it.  No version of this pedal will get that.  He uses Eventide processors that cost upwards of 5 grand or more... The Whammy's all have glitchy artifacts and wackiness, part of their inherent beauty. Simply, this pedal is what it is.  Yes, I dont think this ivl Technologies pedal is as great as the original, but I use it when I dont feel like taking out a irreplaceable vintage pedal, and I have no complaints or problems.  Just for reference: My gear consists of '61 original SG les paul '72 Tele, Heritage Les Paul, Custom Schecter Guitars, TObias custom guitar...many others. Amps: Everything from Rivera, 60's Princeton, Vintage Acoustic amps, Mesa Boogie, Marshall, Fender Blues Jr, Peavey Classic 30 modded, Carvin, etc... Pedals: Too many to mention, vintage to new. I'm a pro session and touring musician and have been around for a bit.  I know my gear...
Reliability/Durability:
I've had all my Whammy's from WH-1 to Wh-4 since the day they debuted.  No problems. Just a simple cleaning now and then to keep them nice... ;)
Ease of Use:
I give this a 8.  Its easy if you have the WH-1 or the re-issue WH-4.  I own all 5 models (even the horrible xp-100 Whammy Wah & the bass Whammy).  They also stripped down the amount of harmony presets to the most normally used and took out one detune setting.  But they did add a preset selection toggle footswitch that also allows you to set between 2 of your favorites on the fly. I give it an 8, due to the input level on the back that takes a bit of patience to deal with.
Customer Support:
Never had to deal with them.
Overall Rating:
I play everything from Radiohead madness to jamband nuttiness, R&B soul, to Hip hop...although not usable in every situation, this is a very versatile pedal, if you know how to utilize it tastefully. Take some time with it, you can do whatever you want with it....within its limitations tho..lol

Whammy II

it's definitely  true that your tone gets messed with even when its in bypass, but personally i've found that it sounds kind of stupid in bypass, but if you just set the pedal to somewhere where its not doing anything it can be made to sound really interesting. i use it mostly with an electric mandolin outfitted with lace sensor pickups, and i like the way it makes them sound - a little fuller and more "live" (as in a live show recording), which works out in my ambient/ shoegazey music.
Reliability/Durability:
i give it a 7 because the paint is almost all gone, but otherwise it all still works great. must have gotten pretty throughly beat, too, to lose that much paint.
Ease of Use:
i got this thing used and it was obviously very used, but even though most of the labeling was rubbed off, i was still able to figure everything out by just plugging it in and messing with it. even the toggle mode is intuitive and incredibly useful. also, for anyone out there thinking about getting a whammy4; the whammy2 has about one centimeter of extra sweep in the footpedal, which makes a HUGE difference in your ability to smoothly articulate the effect.
Customer Support:
never had a problem with it... knock on fish...
Overall Rating:
i'm giving it a 10 because i bought it mainly based on the fact that kevin shields of my bloody valentine uses the wh1, which i can't afford, and i found this at a consignment shop for $70. knowing that it had the same ivl chip in it, i bought it and am now totally satisfied that it does what i thought it could do. i run it through a stereo 16 band eq and a bbe maxcom stereo rackmount compressor/limiter/noise gate/sonic maximizer and then into an old "blue tube II" preamp and the decapitated head of an ampeg ba115 combo bass amp. if you ever get a chance, put it together with a boss rdd-20 modulating delay and rc-2 loop machine (or a similar setup with, you know, stuff you've got) and launch into deep space. as for other random applications, the detune function makes my novation xiosynth sound way more natural and analog, somehow, despite being totally digital. as far as comparing it to a wh1; it has the same chip made by ivl in canada, so the people who say it doesn't sound the same probably just have the input level set too high (which makes it sound like a turd). my main complaint is the same one everyone has: no true bypass. i might try taking to a local shop and see what they can do with it, since i have heard that it is possible to mod them. also, i wish the wh2 had the same shallow and deep detune options as the wh1.  for some reason they didn't think deep detune was necessary. oh, and to the people who say "only the wh1 has all-metal construction": the wh2 does have plastic on it, but only the little side pieces, and even they are pretty beefy. all the rest, everything that matters, is solid metal.

the whammy II is suposed to be very close to the whammy 1. i have hurd people say it's no where near and some saying it's very close. personly after having it for a day and going through some rage against the machines to get usued to it, the sound is very close to the original. im running mine through all my effects, boss tu-2, boss psm-5, boss lm-2, boss odb-3, boss geb-7, boss syb-5, boss, bf-2, then the digitech whammy II then a watkins copicat. all straight into a ashdown mag300 bass amp(dont own a guitar amp anymore). i have hurd of the tone sap that these produce and it is noticable but it's not that bad. probably due to my long is effects set up. the effects work better with a nice high signal. try lowering the input level on the whammy and beef your singnal up with a compressor or line boost before hand. i find this works better
Reliability/Durability:
well i have only had it for a day but it seems to have held up pretty well untill now with previous usuers. this is more for my recording set up than gigging as im a bassist in a metal band but the drop 2 octave function could be useful. i would gig with this either way. only rated a 7 as i haven't abused it much yet so cand really comment
Ease of Use:
the whammy II is very easy to use. the main point with this pedal is experiment. it can be difficult to get a good sound out of especialy if using cords. the toggle function is very usefull. simply hold down the bottom switch till the green light flashs, select your first patch, hold the lower switch down again, select your second patch and hold down again. THEN YOUR DONE. as long as the green light is on your in toggle mode. hold the bypass down for 2 seconds and your back to the normal mode. very simple. i was lucky to get a manual but to be honest it's not really needed. a very simple effect when you get used to it
Customer Support:
never delt with them. hurd good things though
Overall Rating:
i play all different types of music. i like to record strange and wacky things in my spare time so this will fit right in. if it were lost, stolen or destroyed i would find another one. probably another whammy II. i dont think it's worth the extra few hundred quid to find a whammy 1. i would like the leval input getting rid of but once it's set it's no problem. i prefer the toggle function. much easier than letting go of your guitar bending down to rotate a knob just to change mode. i really dont think you loose all that much over the whammy 1's. if your after one to play with thy and find one of these. much cheeper and almost the original if not better

Whammy II

the reason i'm writing this review is to clarify wh-1 to wh-2.  the whammy 2 is badass, but if you think it sounds as good as a whammy 1 i think you're crazy.  a whammy 1 just sound so much more organic (which is weird cos it's anything but).  but seriously, imo, there's no comparison, and i'm sure someone will come on here later and say i'm an idiot, or that i'm only saying that because of what you have to pay for a whammy 1.  well, i paid almost as much for my whammy 2 as i did my wh1.  have you ever tried to get an exact sound from a record? not close, exact.  when you play with a wh1, it actually sounds like rage's first record.the 2 cannot pull that off, no matter what. it's an awesome pedal, but it can't. i'm not saying you're nuts if you buy a 2, but if you've got a gear problem like me, if you're gonna do something, do it right.
Reliability/Durability:
yes, you can depend on it, until it won't track octaves. but wh1s do it sometimes too, so oh well deal with it. whammys are weird like that.
Ease of Use:
the pedal's functionality is easy to get, but using a whammy the right way can take a while.
Customer Support:
tried to get a power supply that worked with my whammy 1 once. they were okay.
Overall Rating:
the whammy is my favorite pedal. and i own ALOT.  but the whammy 1 is better.  i used the whammy 2 for a while in my band sakajaweeda, and then went home one day and plugged in my whammy 1; i was like, why am i using the 2? this whole review pretty much was a comparison- if your question is with the whammy 2-they're awesome. i swear by it. but the whammy 1 is better plain and simple.

Whammy II

Review By:

Purchased From:
Price:
$300.00 USD
Features:
Sound Quality:
Crybaby>Ibanez chorus/flange> Ts9> Ibanez smashbox> Whammy> Boss Sustain/Compressor> Boomerang Sound quality depends totally on what effects are in front/beyond the whammy, which is typical if you have just a basic setup like mine. Perhaps more important is that I have hooked up my guitar directly to the whammy to the amp, to hear it by itself. Alone it sounds very good. In my loop, it gets a little hissy sometimes, its from my wah though. So sound is good, but in a loop, you might encounter some typical unwanted noises that you have to adjust your setup to counter.
Reliability/Durability:
Absolutely completely reliable except when it detunes. Im not sure how it happens, but if I checked up on it im sure its easily preventable, and it like almost never happens. Definetly would use it for a gig. A whammy combined with a boomerang is the most fun with two pedals ive ever had. If youre a phish fan, you need that combo (this is how trey gets the "ghost effect," more widely known as bombing, but i love phish, so its the ghost effect for me)
Ease of Use:
Easy to figure out, save the manual and dont freak out when it gets detuned, theres like 2 things to do to get it back to normal, but it will stay off tune and sound like a chorus unless you fix it, and thats in the manual, it takes 2 seconds to do.
Customer Support:
Never dealt, take care of your equipment if you consider it expensive, because if you do then its definetly going to be somewhat of a pain to take care of it. I would say Digitech's products are user friendly however.
Overall Rating:
I play almost exclusively along with phish live, over my stereo. So my rig is designed to as close as I can, resemble treys setup/sound. Theres definetly been many different things phish used to do effect and sound wise that I have tried to emulate, and its usually resulted in a new pedal. The single effect I have tried to conquer the most however is that "Bombing/ghost" effect that trey used to do all the time. By the way, if you have a whammy and a boomerang this is done by setting the whammy +2 octaves and making a loop of the pedal descending while holding any high note. Theres a few more tricks to perfect this technique to the way phish did it, and it took me a little while to get it, but once i did i had so much fun playing. The whammy has had a bigger effect on my playing than anything ive ever bought.
