Purchased From:
Ebay
Price:
$22.00 USD USED

Quite a simple layout, only four knobs. The pedal has level, low, high, and distortion controls, here labeled "Loud", "Low", "High", and "Grunge", respectively.  Being it a later-released DOD effects pedal, it has quite an interesting paintjob.  It is sort of light pinkish-purple metallic, with deeper purple cracks.  It can run on either 9V mains power or a single 9V battery.  The thing I love about DOD pedals is just how easily accessible the battery is. At the top end of the pedal, there is a small door that is hinged, and locks in, much like the battery door on many other electronic devices. Simply open up this door, and you have complete access to the battery. The pedal also has typical 1/4" in and output jacks, and a hard plastic footswitch.

Sound Quality:

This is quite possibly one of the gnarliest distortion pedals I've ever used. I've seen sites that sell the Grunge under the DigiTech brand, and these sites say that the pedal has an "edge of chaos" type of sound. This pedal delivers that in a compact, albeit very loud package.  One of the strangest things about the pedal is the fact that the pedal is called the "Grunge" distortion pedal.  However, it's sound is nothing like I've heard on any Nirvana or Alice in Chains album.  At first listen, after a quick adjustment of the two EQ knobs, the pedal takes on a very heavy and scooped type of sound.  The EQ knobs are very adjustable, allowing to shape the sound, although not completely.  The distortion, or "Grunge" knob, does not seem to have much adjustability. Even when the distortion is turned down to 0, the distortion remains very strong and present, although taking on more of a DS-1 type of sound.  Still, the Distorton is quite over the top, taking your axe from a smooth clean sound, to a complete chaotic grind. Still more metal and punk than grunge, though.

Reliability/Durability:

Built solid like a tank.  Only thing I really worry about is the footswitch.  Made of plastic, and hope that the switch internally doesn't go out.

Ease of Use:

It's a distortion box. Plug it in, turn it on, and crank it up!!

Customer Support:

Got it from Ebay. Self-explanatory.

Overall Rating:

If you're looking to give yourself a hard-edged, loud, gnarly, hellish distortion, the Grunge might be right for you.  Don't go for this pedal if your looking for a highly adjustable distortion box. Check it out if you can. However, if you cannot get ahold of the DOD model, go for the DigiTech model. I'm not sure if it's exactly the same, but I've heard that it has a similar sound.

I gave it a ten especialy for the price i paid. Also this pedal is great for soloing and has great sustain. This pedal ranges from motley to slipknot

I play metal and it is perfect for me. I own many distortion pedals including guyatone metal monster ,boss mt2,and a china made dod death metal. The dod grunge does not punch like guyatone but it competes with the rest.I would buy a new one if stolen

lots of treble. lots of bass. lots of gain. lots of boost. raa raa raaaaaa squeak raaaa crak 1. this thing sounds bad. 2. it is supposed to sound bad. 3. it sounds worse the louder it gets. 4. two of them together sound awful. hooray! face facts: DOD pedals have always been aimed at bedroom players, and have always sounded best at home. at gigging levels, they're ****. not just this pedal, but the entire range. but, by the balls of thor, they are such good fun. relax your ringpiece, srv tonealikes. just relax and let go. try to enjoy yourself for once, instead of crying about how little you sound like your idol.
Reliability/Durability:
got two: had to replace the battery lead on my old one a couple of time, damn crappy leads, but otherwise fine for a 14 year old pedal. main distortion for years. other one is just over a year old, no dramas.
Ease of Use:
4 knobs, we know.
Customer Support:
no idea.
Overall Rating:
come on, people. what do you expect? you will not climb the stairway to heaven with this pedal. nor will you find yourself in the white room. if that's your goal, the tubescreamers are over in the retirement home with all your other vintage crap. annoy the neighbours. deafen the cat. hate the police. grin manically. feedback oh feedback wah wah.

GREAT distortion/fuzz.  I have rediscovered this pedal after years of it sitting on my effects shelf.  I am more of an amp overdrive kinda guy (Mesa Orange Marshall Fender all in my studio) but this thing brings metal, full bore, upon you.  Easy grunge - metal sounds.  Usable with just a humbucker equipped guitar (come on a single coil just ain't for metal) and a power amp.  Tried it thru a friends Mesa D180 180watt mono amp (no preamp) and WHOA!  If you want early Pantera, it's here.  Alice In Chains Facelift, its here.  Soundgarden Badmotofinger, its here.  SRV, Clapton, Jimi, NOPE not close at all.
Reliability/Durability:
DOD USA pedals are tanks.  Ive had many of em since 89 and no problems.
Ease of Use:
First off this is the USA made FX-69 not the fx-69b crappy chinese junk.  This is metal incarnate.  Dime sleeps inside next to the battery.  4 knobs that pound distortion thru your skull.
Customer Support:
DOD were great for myself in the 90's.  Prior to internet, these folks would answer any questions personally or would send product brochures free of charge when other competitors charged fees.
Overall Rating:
I bought this pedal when it was first released.  It is a shame that they make the fx-69b as that underscores the value of this pedal.  It also still chaffes me when I see what these are going for now and remember what I paid.  Usually the ratio is reversed :-(

I use this thing for bass and I love it.  It's most certainly a synthetic, noisy, obnoxious piece of gear, but as long as you know what you're getting yourself into it does it well.  I have mine sitting after  a Boss PW-2 and together they will absolutely melt your face off.
Reliability/Durability:
It's a DOD
Ease of Use:
Come on, it's a stompbox.
Customer Support:
never had to deal with them.
Overall Rating:
If you're looking for a subtle and sparkling overdrive then you DO NOT want this thing, but if you want a loud and ridiculous monster then this guy is for you.  I've been playing for 14 years and I have to say that this is one of the best distortions for sheer madness I've come across.
