Subtle Flanging

Review By:
69cutty on 11/16/10 4:17 PM
Reviewer Background:
I play in a metal band, and have played in many bands over the last 10 years
Purchased From:
Used, Locally
Price:
CAD50.00 CAD USED
Features:

This pedal I find to be a very subtle flanger. It's features work well, but a tad difficult to understand. Depth, Rate, and Res are fairly straight forward. Figuring out how to use the manual knob is tricky and kind of the key to success with this thing. Not that it sounds terrible if you don't set it right, but that setting it right sets it apart from good to amazing.

Sound Quality:

For a wonderful subtle flanging experience, you need to try one of these. It's fantastic for lead lines because if you set it right, it really will leave enough of your signal intact to let the line come through with just some beautiful swirled icing on top. It's truly an effect pedal that makes it self used like effects should be used, tools, not tonal crutches. You can't hide crap playing behind this thing.

Reliability/Durability:

I got mine a few years ago works fine, save for the LED is quite dim compared to my modern Boss pedals that sit on either side of it. Not at all a tonal issue, and I will solder in a new one. After 20+ years this thing has been around, I think it's safe to say it's very reliable.

Ease of Use:

It's a straight forward flanger, except the manual knob.

Customer Support:

Haven't had to. Sorry. See reliability score.

Overall Rating:

It is a fantastic vintage flanger that sounds amazing, just subtly. I have also a Deluxe Electric Mistress as well flanging on many mult-effects unit and modeling amps and nothing sounds as clean and subtle as this one. Boss got it right, I wish they would re-release it.

Reliability/Durability:
Ease of Use:
this is the right pedal to play rithm , fuk guitar with this HF-2 is really FUNK , also it give a doobie feeling when playing REGGAE , i used to used it with my band ILHA REGGAE NATTY CONGO , and it makes the diference ...and for ballads with dissonant chords , this is the unit!!!!
Customer Support:
i bought a second hand
Overall Rating:
well i play all styles from BLUES to REGGAE , CLASSICAL to CHORINHO , i'm brazilian , i live in RIO DE JANEIRO , and here for make a living with music you have to make it all. I have a long set of effects runnig from BOSS CS-3(compression/sustainer) , MORLEY WHA , DOD 25BfX (envelope filter), BOSS OD-2 (turbo overdrive) , BOSS GE-7 (equalizer) , BOSS HF-2 (hi-band flanger),EHX SMALL CLONE (chorus) , BOSS RV-2 (D.reverb)...and this HF-2 it works really well with a lot of settings along with the others , and just a trick : when it is used along the compression and reverb it is somewhere near paradise !!!

i bought this unit from a guy at a guitar show

Great sound i like this unit more than the newer BF-2. I like how it picks up the higher notes well hence "high band". This is a great pedal to this day and it was built in the 80's. Too bad it discontinued.
Reliability/Durability:
This unit is is 20+ years old and still kickin to this day. I think its safe to say its reliable.
Ease of Use:
standard boss 4 knobs easy enough for me.
Customer Support:
never had to deal with them.
Overall Rating:
This is a great pedal to pick up clean notes for a cool added effect, but also cool for doing solos or bar chords to give a really good effect.

This is a great flanger.  Analog purists would probably want to pass it up.  It has a very digital sound.  I went with this one because it is much more subtle than the BF-2.  It only affects the upper frequencies, so it's not as thick as the BF-2.  Great for a very crisp sound.  It can sometimes become overwhelming with distortion, depending on what your EQ is like.
Reliability/Durability:
Boss quality.  Solid and depenable.
Ease of Use:
If you're used to Boss pedals and are familiar with how a pedal works, this one is no different.  It does take time to get used to how it only affects the higher frequencies.
Customer Support:
Never had a problem with a Boss pedal.
Overall Rating:
This pedal is great.  I play progressive rock and it fits with my music perfectly.  It is hard to find, but for someone who likes the BF-2 and wants something more subtle, it's worth it

Think of this a flanger 'light.'  If you are looking for deep, wide jet flanges and heavy metal effects then go with the BF-2. This flanger does very subtle stuff-chorus, doubling, phasing, slight swirls. It is very smooth especially with a clean guitar setting. The noise is no worse than any other flanger, in fact, the higher flanging frequency actually hides some of the moise when you are not playing. Nowhere near the sound of an MXR, EH, or ADA pedal. Again, a light flanger-and if that is what you want this pedal is great.
Reliability/Durability:
It's a Boss pedal so expect it to last forever.
Ease of Use:
Once you spend a few hours with this pedal you can figure out what it will and won't do for you. There are loads of settings you can dial in, and small changes of any of the four knobs can change the whole sound.
Customer Support:
Overall Rating:
If you accept it for what it is-a lighter version flanger- you will enjoy this pedal. If you play heavy rock/metal and need the thicker, deeper flanging this pedal isn't for you. Alot different than the BF-s, MXR, EH, or ADA flangers.
