make sure your playing into a CLEAN amp. this isn't a booster and it ain't no tubescreamer; it's a big muff. the tone reminds me of some of the early 70's big muffs. Think of it like a a big muff that lets you sculpt the tonal character. pretty sweet muff style fuzz, great for stoner rock, smashing pumpkins, dinosaur junior, sonic youth, stooges type stuff. soaring leads and heavy power chords are go. very saturated and dripping with harmonics. a metric pluck ton of gain; already sounds heavy with the drive at zero so don't be afraid to keep the drive set low.
Reliability/Durability:
Ease of Use:
pretty straight forward. lots of tonal variation between the "fat" and "muscle" controls. i would have named these controls "body" instead of "fat" and "spectrum" instead of "muscle". once you get the hang of it it's easy to get just the right balance for each guitar/amp combo.

Overall Rating:
this is a pretty killer pedal in reality and also a very unique and musical one. i would recommend this for pro level players looking for a creamy muff style fuzz tone. if your looking for an overdrive or classic distortion sound this will only frustrate you.

It can really overdrive a tube amp with such tone (AC15CC or 30 even a handwired I tested was very warm with the PW-2) Used in a very nice rig here: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=132434&page=2
Reliability/Durability:
Boss stomps will survive a good talking to !!
Ease of Use:
No problem 'driving' a sound here, look beyond the control's settings and use like a compressor, close your eyes and set it up.
Customer Support:
Never sent a Boss stomp back in 20yrs.
Overall Rating:
Dropped 1 mark as these are so hard to get now and collectors have snapped up the last stocked one's. If you can find one do not hesitate to buy one.

As far as sound quality it beats all the rest of my dist. pedals. And I have alot of em. I have a Ibanez DS7, a Boss Metal Zone, A boss Hyper Metal, a Electro Harmonix Dual Muff, and a few home made distortion pedals I have built my self.....which are kinda lacking due to bad schematics. But yeah. Out of all of my distortion pedals, it is my favorite one. I can dial in a number of sounds like Queens of the Stone Age's Burn The Witch to Black Sabbath's Never Say Die to Edger Winters Frankenstein. The Setup I am usually using is an Gibson Explorer, Fender Roadhouse Strat through a Boss GE-7 EQ, a Boss OC-2 Octave, a Ibanez PH-7 Phaser, a Ibanez CF-7 Chorus/Flanger(2nd output to Peavy Rage for high end), a BBE Noise Supresser, a Dunlop Standerd Wha, a Boss PW-2 Power Driver, a Ibanez DS-7 Distorion, a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone, a Morley ABY Switch running stereo through my Marshall G215R and Alamo Amps Model Number 3. Although with out the noise supression it does get kinda noisy with the Modulation effects active, But remeber they are all run pre distortion for extra "creamy-ness". And yes. They all sound up to par every time I use them. No wiring issues or anything. Just pure tone. Oh yeah. I dont use the Dual Muff so much cus it is really similar to the Boss Power Driver.
Reliability/Durability:
Boss builds Mini-Tanks. Period.
Ease of Use:
Very easy to use. Although, yes the muscle and fat knobs are really midrange and bass. But yes Very easy to use.
Customer Support:
I have never modified it. Ever. And like I sead before. Boss builds fricken MINI-TANKS! I got it from a freind of a freind who gave me a crate of cables and a "few" pedals cus he was moving and was "done" with music. One of which was my Lovley Boss Power Driver. I have never parted with it ever since. It is a HUGE part of my tone.
Overall Rating:
My overall rating is a danm 10. In my book, in which I play Classic Rock, Blues, Industrial, Electronic Music, R&B, and "sigh" metal, It is one of the few Perfect Distortion Pedals I have tried. I have been using this thing for almost 8 years now and love every second of it. If I had ever lost it, I would a danm heart attack. I can never find anyone selling one online anywhere. Never. I want a spare one. Badly. This thing is a part of my soul.

First of all my setup. I've tried this pedal at home where I use a stereo setup. A Marshall JTM30 and a Fender Blues Junior with a bunch of other pedals, most of them are Boss. The guitar I used is a Gibson LP standard. I've tried this pedal a while ago en I must say, I didn't like it at all so I didn't buy it back than. A few weeks ago I saw an other one and since I like to own every compactpedal Boss made so I bought it. I connected it and it sounded just as worse as the first time I tried, but... Than I also connected a overdrive pedal, in this case a Boss OD-1 (before the PW-2) and started to tweak them. When you use a overdriven input the PW-2 comes alive!! It turned the OD-1's sound into a big 4x12 stack and I was really suprised! Although I used pretty extreme settings (level at 5, fat 10 Mus. 0.5 drive 4. It gave me a rich and fat tone and much joy!! Great thing is that all the knobs on both pedals can be used for alterning the sound. So I would say for standalone use I rate it a 2. In combination with a overdrive pedal I rate it a 8! I'm pretty sure that it works well with other units, I soon try is with a OD-3 to benifit the OD-3's tone knob.
Reliability/Durability:
It's a Boss, I own about 50 of them, even a few from the early eighty's and I've never had any problem with a Boss.
Ease of Use:
4 knobs, how hard can it get?
Customer Support:
Never dealt with them
Overall Rating:
Like I said before, in combination with an overdrive pedal this thing sounds great. I don't know if I would use it for a gig because for this good sound I need to pedals and I've got limited space on my pedalboard but I'm pretty sure I plug it in at home soon enough.

Not an overdrive. If you are looking for an overdrive this pedal will surely disapoint you. I can only compare this to one other pedal and that is a triangle era big muff. Very close in sound. If you like that sound, you will like this pedal. I came to this pedal with no expectation at all. I had no idea what it would sound like. Overall I think this a pretty good effort from boss. I think the word driver is what puts people off. They think they are going to get a really powerfull overdrive sound and they get a fuzz/distortion instead. Someone said this is digital, um...that would surprise me very much. I'm pretty sure it's analog. You can get some david gilmour tones with this. Smashing pumpkins, mudhoney etc... Not a revolutionary sound, you've heard it before, but not from a boss size pedal. I prefer this to the NYC and Russian big muffs because it sounds more like the vintage triangle muff meaning little more clear and less saturated than the later muffs.
Reliability/Durability:
Ease of Use:
Kinda tricky with the tone controls. They are very active and effect the distorion character.

A nice pedal from boss. Not mind blowing but better than some people give it credit for.
