First off, this pedal was given to me by a guy in my office for nothing, so I think I'll have a pretty un-biased opinion about it.  Mine is a Japanese 'Octaver' version of this pedal built in 1983. Here's my setup for those keeping score: 2007 Gibson Les Paul Standard (stock) > Dunlop GCB-95 > Boss OC-2 > Boss MD-2 > Boss BD-2 > Boss CE-3 > Line 6 Echo Park > Traynor YCS-100H > Traynor Y-212.  The CE-3 and the Echo Park are on the Traynor's effects loop. Ok, everything you've read about this pedal from every review on this page is true.  It's pretty much useless from the 8th fret down, chords sound my dog after I fed him too much fat off a steak from last week (hint: it wasn't a good sound).  That said, when you do figure out what this thing can do, you can get some real interesting sounds out of it.  As others have mentioned, this is an analog pedal therefore behaves very differently then it's digital brothers.  My personal favorite use for this thing is to turn all the volumes to full, and turn on my MD-2 and my BD-2 and use it to cut a really odd sounding lead high up on the neck.  It creates this heavily overdriven howl effect that really doesn't sound like anything else.  Guys in my band have said "We've gotta find a place for that". It's a bit of a weird beast, because it's very limited in what it can do, but if you know what you're getting into I suppose this is what you'd want.
Reliability/Durability:
Boss es bueno
Ease of Use:
Pretty simple, the three knobs are volumes.  Direct Level is your dry signal, OCT 1 is down one octave, OCT 2 is down two octaves.  Just load and go.
Customer Support:
Do they even need this?

I'm a blues-rock-metal dude, this pedal was dropped in my lap one day and to date is still on my board, although it doesn't get used all that often.  If I lost it, I probably wouldn't replace it, but for now it's a fun toy to pull out every so often just to get people to give you the "What the F*ck was that?" look.

Here's what i'm working with..  Fender Strat > Boss Octave > Boss compression sustainer > TS9 (stock) > ibanez delay > mxr gain boost > Fender hot rod Deville (2x12) I usually leave the Boost on to thicken up my sound but still keep a clean sound.  The OC2 sounds very good alone and combined with the Boost sounds a little thicker, which is good.  With the TS9 and Boost i get a really nice sound.  With the guitar vol. rolled to 7 or 8 i get a slightly overdriven sound and the octave gives me that precious Jerry tone, great for solo's.  Chords don't track very well at all so single note are the best use for this pedal.  Sounds great with delay, still kinda iffy with the compression sustainer tho, i heard it should tighten up the track on the OC2 if placed before it, like i have it, but im not sure if i like it combined with the CS3. BTW, Octave 1 is the sub octave (extremely deep) and Octave 2 is 1 octave lower than the original note.
Reliability/Durability:
As reliable as any other boss pedal i guess. Spilt a little bit of beer on my pedalboard a month or so ago and got a couple pedals kinda wet but no damage as far as i can see/hear.  The adapter input was a little wet but i didnt see if the inside was wet or not, regardless, still works as good as it always has.  Hasn't let me down yet. (knock on wood)
Ease of Use:
3 knobs: octave 1 - direct level - octave 2... can't get much simpler than that. The direct level adjusts the blend between the octave sound and the signal going into the pedal.  Rolled all the way up, mostly clean is heard, all the way down, mostly octave is heard. My settings: Octave 1 at 11 o'clock, Direct Level at 1-2 o'clock and Octave 2 at 1-2 o'clock.
Customer Support:
Never really had to complain or needed service about boss pedals.  built tough and gig worthy.
Overall Rating:
Overall, great pedal, would definitely buy it again if it broke. Well worth it, bought mine used on ebay in great condition, sounds great and i use it at every show.  It adds great depth and a cool effect to solo's or single note riffs and easy to get a good sound out of.

This is an update from my last review. I have found two ways to use this that sound amazing. First, dime all the knobs in front of an overdrive. Second, dime the direct signal, and put the octaves both straight up, and put the pedal in front of a ring modulator. Last, the overdrive.

Here's my setup. US HWY 1 Fender Strat, OC-2, BOSS FBM-1 (fender bassman amp modeler), DOD FX55B Supra Distortion, BOSS RC-2 looper, Marshall MG100HDFX. This pedal sounds good when used properly. First off, it sounds better with a little distortion after it, preferably with a low boost, which the supra does exceptionally well. Also, if you play on the lower notes, the OC-2 doesn't track very well and you get a jarbled sound, like a broken synth. ALSO, you can't play chords - only one note at a time. This does not have the polyphonic function like the OC-3, or similar type pedals. This is an analog pedal, therefore it has it's limitations. So, if used properly, as in single note leads higher up near the 12th fret, this little beast can do the job quite well, adding up to two octaves down to the notes played. Despite the great sounds when used properly, I give it a lower rating because it's such a picky pedal. Half the neck sounds good through it, the other half sounds like trash.
Reliability/Durability:
This pedal is very reliable. I wouldn't worry about a backup. As most people know, Boss pedals are very durable.
Ease of Use:
Easy as bending down and turning 3 knobs. The manual basically gives a few suggested settings, nothing you couldn't figure out on your own. If you really want it, http://bossus.com has all their manuals in downloadable pdf formats. And this is the Taiwan version, not the OC-2 "OCTAVER" as it was called when it was produced in Japan.
Customer Support:
Can't say I know, but that their website does have some helpful info, such as downloadable manuals and such.
Overall Rating:
Overall I'd say this is a great little pedal, but it's not for everyone. A skilled guitarist will find ways to use this pedal to thicken up his sound and create unique leads, but in the hands of a novice guitarist it would probably just end up getting as a bass guitar emulator or an "experimental" effect. Honestly, sometimes I actually do use it to add a bass loop on the BOSS RC-2 when I'm jamming, but it's good for much more.

Well I wont say my chain of effects hahaa but i will say use it after a decent 'vintage' compressor. May not comply with toppy effects units. I use dist and overdrive after this pedal took me a while to set all three but sounds excellent!
Reliability/Durability:
Depends on the gig...
Ease of Use:
Boss oc-2 Octaver You have to mess round' wit this thing to get your sound and levels right. When u got it yo got it! its not the easiest pedal to use on my board but was well worth changing the chain around a bit to make this pedal fit, I use it after my compressor for guitar and no compressor for bass and yes it does work well with bass to no need for a seperate bass input....
