Zipper Envelope Filter

It has that old, warm, lush Junior Marvin sound from the classic Bob Marley records. I could not get that out of any other filter I've tried. Ad a little grit and dirt and you can get into Funcadelic/Parliament territory in no time, and Curtis Shaft, and any old authentic 70's envelope sound you are looking for - it's there in spades. This is a time machine running on a 9V battery. My ZIPPER is not especially noisy. I don't expect that it is true bypass, but it does not steal any noticable tone when in OFF mode either.
Reliability/Durability:
Opening an old Electro Harmonix pedal is a scary thing. The inside usually looks like it's soldered by a five year old. It's the same in my old 70's Small Stone. I recommend that you keep the lid on and only open these old pedals to put in a new battery. They look extremely fragile, (and probably are). So far I've had no problems with either of my two old EH pedals and they've been in use for 30+ years, so I guess they are more rugged than they look. If I ever find another ZIPPER i'd get it for backup just to be safe.
Ease of Use:
This is the easiest envelope filter I've used, because it is hard not to make it sound great. Two pots and two knobs, that's it. Works equally good for guitar or bass. I was lucky a few years ago and got to lend a box full of envelope filters from a guitarplayer in a local reggae band. He had most of the classics. The Dod, the AF-9, the Q-tron and mini-Qtron, and a few others, some vintage some new. I went through them all and liked the Q-tron and original AF-9 the best. But when I found an old ZIPPER from the late 70's last year it blew my mind, and it blows these other pedals right out of the water - no comparison. The ZIPPER just sounds right for me.
Customer Support:
Don't know. These are older than my grandma, so I guess they warranty run out before the first Star Wars film had it's premier.
Overall Rating:
If someone stole my ZIPPER my funk mojo would be gone. BAD BAD. I'd have to start a religious cult and stick voodoo needles in the thiefs member. There ain't no other envelope filter out there that sounds like this, unless the original Mutron is as good - I've never tried one of those. If you are into old school funk this is it. If you want a harsh, modernsounding envelope look somewhere else. I like the sounds I hear from that Electro Harmonix sales film on youtube on the new TUBE ZIPPER. But that pedals sounds nothing like the old original ZIPPER. It's seems to be a much more modern sounding pedal. I'd like one of those as well, but I would not trade my original one for the new one. Not a chance. Last one I saw on ebay was for sale for 350 $. I did not pay that much, but I'd say it's worth it for sure.

I play clean and warm. Strat through '62 Showman. Really into complex guitar rhythms, which this pedal accentuates. Makes some noise like all old pedals, but worth it.
Reliability/Durability:
Fragile. Watch out.
Ease of Use:
This little box is old and scratched to hell, but is the best envelope filter I've used. Period. Two knobs and a couple switches, real easy to use. Not made for years and not yet reissued. Differences between envelope filters are a little hard to describe--but basically this things is a real soft, sweet and warm filter: think of the opening guitar lick for "Let's get it on" by Marvin Gaye. Not right for hard funk or extreme sweeps (the Q-tron fits that bill better). But perfect for beautiful rhythm sweeps. Not common. If you find one, jump on it.
Customer Support:
Not a chance.
Overall Rating:
Better than any other pedal I've used (Q-tron, Mutron, DOD, Boss, T.C. Electronic G-Major). Rare but affordable because it's pretty unknown. No exaggeration--best filter around. If I see any more I'm buying them for back-ups.

This is it! This is the one. I have played and collected almost every envelope filter auto wah ever made. and this is the best. Hands Down. I love it till the cows come home. Buwowppthhhwaaat. I like to sometimes overdrive the front end and compress after. Also always put a volume pedal behind it so you can open up the guitar and really hit the filter without spiking the amp. Then you put a green ringer , an octave divider or an octavia deally-o in front and look out. Its the freaky techno synth guy. I run a PRS hollowbody II->Musitronics Octave Divider->Teese RMC 3 wah->TS808->Ibanez Super Tube->Electro Harmonix Zipper->Ross Grey Compressor->mxr script phase 90->Arion Chorus->Ernie Ball Volumne Pedal->DM2->DM2->Boss DD5->1966 Fender Deluxe Reverb. oooh oooh oooh. Tone out the arse! You can check out samples at Randtronics and check out my band Freshly Baked
Reliability/Durability:
Its old and analog sometimes it works sometimes it don't. Especially with temperature or altitude changes. Play 1 night in LA the next in Phoenix the next in Colorado. I always bring a backup filter and sometimes just for a change of vibe. I have a second one but i will backup with an ibanez af9 or a mxr envelope filter or a mutron micro V
Ease of Use:
this is pretty easy for an envelope filter. But you gotta be down with envelope filters and how to use them. Be it jerry style or muted funk pickasticka reggae or bass styles. Gotta find that old sweet spot in between yer gitar and yer amp. Compared to a mutron it is a little easier but not as easy as a mxr envelope filter.
Customer Support:
EH and mike matthews probably aint much help. But you find the inventors of this fine thing who also made mutron 3, and qtron...Mike Beigle and Elliot Randall
Overall Rating:
Like i said.. Its the cheese. I have used mutron 3, micro V, Af9 Af201, mxr, Boss twah, FT2, AW2, Seamoon Funk Machine, qtron, DOD 440 and have even built my own. This is the coolest of the bunch. Good luck finding one.

I'm using it mostly for clean funky stuff (can you play groovy 70- and 80´s disco and funk without one?) with a 77 fender vibrolux reverb and a strat. It's very versital. It's a bit noisy though so that will keep the rating down a bit.
Reliability/Durability:
I changed the dead potentiometer when i found it, since then thers never been a problem.
Ease of Use:
You can just stomp on it and it will sound cool. It will work for bass players as well because you can change the envelope range.I

I think it's a absolute must for those who plays disco and funk music! And I've never heard an envelope filter thats even close to the Zipper.

the cleanest, brightest, most orgasmic sweep an envelope filter can have!! I'm surprised that I am the first submission for the zipper.
Reliability/Durability:
this is the drawback, if you can find one that works you are lucky. They are all old, and I don't think Sovtek is planning on reissuing them.
Ease of Use:
two knobs, 2 switches pretty darn simple.
Customer Support:
I wouldn't know
Overall Rating:
DOD, Yamaha, Boss...can't shake a stick at the zipper... If anybody can locate functional zippers please email me!
