this is a foxx tone machine copy.imo it seems to be BASED on a tone machine , more than it is a "dead nuts" clone.not a bad thing though. i've played a foxx and i find this fuzz to be more usable on it's own than the org.less shril sounding. played it with a strat & a les paul through a marshall 100 watt 112 combo.i love this pedal.total stoner rock.the fuzz seems to have hints of 2nd octave even without the octave engaged.then lots more promanate when kicked in.i find this very cool.the vol. level seems to deffect the tonal caracter as well as vol.(weird)but it still not a bad thing(more tonal opptions)the sustain knobgets you diff. levels of gain but pretty much stays in stoner land.the tone turned more counter clockwise gets into big muff territory.full clockwise more foxx sounding.like most octaves it sounds best w/ the neck pick up in the upper frets of the neck.i liked the strat on the neck pick up w/ the vol. on the guitar turned down the best.but both guitars sounded great.i don't think this will find a place on my regular pedal board, but i've set up a new stoner rock pedal board sence getting this.(just the stone machine,a morley rotating power wah,& a dano mini flanger.on a slab of wood)sounds killer for this kind of stuff . can't see needing anythig else.so is it a foxx tone machine. not realy. is it an awsome pedal.ABSOLUTLY.i think this alturnative to the foxx witch fetches $400 @under $200 this thing RULES.i like it better than the foxx i played.
Reliability/Durability:
to soon to tell.but it's built like a tank.the only reason i would bring a back up is because there is no power jack & i always forget to check batteries.
Ease of Use:
pretty easy.3 knobs. vol./sustain(gain)/tone.2 switches on/off & octave on/off. the manual just says what the knobs do,i think thats self explanetory.no sugested settings.no power jack.
Customer Support:
seems like a realy cool guy.i got the pedal in about 2 months. i would say sence i ordered it just before thanks giving & got it mid jan.for a guy w/ a famaly &@@@2@@@ jobs.he got it out pretty quick. THANKS RON

Stone Machine

I play a Fender Stratocaster, or a Tele, both with Texas Special pick-ups through a 73 Marshall 50w or a Mesa Boogie Mark 1. The bass are tight and the treble clear and not raspy. A little scooped in the mid frequencies. When you stomp on it you definetely know that it's there. We're not talking of a subtle effect! I've never owned a true Foxx tone machine, so I cannot say if the SM is a good reproduction. But I sure can say that it sounds quite good. I found that for my playing is better setting the sustain low, this way the chords come out powerful and clear, but even at high sustain settings the sound is beautiful. Very different from a Big Muff, much more aggressive sounding and better responsive to hard-soft playing. The octave up sound is pretty cool too, and you have the benefit of having it at the push of a second switch. No toggle switch here. It combines very well with other effects, you only have to make some tests to decide their order in the chain.
Reliability/Durability:
It seems very well built, Hammond box, good pots and jacks and 3PDT Fulltone switch for an absolute bypass. I've had it for not long, so I can't really say. Anyway Ron provides a lifetime guarantee for his boxes. The red paint comes off very easily but that's not really a matter of interest to me. I must say that I like better worn pedals!
Ease of Use:
The box is pretty simple to use. Three knobs (volume, sustain, tone) and two switches (on-off, octave up). You can't go wrong.
Customer Support:
Well, I had to wait a long long time to have the pedal done. But I guess that Ron had to deal with some troubles in his personal things, so I didn't push him taht much. Anyway I got my pedal, and given that I was in no hurry, to me it was fine!
Overall Rating:
The SM is really a beautiful pedal, well built and good sounding. Massive and not nasty. It has already found its place in my pedalboard. It works really good on bass too. I borrowed to my group bass player and he was reall surprised of the power and dynamics of the SM. An inspiring tool for playing. The wait has been worth.

The whole reason for this review is because I was surprised how good this thing sounded. My interest was originally piqued by the sound wav. files of this unit featured on the Tone Frenzy site (www.tonefrenzy.com). The wav. files suggested a very heavy, almost octave down distortion. Sounded fun so I ordered it. The interim between getting a working unit in my hands and the original order truely sucked (see Customer Service) but the sound quality was wonderful. The distortion is very rich. Past halfway on the sustain knob and you have "Black Sabbath-in-a-box". Heavy, thick, sludgey fun. But the real surprise was the lower more conservative settings. Using a Les Paul Classic with Rio Grandes PU's I am able to get ultra smooth, thick, singing grind from 2 to 5 on the sustain knob. Very Claptonesque vintage voiced. The octave is a real treat too. Very present and liquid. In fact it is now my favorite 'octave up' sound, that I've yet heard. Like the distortion, very thick and singing. It works great just leaving it on. Playing below the 12th fret gives a nice grind with cool octave up overtones, then moving up above the 10th fret makes this wailing, sustaining octave sound jump right out. Very cool.
Reliability/Durability:
Housing is thin aluminum with an orange paint job that looks like it was done with a spray can. Very amatuerish. The on/off footswitch was defective right out of the box. Cheap plastic knobs. The whole thing feels and looks like it was made on someone's project bench. Wouldn't dare depend on it.
Ease of Use:
The Stone Machine is a remake of the famous vintage OD/octave up pedal the Foxx Tone Machine. In this new incarnation creator Ron Neeley is currently housing the unit in a Big Muff-like aluminum stomp box with all controls on the top surface (on the orignal Tone Machine the controls were on the side on the unit). One important deviation from the original design is that the octave up function now has its own footswitch. A real improvement over the original design. Features are footswitch on/off (not true bypass), footswitch octave, volume, tone, sustain, in and out 1/4" jacks. Operation is by internal 9V battery only.
Customer Support:
Customer service sucked! Ron Neeley told me 2 week turnaround. It was 8 weeks, with three "what's going on" e-mails from me in the interim. Then when I got it the on/off footswitch was defective right out of the box! He hadn't even tested it before he shipped it. I had to send it back. He did fix it quickly. Had it back to me in 1 1/2 weeks. Almost 10 total weeks to get a properly working unit in my hands.
Overall Rating:
Good points - cheap, sound great, really has a unique voice, great octave up sound. Lots of fun Bad points - Took a long time to get one (mine is only the 6th Stone Machine built), was defective immediately, built in a very amatuerish fashion. Most of my current FX's are Fulltone, Way Huge, and Barber Electronics. I guess I'm pretty spoiled after dealing with those very professional people. Overall its worth the money for a fun new toy, if you dont mind the wait and you dont spend too much time staring at this little eye sore.

Stone Machine

I use a Univox High Flyer (3rd generation with humbuckers)with the Big Muff, wah, ds-1, small stone, dod fx-68, dod echo fx, into a Sovtek Mig 60. With this thing on unless you like noise as well just keep playing, static and sometimes Mexican radio like to follow this happy little fella wherever he goes. Strong loud pedal, you can go from Satisfaction to "who the hell is pulling on a crane's testicles," on the Cramps' 'Reelinnrockininauklandnewzealandxxx' it sounds like ivy and the bass player at the time were using the tone machine, the sound is identical, I guess if you were to pick up any other mid eighties Cramps it may have the same sound but I've only heared them on this and 'Gravest hits'. The thing I like is how when you play a chord you get ssssssshhhhhhhhhhh sort of in the key of what you played working well for 'The Preist they Call Him' or pissing off squares, step on this thing and FREAK OUT PEOPLE!
Reliability/Durability:
Here is one thing I just don't know about. Had it a month and it's pretty scratched up but scratches dont matter. What i'm worried about is that the metal is light, probly thin aluminum, and that makes it weak stupid. But now that I think of it I have never heared of a pedal that was ever smashed in, on accident that is.
Ease of Use:
Plug in and be creative. Duh it's an analog pedal how hard can it be. Volume, Tone, Sustain, knobs, Bypass and Octave switches. Led's would be nice but they do drain batteries and are only a luxurie. By the way this is Ron Neeley's Foxx Tone Machine clone. The octive up is very predominant in the sound (at least the way I hear it) the higher the note the more pronounced teh tone.
Customer Support:
Ronn Neeley II was very nice and seems like a cool guy for those of you who don't know, he is the EH Man http://home.earthlink.net/~theehman/ great sight. The complaint that I have is that it took a while for him to get the needed materials for the pedal but I really can't blame him as my pedal is marked as Stone Machine #oo3, and he said he thought he had all the parts for my order but diddn't so we had to wait for them to get shipped before he could make the pedal. Hopefully the rest of his orders will run smoother in the future, for his and the buyer's benifit.
Overall Rating:
This pedal works great for 60's Psych, Garage Rock, some punk, Phsychobilly, Fuzzy Surf, Noise, Grunge, whatever the Doors and Iron Butterfly were, Noisey Blues (think Jimi), and would probly fit into one of those new thechno-folk-newwave-goth-elbowmusic-chesemetal bands, and it would probly work well for Beer Rock(like in a commercial) and dont forget spandex Perm Rock. Don't limit yourself, if you want to use it in a Jewel cover band or an ol' fassion Dixie band do it. If it were stolen I would sent Leadbelly over to find whoever stole it and have him hit them over the head with a whiskey bottle, then once I got a real job buy another. i love the ridiculous amount of distortion this thing lets out and me and my guitar player Richard were laughing at how much sustain this thing contains. Later he was shaking his head. Buy this and join my army of people with way too much fuzz in their music.
