Morpheus Droptune

Review By:

Purchased From:
PMT Birmingham UK
Price:
GBP95.00 GBP USED
Features:

This is a simple pedal which polyphonically lowers your guitar tuning in 1.2 step increments, down to 3 1/2 step from your original tuning. There is also an octaver built in, and a trim dial which helps control the incoming signal from the guitar.

There is a toggle button to quickly switch between your original tuning and your drop tuning and a hardwired bypass for when the unit is not being used.

It runs off a supplied power adaptor, but doesn't allow for the optional use of batteries, so I'm going to mark it down on that basis only.

Sound Quality:

Generally I'm impressed with the sound of the pedal. Some reviewers have commented on the pedal changing their guitar tone adversely, and latency issues, and yes it does do this to a small degree.

I think the user needs to know what they expect from this pedal. This is an artifical way of down tuning a guitar, so it will never sound the same as actually manually down tuning the guitar itself, however, it does get extremely close.

The notes track very well (double checked this with a tuner) and it picks up all the nuances of your playing IE: hard and soft picked notes, harmonics, squeals, sustain etc with no clipping.

It can also cope with single notes, power chords, full chords and fast soloing.

I must note here, that to get the best from the pedal, you need to play notes and  chords acurately, but this is a good thing as it will only improve your playing

You do get a little more bass in your tone the lower you go with the pedal, but the same would happen if you tuned the guitar down anyway as the lower frequencys take over. This can easliy be sorted by tweeking your amp settings

There is a small amount of latency in the output, but this ranges from vertually nil at 1/2 step down, to a small amount at the lowest setting. This isn't really a problem, as it feels more like a slower attack on the note due to slacker strings, the same as you would get from being tuned down that low anyway.

I did noted that on the lower tuning settings, the sound seems to blend with the octaver a bit and become more processed, but you still get a very usable sound.

The octaver function is good, but there isn't any way to alter it, as you might do on a dedicated octaver pedal. I don't tend to use octavers anyway, so it's not really a problem for me.

Reliability/Durability:

It seems sturdy enough. Metal casing with plastic user interface.

Ease of Use:

Very easy to use. Plug guitar in, output to the amp or other effect pedals.

Set input volume with the help of leds.

LED light tells you what setting you are on and if the unit is in operation or not.

Customer Support:

Not had to use them yet.

Overall Rating:

I play in a few different tuning and had different guitars permanently set up accordingly, however, I was getting bored playing the same guitar for the same songs, so I thought this would be the answer.

So far im very happy with it and it allows me to set up my guitars the same and choose which ever one I want to play in whatever tuning I want, with no real compromise on tone.

The only thing to bear in mind is that it wont change a standard tuned guitar in to a dropped D guitar, so that still needs to be done manually, but for overall down tuning, this is perfect and has allowed me to make more use of my guitar collection.

By the way, I have been playing 18 years and extremely fussy about my sound. I did have concerns over whether or not this pedal would work as well as advertised, and I think it does. Its not perfect, but it is very close and extremely usable.

I am a bedroom guitarist. I use this with Gibson Les Pauls into Boss multieffects or a Line6 Pod.
Purchased From:
Absolute Music Solutions (UK)
Price:
GBP130.00 GBP
Features:

This pedal allows you to downtune your guitar's output signal before the effects chain. It has only an input and output (no effects loop) and comes with a power supply. No option to run off batteries.

It can drop up to 7 1/2 steps in 1/2 step increments, an octave, or an octaver.

There is an input level dial to adjust the gain coming off your guitar and volume LEDs to help.

Three footswitches. The first two to move up and down the tunings, and a third latching on/off. When on, the middle or 'up' switch acts as a momentary (non-latching) 'off'.

Sound Quality:

This does colour your guitar's tone, so I would recommend trying one with your own gear first. As I usually drop tune only when playing with distortion, this doesn't bother me in the slightest. Contrary to rumours I have read on the internet, I haven't noticed any latency whatsoever.

As I use this mainly for playalong, I have found it most useful on settings 1, 2, and 7.

I can quickly switch between playing:

Black Sabbath, grunge and thrash - mainly 'setting 1' - E tuning, occasionally needing to manually tune down the low-E one step for Drop D,

Machine Head - manually tune down the low-E one step and setting 2-ish (they tune to 435hz - there needs to be a 'Machine Head' setting between '2' and '3'!) Drop C,

Korn - 'setting 7', equivalent of the bottom 6 strings of a 1-step-downtuned 7-string).

In addition, there is an octave-drop and an octaver, both of which are incredible. They will work with full chords which beats pretty much everything else out there. I certainly don't need my Boss octave pedal any more.

The momentary switch feature is an interesting one, which could no doubt open a few creative doors for songwriters (and ideal for retrieving the higher notes). I personally had fun using it to play the intro to Iron Maiden's 'Flash Of The Blade' just playing single notes on the G.

I've scored an 8 solely because it colours your guitar's tone.

Reliability/Durability:

Rugged metal pedal area. Plastic 'screen' and underside. Treat it with respect.

Ease of Use:

This device requires no manual. Plug in and go. Beautifully simple.

Overall Rating:

It's not perfect, so I would recommend trying before buying. Having said that, I didn't and I love it. If I was in GWAR, I'd hope for something a bit sturdier, but I'm not, so it's sufficiently tough.

The combination of instant downtuning and octave/octaver makes this an impressive piece of equipment, especially considering the price.

Currently I've been running this through guitar rig 3 kontrol edition into 2x yamaha 50watt monitors. I am also using it in front of a 5150 mk2. My main guitar is my black 2004 esp mh-1000 with emg x series pickups. I am primarily a metal player. At this point it is running with no other effects pedals. The device is true bypass and is completely quiet in on & off mode. This pedal does track accurately and keeps in tune all the way down the full 3.5 steps, however it doesn't mean it's perfect. When engaging at a simple .5 step down (e.g. e standard to e flat) there is no significant difference or loss in sound quality but there is a loss, which in itself may be a huge bother to some. When you drop it down a full step the loss in 'clarity' and 'punch' becomes apparent. Your guitars tone becomes less focused or flat and the bass response becomes loose, as well as losing high end cut. The octave function is very good in both octave only mode, and octave and original sound mode. I've not much experience beyond the Boss octaver and octave function on my Digitech Whammy, but this one is better than both of them in tracking. Personally, beyond 1-1.5 steps down the pedal sucks all the tone out of your current EQ setting and you have to re-adjust and add a bit more gain in order to retain something similar (not exact) to your original un-effected tone. I have my tone/EQ and I don't plan on having to mess around with it for the sake of this pedal.
Reliability/Durability:
It looks and feels solid as any other high quality pedals on the market so I'd imagine this would hold up on the road.
Ease of Use:
Very simple setup. -On/Off button -Up octave/toggle switch - Sprung button so you can create staccato like pitch changes between original and dropped pitch, however you can't go up when the effect is engaged -Down octave - Can be used at any point -There is also a USB port for firmware upgrades

I wish I could say this thing is perfect and is the answer to having multiple guitars but it's simply not. I watched every video I could find before buying, unfortunately no local retailers had stock so I ordered it from interstate. At this point I am considering selling it because I am very particular about not having my rigs sound affected in a negative way and I don't really use octave settings. Sure, there are many raving reviews and support for this pedal from great artists, so as with any piece of equipment it all comes down to personal choice. For some, the quality of the octave and the toggle function will be enough to justify the purchase, but as a guitarist looking to have more options from a single guitar without losing tone it just doesn't cut it. I suggest you get out and try it before you buy.

It did work but again I did not like the fact that it killed all tone and sustain.Very disappointed in this product i was hoping for much more
Reliability/Durability:
Did not have it long enough.Returned it within a few days of using it.
Ease of Use:
Well technically it works but how well, for me not so good.It did drop your tuning but it seemed to round off all top end and kill sustain in my setup. I even tried it straight into my amp(marshall tsl 100) and i did not like what it did to my tone.
Customer Support:
I phoned the company and inquired if it would somehow possible to run it stereo-was told I should just buy two.Too bad it didn't sound good I may have. The fellow I spoke to said he would ask other tech's ,never heard anything back from him- even the fact that he got no answers from other tech's but was showing a willingness for customer service.Didn't seem to really care
Overall Rating:
I would not recommend this unit unless you play metal with so much gain you would not notice anything

DropTune

Sound Quality:
The device is quiet and seems completely transparent when bypassed, so no complaints there. However, with the effect engaged there was a noticeable drop in the high-end which made my tone a bit dull. When I toggled the effect on and off, I could tell that my unaffected tone was definitely crisper and sharper. When tuned only 3 half-steps down, the lowest notes begin to sound a little muddy and warbly. As an octave pedal, the Droptune is superb though. Parker Fly Deluxe -> Droptune -> Marshall Valvestate 2000 (clean channel)
Reliability/Durability:
Only just gotten it, but it seems solid.
Ease of Use:
It's pretty easy to plug-and-play with this pedal. The only adjustment that needs to be made is the "trim". When this isn't set right you will get unintended dips and swells in volume and your attack will suffer greatly. I had to turn the trim near the max to eliminate the volume changes problem, but my attack still wasn't quite as good as it is with the Droptune bypassed.
Customer Support:
Haven't dealt with them yet.
Overall Rating:
I think that some people could get some mileage out of this pedal, but given the duller tone, "warbliness" and decrease in attack, I would not recommend it if you want to play lower all the time. It is not a good substitute for tuning down and adjusting your instrument accordingly.
