Best OD pedal

Review By:
Manolian on 4/19/10 2:31 AM
Reviewer Background:
Musician
Purchased From:
C&E pedals
Price:
$199.00 USD
Features:

4 controls, Girth,Drive,Lean, and Gain let you shape the OD ,and tone .Bright blue LED to indicate status.

Sound Quality:

This is the best sounding OD pedal I have ever used in over 40 years of playing electric guitar .

It allows me to achieve that elusive Eric Clapton with CREAM tone that I used to be able get back in 1969 with my '61 SG thru a silvertone amp with Jensen speakers ,and all the controls dimed.

Some OD pedals I have tried come close , but the FET Dream nails it. It sounds like a 60's Marshall with all the controls on 11.Before this I was using an Hermida Audio Zendrive, but the FET dream surpasses it.

Reliability/Durability:

High quality ,and solidly built ,seems like it will last thru wear, and tear for years to come.

Ease of Use:

Easily dial in any amount of OD you deisre, from clean boost to saturated rich harmonic dirt, and all in between.

Customer Support:

Every e-mail I  sent to them while patiently waiting for delivery was answered, promptly, and courteously.

Overall Rating:

10+

I use a C&E FET dream, Xotic AC+, Cmatmods Deeelay, Boss tu-2 tuner. Into a DR.Z Galaxie 2x10, with a 1x12 ext cab. I got this pedal a couple of weeks ago, and am still really impressed. Some people will say "this thing kills the zendrive" or "blows away the Ocd" the truth is it doesn't, But I prefer it to my zendrive, it has a slightly more organic sound, it doesn't color the tone. So my PRS's sound like PRS's and my strat's sond like strats.
Reliability/Durability:
Looks to be very well built
Ease of Use:
Very easy to use, no real expalanation needed
Customer Support:
I did contact the company because they were back ordered on these, and got a reply the same day. I found mine on ebay
Overall Rating:
I'm a professional musician, and a recording engineer. I've recorded just about every combination of guitar/amp/pedal out there. I have to say this pedal is going to be a hit. Great, smooth, organic overdrive, with a very useful, well designed, eq foot print. This is the best pedal I've heard for natuaral, medium gain overdrive. I love it! I play PRS's and strat's, DR Z amps, the only other overdive I use is an Xotic AC+

cepedals.com

$189.00 USD

What impressed me most was how the pedal responds (differently) at low volumes.  The nicest feature to me is that it seems to provide a level of sustain that other pedals can only achieve when their volume is ¿¿¿cranked¿¿¿.  I can¿¿¿t speak for other players but I think that is something everyone in my musical genre searches for ¿¿¿ i.e. the ability for notes to be held for periods of time at low-mid volumes. The other equally impressive feature is the ¿¿¿non-muddy¿¿¿ tones coming from every volume level.  This pedal remains clear allowing the sound and tone of individual notes / strings to come through.
Reliability/Durability:
No opinion, just got it!  Seems well made and uses high-quality components.
Ease of Use:
My first impression ?  WOW !!!  I should have ordered one of these ¿¿¿babies¿¿¿ a long, long time ago! I had a chance last night to plug it in and experiment for a while with 3 different Stratocasters(E. Clapton, J. Mayer and American Standard) and it sounded great and more importantly to me, different with all 3. I¿¿¿ve read the website through and through many times ( http://cepedals.com/products2.html ) but not being an ¿¿¿electrical¿¿¿ sort of guy the information didn¿¿¿t do much for me until I heard what I heard last night.  The ¿¿¿routing¿¿¿ and the controls available for that must be the difference.  The FET Dream seemed to make each guitar come to (it¿¿¿s own) life.  Out of these 3 guitars the American Standard is probably the ¿¿¿weakest¿¿¿ in terms of pick up volume and tone.  However, when plugged into the FET Dream it gives the player an opportunity to completely change that without compromising the original ¿¿¿voice¿¿¿ that this particular model has.  It seems like the FET Dream really likes single coil pick ups and wants to make them work the way they were designed to with a much higher powered system than I have.  My two rec room amps are a Fender Blues Jr. (special Sam Ash limited run edition) and a Marshall MG 30FX solid state.  Somewhere I read in one of the ¿¿¿blogs¿¿¿ where someone wrote that the FET Dream didn¿¿¿t respond as well to solid state amps.  I would beg to differ.
Customer Support:
Dealing with Mark & Brian is great, but I had an issue with the shipping.  CanadaPost was a week late on the guaranteed next business day service, and they didn't even have the package scanned into the system until the day before it arrived!  I wish there were more options for shipping.
Overall Rating:
So, as might be able to conclude (with me) as an owner of several other ¿¿¿boutique¿¿¿ pedals I¿¿¿m pretty ¿¿¿ticked¿¿¿ that I didn¿¿¿t have this pedal as my first ¿¿¿ because it likely would have been my last as well.  The only thing I can think of that is better than having the FET Dream is having 2 of them!!! So, in the very near future I will be ordering another and possibly 2 more ¿¿¿ 1 for me and 1 for a friend of mine who I know will be as blown away as I am.

like dealing with a close, trusted friend.

i like the fet dream enuf to keep it on all the time, tweaked for adding a tiny, subtle amount of 'human vocal hair' to the guitar's voice, even for fingerpicking jazz and rag time.  a twist of 2 knobs and it delivers an overdrive to my tube amps (8watt and 40watt) that's killer for blues 'n' rock, yet easy on the ears.  this is one of those rare pedals that you get exactly what you paid for, and does exactly what an od is s'posed to deliver.

When i first plugged into the pedal I played some blues licks. Recorded it. Played it back, and I was very impressed. So I thought, now I should see how it sounds on a jazzy kind of track. Using the FET as a clean boost. Gain on 3/10. This setting allows the pedal the chance to colour, and the amp to breath without hitting the tubes too hard. Once I finished playing and recorded the solo. I pressed play, closed my eyes and tried my very best to find something I didn¿¿¿t like about the sound. It did produce a fat piercing tone. Which is perfect for what I needed to set the mood for that specific tune. My favorite feature about this pedal has to be the clarity and note definition. Even when playing a busy six string chord. You will still be able to hear each and every note. Different amp. Different sound? I tried this pedal on two different amps.  Both are class A amps. Skyraider 15 by Mack amps, and a Black Heart little Giant. Both amps provide a different overall sound, and yet the pedal still showed its colours. Throughout the past years reviewing pedals and amps. I find myself asking the same question: ¿¿¿Is this a pedal friendly amp?¿¿¿  Well with the FET Dream pedal it was very different, I love the fact that I can use the pedal with different amps. I am a multi-amp kind of player. I use two to three different amps at any given time. Different amps for different songs. Thanks to the FET pedal I can use it with any amp that I choose at that moment and still have the pleasure of playing with a rich creamy tone.
Reliability/Durability:
Seems very well constructed and I don't anticipate any problems.
Ease of Use:
FET Dream.  ¿¿¿Now here is a pedal that has something to say.¿¿¿ Have you ever wondered how it will feel to have a pedal where you can truly feel free and the pedal doesn¿¿¿t hold you back from cutting loss? Well get ready to discover the FET Dream pedal by CE Pedals. The FET was designed with one thing in mind.  Allow the player the freedom to create any mood from blues, jazz, rock, funk or smooth jazz. All in one amazing little box. While testing the FET pedal. I thought it would be good to record my test. This way i can go back and listen to the way it sounds as a listener and not just as a player playing around with the pedal. Like I always say. ¿¿¿A good pedal will sound great right out of the box,¿¿¿ and on the FET, my favorite setting is: FLAT! Just the true sound of the pedal.
Customer Support:
Brian hand-delivered my pedal in Toronto... very friendly and I'm expecting great support!

Final words. It has been a week since I first plugged into the FET pedal. I am still as impressed and love playing with this amazing pedal. So if you are looking for that clear/creamy tone which doesn¿¿¿t mess your signal up, or you don¿¿¿t want to use eight pedals to achieve that type of tone... You owe it to yourself.
