Deltalab SC-1 Chorus

Review By:
Philfixit on 10/29/10 1:48 PM
Reviewer Background:
Purchased From:
Musician's Friend
Price:
$60.00 USD
Features:

Basic stereo chorus configuration: single input working as a power switch, two outputs, rate, depth, and level controls, pilot light (more later), old school switch, and aux. 9VDC input.

Sound Quality:

Not particularly "shimmery, but I didn't buy it to emulate a 12 string, just to add depth to my playing. It does this in spades! I've heard other units that sound "deeper", but no where near this price point. In bypass, can ascertain no discernable change in sound (TB!), and works well in the effects loop as well as on the board.

This thing does all that I ask of it, and is capable of more.

Reliability/Durability:

Nice hefty metal case, decent quality jacks, pots are silent when turning and appear to be of decent quality. FS is definate "old school" styling - which I like - and is durable as well. Addeded to this is a 5 year warranty. However, when I first received it, the nut holding the OUTPUT B jack was loose, so I tightened it. No big deal, but I shouldn't have had to.

Ease of Use:

Standard controls as compared to pretty much every other chorus - use is intuitive. Manual pretty basic, but what can you say? Three knobs and a switch. Most useful setting for me are variations on "everything from 10 - to - 2 O'clock".  LED blinks in time with rate of effect - kind of annoying if you just glance down to see if it's on and you don't happen to catch it "on". Constant "on" would be better, IMO. Also it's BRIGHT!!!

Customer Support:

Haven't needed to use them, and probobly won't need to.  Website could be better though.

Overall Rating:

Have to rate this fairly highly because of it's quality of build, and sound. It's attractive and looks like what I feel a stompbox should look like, not some refugee from a "Star Wars" movie.

The other effects I use are a mid - '70's Super Fuzz and a 27 year old Dunlop Cry Baby, into a Marshall 5210 and being fed by a PRS SE Tremonti. Everything's basic, primarily classic, and some downright old. The SC-1 fits in well.

playing thru a pro rev RI, JCM 900 and various strats and LPs and a G&L blues Boy. theres no noise, hiss or hum at all. The controls are very sensitive so going from like 10 oclock to 12 makes a nice diff on tone. it only took about 5 minutes to dial it in and I use all three controls perty much at 12 oclock once in a while bump up the depth to 2 occlock but thats about it.  the tone is great for the price and the quality is great as well and to have a TB pedal at this price is awesome. no it cant beat a $200 boutique pedal for qulaity but it can compete very close in tone to where if you A'B'd it you prob couldnt tell which one is on

Reliability/Durability:

Ive been playing 30 years and gig out 3 times a week semi pro. i rec this pedal to all my students and def would replace it if it were lost of stolen

Ease of Use:
Customer Support:

never had any issues in the year that i had it

Overall Rating:

play blues and classic rock and with the SC-1 you can nail the BADGE break almost as well as EC does it.

SC1 Stereo Chorus

I tried this a couple of places in my pedal chain. I use a Tech 21 Blonde Character Series as a clean amp sim. I also have a Hardwire Tube Overdrive (before) and a Hardwire reverb (after). I have an SG-style guitar with passive pickups. Putting the SC1 after the Tech21, before the reverb, resulted in a lot of hiss when engaged, as well as the clicking sound that corresponds with the blinking light that I'd read about. Putting it before the Tech 21 pedal worked pretty well, just a tiny bit of hiss. There was a slight reduction of bass when the pedal was engaged, but the chorus sound was nice. It wasn't until I removed the pedal that I realized how much tone it sucked. Since it's true bypass, I assumed the bypassed signal was pristine. But (in my subjective experience), having the pedal in the chain, engaged or not, resulted in a dulling of the signal, at least when it's before any buffered pedals or preamps. After I heard how much better I sounded with the pedal removed, I didn't put the SC1 back. I returned it.
Reliability/Durability:
Seemed heavy and solid, but kind of comically so. The case is obviously much heavier than it needs to be. I'm not sure how reliable the jacks and switch are--they seemed reasonably solid. The knobs/pots seemed smooth and did not the sound did click or drop out when turned.
Ease of Use:
It's pretty straightforward, more control than many other chorus pedals, but easy to understand. Rate, depth, and level all do what they say (level controls the blend of dry vs effect). The power light blinks at the speed set by the rate control. In theory, the blinking light is useful, in practice, it's just annoying. If the rate is set slow, you can't just glance at the pedalboard and see if it's engaged, as the light is off half the time. It doesn't fade in and out, just goes on and off.

I decided this unit is not for me. It might sound good with a different setup. The chorus sound itself was nice, with low noise and a pretty good level match between engaged and bypass (except for a little loss of low frequencies when engaged). But the dulling of my tone (bypassed or not) was not acceptable.

SC1 Stereo Chorus

I have tried this through a number of set-ups, with a TS-9 into a 50W plexi and with a Deltalab Tube Driver into a solid state Raven POS as well as into the FX loop of a Marshall reissue with the master volume gain fairly high, and I rarely use the FX loops. I went to a lot of trouble because of the disbelief over the price. This chorus is excellent. I had to force it to make noise using a single-coil stock Strat and an MT-2, and that's the only time that I heard the swirly noise that I've heard about from one source that seems to follow the indicator light. I really had to push it into unreasonable territory to get the crud, so I'm thinking that the other guy had another problem with proximity to his tube amp or some such thing. Results; this thing sounds great. I own a CE-2, and I like this more. I put it with a Fulltone DejaVibe mini, and this was much better, especially considering the price being less than .25 of the Fulltone unit. The SC-1 is an excellent value. It has a very nice sparkle and the rate doesn't thin out the tone of the guitar. With a Les Paul the SC-1 wasn't overcome by the thicker tone of the humbuckers, even in the neck pos. A Strat got even sweeter and yes, I got a very convincing Trower-esque tone, especially with a Fulltone RTO. The Digitech Hardwire chorus may have more variety, but I still found the tones in this tough little guy more useful all around.
Reliability/Durability:
The unit appears to be very well armored and fairly RPG-proof. Popping it open I can only speculate as to how someone finally made one of these at a price that fits the amount of material.
Ease of Use:
Very simple standard labeled controls, good heavy-duty footswitch, function-on light also gives a visual on the speed/rate. Heavy-duty metal box that will still be around with Keith and the cockroaches.
Customer Support:
I cannot imagine the circumstances under which this might suffer. These haven't been around long enough to wear out (yes, they do, and remember that when someone tries to get hi-$ from you for a "vintage" anything!), so... I'll give them a high mark for pre-emptive common sense.
Overall Rating:
I play anything style-wise on my contract. I am not asked to do much in the way of classical guitar, but pretty much the lot of the rest. For me, equipment is a tool box, whatever tool(s) I need for any particular given job, I apply. I put this lil' dude into my little room jam rig which is a TS-9, the SC-1 and whatever else is called for. I would replace this if anyone were foolish enough to steal from me. I constantly research gear. I am an "old pro", 40+ years. What I really love about it is the price/functionality ratio, it does a great job for a lot less in a day when I see way too many idiots doing the freakin' River Dance on a half-acre of stompboxes that seem to have become status symbols. I like this because it gets me a tone that inspires me to let slip the mortal bonds and simply play.

My amps are a 68' Bassman and a 65' Bandmaster both going through their own 65' Vibrolux 2x10 cabs.  My guitars are a G&L Commanche, Gibson Standard SG, and a Heritage 555.  To be honest I didn't get very far once I realized what was going on with the B output.  I tried several diffrent cords and even thried more units out to see if this was me or the unit itself.  It does have a nice chorus sound but not very deep but I wasn't going for deep.  I just wanted some light chousing for cords and finger picking.
Reliability/Durability:
n/a didin't have it for long
Ease of Use:
Three knobs is all there is, rate, depth, and effect level.  Easy to dial in a good mono patch. The manual isn't much but you don't need much.  I just wish it had expland that the B output only comes on when the effect is engaged.  Otherwise the dry signal is not sent.  That is a big bummer in my book.  This unit is only good for mono use.
Customer Support:
While I did email Delta Lab I didn't wait for a reply.  I emailed on late on a Friday and returned the pedal on Saturday.  So I have no comment
Overall Rating:
I have been playing for over 25 years and been through a ton of gear and never have I ran into this issue.  I would have kept the unit if I ran only one amp but I don't.  It did not fit my set up and for this I am giving it this middle of the road rating.
