It has the 3 controls, like the original unit, but they don't work the same way.

This effect doesn't go completely mad if you set MIX and DWELL to max. the original does.

Also, if I set TONE over 5 in my reverb unit it throws knives to my ears, this effect will take care of you.

Sound Quality:

Sounds amazing, I've tried other spring reverb effects and this one get's a lot closer to the original feeling.

Reliability/Durability:

Just bought it.

Ease of Use:

Very easy to use, the manual explains you the meaning of each pot very well.

Overall Rating:

The best choice if you want a versatile Surf Spring Reverb

As stated above, it doesn't have the lushness and seemingly endless decay of a Fender reverb-equipped amp but it does have a convincing spring reverb sound.  Its way too bright; I can't imagine why a player would turn that tone control up as it gets very harsh.  (Perhaps the original Fender unit also sounds like this but is not a good thing to emulate.) Compared to my vintage SuperReverb and DeuxeReverb it trails off far sooner. Overall, it is a quiet, good sounding very practical way to add convincing and fun-sounding spring reverb.
Reliability/Durability:
Boss pedals are very reliable
Ease of Use:
I liked the idea of a pedal spring reverb for my non-reverb old and new amps.  I currently use a Peavey valveverb tube rack-type true spring reverb (great sound but unwieldy especially if you don't use a rack). Years ago I tried a reissue Fender tube reverb but didn't think it sounded as good as a Fender reverb-equipped amp and it was as large and expensive as an amp head. The FRV1 has the same mix, dwell and tone controls as the original and while it doesn't sound as good as a Fender Deluxe or Super Reverb amp it does have a convincing spring reverb sound.  Couple that with its stomp box size and inexpensive price and you have a winner.

Never had a Boss pedal problem
Overall Rating:
Great inexpensive and practical spring reverb solution to non-reverb amps.

30 years of playing classic sounds! This is the real deal! for the Stones, BB King, Freddie King, Hubert Sumlin, Dick Dale, Beach Boys, Buck Owens, James Burton, Roy Bucahnan, "The Nashville sound" thing. No new gain sounds welcome here, sorry!I also would like to say, it's hard to beleive this thing is digital (very clean). Great job Boss!
Reliability/Durability:
It's Boss, I can't imagine any issues.
Ease of Use:
This is more than just a spring reverb pedal. It yeilds tone, gain & presence when dialed in w/amp eq correctly. To maximize it's full potential it will require someone to understand this, when they do it's an amzing addition to a so so amp, and even better for a great one.
Customer Support:
Sadly, I learned that mine had to come from Koria, because Boss questioned weather or not enough would be sold in the US. Get your's while you can! Too bad Boss doesn't know where I live, They could pay me a commission check for this endorsement!
Overall Rating:
I'm planing on picking up another one in the event Boss decides they're going to stop producing it.

I'm playing a gretsch tennesse rose and a guild S100 through a musicman RP100 amp. the amp itself has nice reverb but not quite enough for me. with the FRV-1 you have control over the length, brightness and intensity of the verb. nice rich sound. awesome for dub/reggae, blues, just about anything really.
Reliability/Durability:
it's a guitar pedal, you're supposed to step on the darn things!
Ease of Use:
it's only got 3 knobs. foolproof!

I play rock n' roll, blues, ska/dub/reggae. it can be used subtly or drastically. in my opinion it's the best reverb pedal out there (and newest). I had a EH holy grail. didn't love it. the sound was too bright and there was no parameter controls. it's great for festivals or situations where you're not sure what kind of amp/verb will be available. Finally an awesome stand alone reverb pedal! best verb pedal I've heard yet, hands down.

This pedal emulates the Fender spring reverb sound.  If you want other types of reverb sounds, look elsewhere. I plugged it into my Fender Twin Reverb amp so I could do a side-by-side comparison to the amp's reverb.   I could dial the pedal in to sound pretty much identical to the amp's reverb.  I think the amp's reverb sounded a little better, but I don't know how to express the difference.  Perhaps the amp's reverb was a little warmer?  I probably wouldn't notice the difference if I wasn't doing a side-by-side comparison. I actually bought it for use with my Marshall 6100LM amp that doesn't have reverb.  The Marshall has an effects loop that can be run as either a serial or parallel loop.  The pedal has a "honky" tone when used in the amp's parallel loop mode.  Perhaps when used in a parallel loop, I should turn the mix knob on the pedal all the way up to get a mostly wet sound and control the wet/dry mix on the amp instead.  So the problem may be user error, but I thought I'd mention it anyways. Caveats: - I've only owned the pedal for a day - I've haven't gigged with it yet - When I use reverb, I use very little unless I'm "surfing".

Easy to use. Three knobs: - Dwell controls the amount of signal sent to the "springs" - Tone controls the brightness - Mix controls the mix of the dry and reverberated signal at the output

I bought the pedal to use with my non-reverb Marshall.  I bought this reverb pedal over others because, to me, Fender reverb is the standard against which all others are measured.  But I'm beginning to think that it may not be a good match for the Marshall distortion sound.  I think I'll explore using other reverbs that aren't trying to emulate the spring reverb sound.
