Boss CE-2

Review By:
Elessar [Sly] on 10/20/11 10:36 AM
Reviewer Background:
11 Years guitar, gear obsessed, PC, Cubase, Logic.
Purchased From:
Ebay
Price:
GBP60.00 GBP
Features:

Simple but effective. Two knobs Rate and Deph. Just dial in until you get something you like.

Sound Quality:

I've had many chorus pedals but this is by far the best I've played. You can't get really whacky sounds from this pedal, so if thats what you are looking for this isn't the pedal for you. This is a very transparent chorus. Really nice rich sounds, and it's really easy to find likable settings quickly. I run it on 9v battery and it lasts for much longer than expected! You can get really subtle chorus to add on to your clean sound or turn the knobs right up to get a more experimental sound. Sounds great with distortion (because it's transparent). With the settings I use I can get a good sound with clean and distortion. Simple to use rich, suble sounds.

Reliability/Durability:

Not had any problems with it (or any other Boss pedals). Solid, nice knobs, and lasts ages one batteries.

Ease of Use:

VERY easy to use. Again, two knobs make it easy to dial in likable sounds quickly. Click on and off, couldn't be simpler for what it is.

Customer Support:

Never had to deal with Boss.

Overall Rating:

This is by far the best Chorus pedal I have played. I've owned many chorus pedals and this is the one for me. If I had the money to get CE-1 I would because thats meant to be the holy grail of Chorus pedals. This pedal is now discontinued so expect to pay anything from £60-£100 depending on who is selling. If you get an honest seller they wont try to sell it for more than it's worth. Lovely transparent, subtle sounds, two knobs. Simple but effective! This is worth having on your board and a great chorus pedal if you aren't sure if you want chorus or not, because it's not over the top!

CE-2 Chorus

I run my 335 semi-hollow guitar into an Ampeg GV-22, a 6L6 powered, 2x12 Gemini series amp.  The clean sounds are almost ethereal.  My biggest love for it in leads using my Russian Big Muff to get an even thicker and cutting sound.  The speed doesn't go high at all which I think is amazing.  The CE-1 was invented to simulate a Leslie but it's subsequent failure produced one of the most common effects in a guitarist's arsenal today.  The CE-2 throws that high speed rate out the window and realizes it's true calling.  The effect always sounds right at any setting. Anyone who says the green label, black label, silver/black screw trash sounds better than another model is hearing with their eyes.  A pal owns a black label CE--2 (I own a green) and it sounds the same.  He mentioned there's an internal trim pot that does something but there's nothing wrong with the way mine sounds so I don't bother.
Reliability/Durability:
Boss.
Ease of Use:
I have no issues getting a nice sound of it.  There are two knobs.  That's less than three!  No stereo output but I needed a nice mono chorus and this is one of the best money can buy.  I'd probably laugh if I ever read the manual.
Customer Support:
I suspect the Boss customer support department is in the factory helping the engineers make pedals.  That way no one will ever call.
Overall Rating:
I play what I like and this pedal works in any application chorus can be used.  For a used pedal that's nearly 30 years old it's nice for it to just work and work well.  These choruses go for the price of a brand new Boss chorus (which are inferior) and sound much better.

CE-2 Chorus

Great musical chorus, not noisy.
Reliability/Durability:
No worries there
Ease of Use:
Yes, easy to use... Main reason for posting this is to point out to anyone looking for a Boss CE-2 (they are expensive on eBay) that the CE-2B Bass Chorus is just as good with guitar as bass - the CE-2B was also made in Japan, has an absolutely identical chorus circuit - except with an extra knob to blend the amount of effect and straight signal. So the CE-2B is actually better! They really do sound the same - I have tried both side by side and hard to tell apart with the CE-2B blend knob cranked. The main difference is the CE-2B is usually around half the price.

Overall Rating:
Superb chorus, 8/10 for the CE-2 only because they cost so much on eBay - and 10/10 for the CE-2B because they don't.

CE-2 Chorus

I have several pedals on my board and the CE-2 sits well with all of them. I use vintage Fender and Vox amps in multi-amp set up with a 1960 Strat, I place the CE-2 after trem and before delay, I have the "Long Dash" MIJ one from 1980, supposedly these are the ones to have, but I hear any of them from this era are great. Awesome chorus with a slight boost, no tone coloration of guitar. I like it much better than the original CE-1.
Reliability/Durability:
100% reliable.
Ease of Use:
Very easy, try 10 and 2 setting.
Customer Support:
Never had to call.
Overall Rating:
Great sounding chorus, I would have to find another if this one was stolen, best chorus I have heard in 47 years of playing, very musical and rich, a must have for anyone who loves guitar effects.

CE-2 Chorus

I got the Long dash MIJ model made in 1980, the CE-2 is more under the R than the U. This is the more collectable one. I have the CE-1 and I like this one much better, it sounds just plane GREAT. You also get a nice bump in volume and mids when engaged. Lets the guitar tone come thru in spades, GREAT chorus and I thought nothing could beat the CH-1, this pedal is awesome.
Reliability/Durability:
Mine is 30 years old and looks brand new, Boss pedals are totally reliable, it has no problem with my other pedals, true by-pass or not.
Ease of Use:
Two Knobs-Easy as pie.
Customer Support:
No experience with them, but hear they are pretty good.
Overall Rating:
I play all kinds of music, 43 years now, it has no stereo outputs but still doesn't need them. Works well in my chain, looks cool and sounds great, if you want a great no frills chorus that sounds awesome, try one of these, can still be had for peanuts.
