DC9 Dynamics Compressor

Ebay
Price:
$21.95 USD

First of all, do not expect boutique sounds from this $29.95 (new) compressor. It will not give them to you. It will, however, give you good but gently compressed sounds with a slight boost in treble. This is especially useful on clean settings with both single coils and humbuckers. Chicken pickin' and funk rhythm sound very good with the DC9. However, if you are looking for super-squashed sounds, look elsewhere. Even with sustain maxed, the squash is not on par with more expensive units like the Dyna Comp or boutique compressors like those made by Keeley, CMATMODS, or Analogman. With distortion, it begins to hiss with sustain past 1 o' clock, which is where you'll find the sweet spot for the most usable amount of sustain with the lowest possible amount of noise. It performs as well as a sub-$30 compressor could I suppose.
Reliability/Durability:
Behringer effects are indeed inexpensive, but their low cost belies their reliability. I've owned several Behringer products over the past decade, and none of them has ever failed me.
Ease of Use:
This compressor has very basic controls much like the MXR Dyna Comp, just 2 knobs, one for LEVEL and the other for SUSTAIN. There is a trim pot inside the unit, but it appears to have been varnished to prevent adjustment.
Customer Support:
Because of the dependability of their products, I've never had to deal with them.
Overall Rating:
I have been playing for almost 32 years, and I have owned a ton of gear over the years including several compressors including the Boss CS-2, Dyna Comp. Rocktron Big Crush, Behringer CS100, and my latest compressor, the CMATMODS Ross Clone. I would recommend the DC9 for the country player, funk, or even jazz player, who is on a tight budget. The gentle compression on clean settings is actually quite good. If it were stolen, I would definitely buy another because of its excellent bang for the buck and reliability.

Tested it with a RBX 374, DC connected. It pushes up the higher notes but a turn of the EQ solved it, besides that...nothing to report, maybe a bit of noise with output regulated to max but that could be coming from everything, from my laptop to the transformer i was using.
Reliability/Durability:
I will be going to use it in an every day basis no doubt, the case is hard enough not to brake at the slightest distraction
Ease of Use:
It was easy to get an acceptable sound out of it but it takes a wile to really figure it out and set a good sound. The manual is pretty minimal but there isn't really much to explain. Changing battery is a unnecessarily hard task, the 7 is because of that Overall easy to use
Customer Support:
Never used it but the few contacts I had with the support team makes me expect the best of it.
Overall Rating:
Relation quality price is a BIG thumbs up for the DC9, if you are not a pro and/or you just don't have the money for something a lot better, this is the one to get.

Sounds great. I don't agree with others here about the Sensitivty knob giving more compression at lower settings. I dime my Sensitivity knob and have the Output on just over half and there is a good dose of squash going on. When the Sensitivty is set low the signal is harsher and less squashed - although some compression is still present. This unit doesn't suck your highs at all in fact it boosts them a bit and gives you a nice musical jangle. I use it for all my clean sounds now. It gives me a nice equalising effect bewteen double stops, triads, single notes and full chords. And it does country and funk riffs very well. I've tried it with distortion and it could be used as a lead booster or just to add some extra harmonic zing to your sound. I prefer for clean tones though as my distorted sounds has a healthy amount of natural compression anyway. The unit isn't a real true bypass but it's by no means a tone sucker. Overall a great sounding pedal for a low price.
Reliability/Durability:
This one is actually metal and seems like it will last. No worries here!!
Ease of Use:
2 knobs - Output & Sensitivity. Easy just plug in play. I don't use batteries so acces is no issue for me.

I need compression for my playing style but most units are very overpriced for such a subtle effect. This unit delivers usable sounds at a very low cost to the buyer. This is the 2nd Behringer pedal I've bought and I'm very suprised by how good they actually are. I'd consider buying other Behringer products in the future based on my recent experiences. This is a great compressor and I'm very happy with it - it's almost never off when I play clean parts.

I again agree with the previous review - don't know how this has not been mentioned by the other reviewers. It is virtually noiseless, but robs low frequencies, resulting in a tight and punchy, sparkly sound, good for funk. I like it, but it is by no means trasnparent or neutral.
Reliability/Durability:
Seems well made.
Ease of Use:
Easy, but I completely agree with the previous review by Giorgio - the sensitivity knob works in the opposite way as described in the manual. So -1 for the manual. And another -1 for difficult access to the battery compartment - you have to remove four screws and open the whole thing. I use it with an adaptor anyway.

Overall Rating:
It is a nice compressor, it is useful to actually change the tone of the guitar a little bit, for variation. It adds treble and removes bass but it has a nice musicality. Look elsewhere if you want a permanent compression that leaves your tone intact. I have an EBS multicomp and that one is far more neutral, although it has less "soul" as well. For the price, a nice device to try out if you're into compressors.
