Certainly a nice improvement, with the switch down the pedal is in standard mode but now seems to sound more open and less muddy, still lots of bass though so its not tinny. Flick the switch up and the gain opens right up, probably less actualy distortion but lots more natural crunch with slightly less bass in the overdrive, I like this setting the most.
Reliability/Durability:
Everything seems just as solida as before I sent it, only had it back a couple of days so we'll have to wait and see
Ease of Use:
Easy but mine is apparently the new MK3 version (September 2008) and has a toggle switch to change the overdrive tone, the rest of the pedal is in standard Boss spec but with all uprated components, including a Burrbrown(?) which is supposed to help tame noise. Easy to get a nice tone from the pedal, its not complicated at all!
Customer Support:
Outstanding, did everything I asked (such as a sexy magenta LED) and way quicker than I was expecting. Responded to all questions within minutes.
Overall Rating:
Been playing for 30 years, mainly 'classic' rock and some old Maiden. The OD3 has been sat doing nothing for about 4 of those years, I thought I'd take another look at the OD-3 with the intention of cleaning it up to sell on ebay, then I discovered pedalmods.com and was amazed that they were in the UK, and not in the USA like all the other respectable modders. The prices were too cheap to be real so I think I'll get my CS3 done, another of the Boss pedals I really dont use as I cant get on with.

Boss OD-3

e-Bay/Pedalmods
Price:
$55.00 USD

This is the overdrive pedal that Boss nearly got right (just like Ibanez with the TS9DX)but the stock version is a bit muddy and lacks transparency. The Pedalmods version improves many of the internal components (e.g. Chris will use a metal film cap that costs 50p to replace the one Boss fits which costs 1p)including a Burr Brown op-amp. The effect is a marked improvement in tone and transparency over the stock pedal. This is still a very muscular sounding overdrive, ideal for big, beefy chord work but now you can pick the notes in a chord and hear them clearly without them sounding mushy and indistinct. The modded OD-3 cleans up well from the guitar too and adds a good level of boost, if required.
Reliability/Durability:
It's a Boss pedal modded by Pedalmods - I can't think of anything more reliable.
Ease of Use:
Outwardly, there's no change to the standard Boss pedal - i.e. no additional knobs or switches - so the modded pedal is just as easy to use as the standard one - it just sounds lots better.
Customer Support:
Pedalmods are the best for customer support. Chris is always happy to answer any questions by e-mail - even really trivial stuff. I have quite a few of his modded pedals and none of them have ever given me any trouble.
Overall Rating:
I play classic rock, blues, prog rock and some 60's pop and soul occasional (I've been doing some deps lately)using a mixture of Gibson, Heritage, Yamaha and Epiphone Elite/Elitist guitars with Trace Elliot, Laney, Orange and Crate amps (depending on the gig). I've tried the OD-3 with most of my set ups and it just sounds great - so much better than a stock Boss pedal and different enough from an SD-1 or a Tubescreamer to justify having it. I've been playing for almost 38 years now and I think I know a good tone when I hear one. Great pedal. If you have one, it's definitely worth getting it modded. If you don't and you're looking for a good overdrive, try and find a cheap one on e-Bay and get that modded - you won't regret it. N.B. Price quoted is for s/h cost of pedal and the the cost of the mod.
