Boss CE-2 Hi-Fi and Speedy Mod

E-Bay
Price:
$160.00 USD

Sound Quality:
This thing sounds just AWESOME for a mono chorus. For comparison, I purchased this for my small pedalboard, but on my big board I use a fully loaded Analogman chorus (deep switch, stereo, trim knob). I've also owned or used the Retro-Sonic Chorus Ensemble, Redwitch Chorus, Vintage Ibanez or other pedals, TC, and a bunch of others. In terms of a mono chorus, the Keeley modded CE-2 easily holds it's own with the best of them. Lush, ethereal, at once both deep and warm, and the way chorus was meant to be. If you use a mono setup, this is the bees knees.
Reliability/Durability:
Boss pedal with Keeley HIGH quality mods, about 26 years old and still going. Enough said.
Ease of Use:
If you are reading this, you probably already know what it is. Boss CE-2 from the 80's, 2 knobs, mono chorus, doesn't get easier. Only giving it a 9 because the speedy mod requires you to dial the speed setting back further than I'm used to in order to tame the chorus. For example, a moderate tempo chorus is dialed to 9:00 rather than 11:30-12:30. Not a problem, but looks kinda of different on the board.
Customer Support:
Keeley team will always help you out, no worries.
Overall Rating:
I've been playing for over 30 years, still gig regularly, and play many styles from rock, new rock, funk, country, a dash of jazz, and other contemporary, radio-friendly stuff. This pedal will take you anywhere from Andy Summers and The Edge to Black Sabbath and Metallica (clean tones), and anywhere else you need chorus. This works amazingly well with single coils and humbuckers, and into the front end of a quality tube amps takes you to that place only chorus can. In short, the more I play it, the more I like it. I picked it up for a fair price on e-Bay, and it was WELL worth the money. If I happen upon another one, I just might buy it as an investment because these are becoming rarer every day. If you have a CE-2, send it to Robert Keeley and let him work his magic. Oh, and this goes without saying, but if at all possible DON'T remove the original serial number label off the back - attach it to your pedal board another way because even though modding reduces the value, removing the s/n label will drop it further. Protect that investment.

My current rig and order of effects = American Strat w/ vintage noiseless pu's -> Boss TU-2 Tuner -> Keeley Compressor -> Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive (Keeley Mod) -> Boss OS-2 (Indyguitarist Mod) -> Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi -> MXR Phase 90 (Script Mod) -> Boss CE-2 (Keeley Mod) -> Roland Cube 30 (usually set to the Roland JC-120 setting). This is a very good pedal (a classic) in its stock form, but Robert makes definite improvements. In addition to improving tone by replacing cheaper components with ones that sound better, he also changes the speed function to allow for a much faster rate. I love the chorus sounds of Andy Sommers, John Frusciante, etc. This pedal allows me to get very close to these sounds (I think both of the aforementioned players use the Boss CE-1). Robert takes a very good, classic pedal and improves it even more.
Reliability/Durability:
It's a Boss compact pedal. Good luck trying to tear it up! I would (and do) gig without a backup, without a problem, and without a worry.
Ease of Use:
Very Simple Boss compact pedal design with two knobs: Speed and Intensity. Very easy to get a good sound out of it.
Customer Support:
Robert Keeley is well-known for his outstanding customer service, and for good reason.
Overall Rating:
I play Christian Rock, Rock, Blues, Alternative/Grunge, Punk. I have been playing for 20 years. For me, there are the Boss CE-1 and CE-2, and The Electro Harmonix Small Clone; and then there are the "other" chorus pedals. I would definitely buy another one if it was stolen or lost. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that it only comes in "Carolina Blue" (I am an N.C. State Graduate).
