Now this is where the pedal shines. What the mod does is completely remove the "buzz saw" effect of the pedal. BOSS should really change the name of the pedal to "Bass Distortion." Mark removes 90% of the distortion but adds 110% of tone in it's place. The result is far, far improved sound, especially in the low end. You can dial in a nice, gritty, rumbly tone. The beauty is when as you increase the overdrive, you don't lose the tone. I tried it both through my Peavey T-40 & EB Music Man HH. Sounds great through both. Now overdrive pedal can be considered quiet, but this mod takes out a lot of the noise, especially the high end mosquito buzz.
Reliability/Durability:
It's a BOSS, which makes it pretty much indestructible. But BOSS only has a five year warranty. Mark warranties the pedal for life afterward.
Ease of Use:
The first time I got my pedal back, I thought there was something wrong with the pedal. I sent it back and he tweaked it a bit more. NOW I understand what the modification does. It takes a bit of fiddling to find a good sound, but when you do.....
Customer Support:
Traded a lot of e-mails with Mark. He's a great guy and willing to listen to criticism and questions. If you don't like what he did, he'll fix it.
Overall Rating:
I've been playing 20+ years. Mostly punk/hard rock. Don't expect this pedal to sound anything like it's original incarnation. But once you understand how it's supposed to sound, the epiphany will begin. I've tried it up against my Sansamp BBDI, and this mod still blows it out of the water. It it were stolen, I'd find a used stock version cheaply and send it in to be modded!

Sent him a new pedal and he modified it.

I play a fender P-bass through a Humphrey Audio "Atom smasher" and now through the Humphrey Audio ODB-3 bass overdrive pedal into an Ampeg SVT-III pro head with a 1 x 15/2 x 10 cabinet(s)or sometimes a Fender Bassman 20 or 250/210, depending on the size of the gig.  I am trying to get my old sound which was the Ampeg SVT-II "all tube head" through an Ampeg 8 x 10 cabinet, from a pedal...yes I know and quit laughing!  It's not the same but is as close as I have gotten, and this has been a process of over a couple of years of borrowing and trying out numerous pieces of gear. His mods have made this a true overdrive pedal and not a distortion pedal.
Reliability/Durability:
I have not had this pedal very long.  I am 100% confident that Humphrey Audio would be more than helpful if any problems would occur.
Ease of Use:
Easy to use and easy to get a good workable "overdriven" tone out of it.The blend knob is the key to pulling everything together.
Customer Support:
This guy is fantastic to deal with!  He has answered numerous question from me, usually the same day or night.  He is very friendly, helpful, and professional!  He exceeded my expectations already.
Overall Rating:
I am a rock player who plays in a weekend cover band, an all instrumental band, as well as some solo bass work.  I was so impressed with my Humphrey Audio "Atom Smasher" I sent him a Boss ODB-3 Bass Overdrive pedal to modify.  My goal is to get that overdriven cranked up Ampeg SVT-II tone...in a pedal, stop it!  The only way to do that is to buy an Ampeg SVT-II head and crank it up, work the tubes, and run it through an 8 x 10 cabinet...it's not going to happen in a pedal!  With that said...this pedal is as close as I have gotten.  I have tried numerous pedals, rackmount gear, digital pod things, etc...I have down sized my rig over the years, with age comes the idea of lighter and less gear!  I have played through the Ampeg SVT-II head with an 8 x 10 cabinet and the Ampeg SVT-III pro head through two 4 x 10 DL cabinets.  My goal is to get "close" to that sound in a smaller set up.  The ODB-3 has helped me do just that. the original Boss ODB-3 pedal is more of a distortion pedal than an overdrive pedal. It's not bad, just not great.  What ever "mods" were done to it made it more versital, and sound more like an overdriven amp, which was my goal.  I am once again very happy with my "2nd" Humphrey Audio pedal.  I'm  giving the pedal an 8.  I would put the Ampeg SVT-II head (cranked up...which I did many of times), through an 8 x 10 cabinet a 10.  This pedal will get you close.  You don't have to re-tube it (a $400 dollar expense)is very light, and sounds good through any number of combinations of bass amps! Hope this can be of some help.
