Ok guitar but overpriced

$845.00 USD

The Guitar is advertised all over the web as being built by a master luthier Denny Zager, equivilent in quality and sound to major brands costing several thousand, and with a revolutionary set-up based on "String Science", also called the "EZ Play" system.

EZ Play is the guitar's major claim. In fact the EZ Play set up is said to be so low that it is unlike any other guitar, and that the tone/volume is enhanced by other modifications that Denny makes to the bracing.

Action, Fit, & Finish:

The set up is indeed low. Not only is the action low, the frets have filed down (but not crowned!). It is without a doubt the easiest fuitar to fret that I have ever owned. BUT - the low action causes other problems. It is fine to have such low strings if you are finger picking or lightly strumming, but if you play with a pick, or attempt to get more volume by strumming harder, the buzz is terrible.

I tried mine in a bluegrass jam setting and it sounded terrible. The lows were non-existant compared to the other guitars and there was no volume. The buzzing was terrible. Normally, you could adjust the guitar for your playing style by putting on heavier gauge string (Gains volume and bass), but not with a Zager! Your warranty is void if you put heavier strings on it, probably because the bracing has been reduced in an attempt to salvage some of the sound quality and volume.

The Frets are also problematic. The frets have been filed down to a point that there is nothing left for future fret work. For the type of playing I do (Blues. Bluegrass. Folk, Jazz. Roots music. Gospel, it is not suitable.

Sound Quality:

Very anemic. Not bad for finger picking alone in the living room, but is completely "lost in the mix" when playing with other instruments. There is little low end response because of the extra light strings. Bass comes from the ability of the string to "drive" the top, and make it vibrate at the bass frequencies. Extra light strings just don't have the oomph needed to drive the top. The reduced bracing must help (I would hate to hear the guitar before the braces were reduced) but it is insufficient to regain the tone that was lost by the decision to use extra light strings.

The guitar is finished in thick, tone killing polyureathane instead of the nitrocellulose used by better gutar makers. In this price range it is to be expected. but with all the hyped advertising about the guitar comparing favorably, or even superior, to high-end guiatrs costing thousands, I was hoping to see the better finish.

Other than the set up, this appears to be the same as any Pacific-Rim Asian guitars that are on the market in the $200 - $400 price range.

The sound is similar to an old EKO that I picked up at a gargae sale a couple of years ago. Thin and unimpressive.

Reliability/Durability:

No problems here.

Ease of Use:

For someone, this may be ok, but for me to use the guitar, I would have to treat as an instrument that has been damaged by some terrible accident that destroyed both the frets and the bracing - and have it restored to the standards that accepted throughout the world for proper guitar craftsmanship.

Having the frets replaced and the braces redone on this guitar is like having an engine replaced on a $500 beater car. Yeah, you could do it, but the cost of the repair far exceeds the value of the car and just dioesn't make sense.

Customer Support:

Pays shipping both ways. Takes the guitar back without question.

Overall Rating:

This guitar is not q good value. The target audience is new players who lack the knowledge and expertise to realize that the so-called "String Science" violates the integrity of the guitar. There is nothing unique about the Zager which makes it inherently easy to play, it is simply an Asian import guitar that has had a technician (Luthier) set the guitar up for extra light strings and shave the braces to thicknesses that are unsafe with regular gauge strings.

Any guitar can be made to play exactly like a Zager by simply taking to a skilled guitar tech (luthier) and requesting the same mods. Depending on the part of the country you live in, this is going to run between $50 and $100. The math is easy - you can get a good Asian import and have it set-up and be Hundreds of dollars ahead!

The advertising hype is hard to swallow on this guitar. Reminds me of several sayings: "if its too good to be true, it probably is", and "Theres a sucker born every minute" come to mind.

So if you just want to buy a guitar with the lightest and lowest strings possibe, and don't care about the limitations caused by the alterations, then this is the guitar for you. But if you want a better sounding guitar, at a lower cost, and without limitations, then buy one of the many excellent bargains from Asia and have a Luthier set it up for the lowest possible action with extra light strings (Without changing the bracing or frets!). You will be able to revert back when you decide that you want more tone from your guitar, and you will be money ahead!

Poor guitar for the money

"EZPlay" guitar. Specially modified to play easy. Zager said his "String Science" is patented. Baloney! It'a Chinese laminate piece of junk!

Action, Fit, & Finish:

It'a Chinese laminate piece of junk!

Sound Quality:

It's a dreadnought, but it sounds like a toy uke.

Reliability/Durability:

It's a laminate. It will look, play, and sound just as bad a hundred years as it does now.

Ease of Use:

Strings BUZZ if you use anything other than the supplied thin picks.

Customer Support:

I put some medium strings on it to try to get some sound out of it, and it did help, but the nut was cut wrong for them. I called Zager, and he said I voided my warranty by putting those strings on. This is quality???

Overall Rating:

Worst guitar experience of my life. I sold the thing for three hundred bucks. NEVER AGAIN!

Big Disappointment

Review By:
FretFiend. on 12/11/10 3:32 PM
Reviewer Background:
Amateur guitarist. Playing Coffee houses and recording on Youtube.
Purchased From:
Zager guitars website
Price:
$845.00 USD
Features:

Advertised as "EZ Play", based on "String Science". Advertised as easier   to play than other guitars. Advertised as sounding better than other   guitars. Supposed to be personally set up by Denny Zager to his "unique" standards.

Action, Fit, & Finish:

Top was reasonably well bookmatched, but had a lot of runout. The finish was the typical thick poly found on Pacific rim guitars. Acceptable quality tuners. Plastic or Tusq nut and intonated saddle.

The frets were filed down to almost nothing, and were not properly crowned. There was almost no neck relief. The  action was extremely low. If you hit a string hard, it buzzed   badly.  Comes with extra light strings.  Zager said the   warranty if void if you put anything heavier than lights  on it.

Sound Quality:

Very thin weak sound for a dreadnought. Totally unacceptable.

Reliability/Durability:

I didn't keep it long enough to really assess this, but I would expect it to hold up as well as a Pacific rim guitar would. Reasonably good.

Ease of Use:

String spacing feels unnatural. I kept pushing the first and sixth strings off the edge of the fretboard. Not really "EZ Play."

Customer Support:

When I called and said I wanted to return it, they took it back, no questions asked. Even paid the shipping both ways. No problems there.

Overall Rating:

If the frets and the action weren't so screwed up, I might compare it with a Samick and maybe give it a three or four. As it is, it was poor. Very disappointing.

ZAD-80

$84,595.00 USD

I am scoring this and all the rest based on the guitar I received and the price paid in hopes of making it most relevant. That is - I don't know if anyone makes $30,000 acoustic guitars, but if so, I assume mine would pale by comparison, but then that would not be a relevant assessment. I purchased it new about 1 month ago. Basically, upon receipt of the guitar, I thought it was just a flat out beautiful guitar. Seems to be modeled after the Martin D-35 The guitar has a cedar top and rosewood sides and back. For full listing of features and other info I would suggest you just go to the Zager site (www.zagerguitar.com).
Action, Fit, & Finish:
Loved the set up. I had wanted to learn guitar for years and finally had the time so picked up a very old and very inexpensive guitar that was painful to play - just could not play bar chords or anything for very long without my fingers feeling ripped apart. That is actually how I came upon the Zager guitar - I Googled for "easiest playing acoustic guitar" or something like that and ended up finding the Zager site. When I got the guitar it was like a sigh of relief, feeling "I can actually play this thing". Everything else (routed bridge, misaligned bracing, etc.) is really beyond my knowlege to assess but all looked good to me.
Sound Quality:
I am a novice guitar player so really do not have a wealth of knowledge on which to base an assessment, however it sounded great to me and upon playing with a friend of mine (who owns a 35 year old Martin D-35), he played it and said it looked gorgous and felt the sound was actually better than his Martin.
Reliability/Durability:
Really have no way to assess this. Ask me in a few years.
Ease of Use:
Customer Support:
I give a 10 on this purely from the standpoint that they have a lifetime money back guarantee on the guitar so I guess you can't do much better for a warranty. Also, Dennis - the son of Denny who makes the guitars - is the guy you deal with and he has been very helpful and responsive. Never had to get it repaired so have no comment on that.
Overall Rating:
My friend who, unlike me, is knowledgeble about guitars, suggested that if you put the name Martin or Guild on top of the guitar, no one would question that you have a 3 or 4 thousand dollar guitar. So as I said at the outset, basing it on the guitar I received and the price I paid, I feel it is an outstanding value and would highly recommend.

ZAD-80

This acoustic guitar has a solid cedar top with rosewood back and sides.  It looks as good as any guitar four times its price with its abalone inlay around all edges of the face, sound hole, and fret board, in combination with gold plated "Grover" sealed tuning gears. Dreadnought size guitar with rosewood fretboard.  Hand filed frets make it very easy on the fingers.
Action, Fit, & Finish:
Here is where this Zager really shines.  The action is perfect!  I've spent hours in several music stores over several months playing all guitars from $700- $4000 and I can honestly say that my ZAD-80 is the best sounding and best playing guitar out of them all.  I found a few $3000- $4000 guitars that either sounded as good as or looked as good as my guitar but I haven't found one that could beat my guitar in both sound and playability.  The workmanship of this guitar is flawless.
Sound Quality:
This guitar has the most beautiful, deep, rich tone.  The guitar resonates and has great projection.  The sound easy fills every room that I play it in.  Its intonation is perfect and harmonics are a breeze on this guitar.
Reliability/Durability:
I've only had this guitar for 6 months, but I have bumped it several times and it hasn't affected the guitar one bit.  I also have a toddler that likes to help me play and my guitar has taken that abuse without skipping a beat.  Zager has a lifetime guarantee on all their guitars.  This thing is definitely built to last.  It tunes easily and always stays in tune.
Ease of Use:
Customer Support:
No "fine print" with Zager- they hold up to every claim they make.  One of the biggest reasons I decided to try this guitar was because of Zagers 100% money back guarantee.  I first ordered one of their guitars that had been discounted due to some marks on the guitar.  It played and sounded perfect but the marks on the guitar were too much for me so when I let them know that I wanted to return the guitar they emailed me a prepaid UPS shipping label.  And as soon as they received the guitar a 100% refund was issued immediately with no questions or problems (they even refunded my shipping charge!).  No other company does that!  Their customer service is hands down the best I have ever seen, anywhere!  When I purchased my first Zager guitar, I sent them an email with several questions at around 9pm and to my surprise I received a detailed response within 15 minutes!  Their knowledge about guitars has been invaluable to me even though I have played for over six years.
Overall Rating:
If you want a $4000 guitar for under $800 then a Zager ZAD-80 acoustic is the only way to go.  I also own a ZAD-50 CE, which I love so much that when I found out that Denny Zager was retiring from making guitars I quickly purchased my second Zager guitar.  This guitar is one of the best purchases I have ever made.  This guitar holds its own against $2000 - $4000 guitars in every category.  The thing that I love best about my guitar is the deep, rich tone and it's perfect action and playability.  Take my advice and buy a Zager, I bet you'll love your guitar every bit as much as I love mine.
