I use a Tokai Love Rock with Seymour Duncan humbuckers (Alnico II Pro and Screamin' Demon) and 11-gauge strings >>> Boss TU-2 tuner >>> (true-bypass-modded) Dunlop GCB-95 wah >>> Latraverse-modded Boss OS-2 overdrive-distortion (what this review is about) >>> Boss DD-6 delay >>> Fender Pro Junior The unit is noisy on high GAIN settings, but less than before, the reason being that the GAIN was reduced to give rise to more output LEVEL (master volume) instead. So the GAIN knob has less range but the LEVEL knob has more. This gave the unit a better use as a tubescreamer, since the GAIN range now varies from nearly nothing to moderately driven (it might have to do with the chip being replaced too). The effects are good at all settings. This is a major improvement. Especially regarding the COLOR knob. This feature was originally a blend potentiometer between separate overdrive and distortion circuits. Now the overdrive circuit is more creamy and the distortion circuit has more treble edge and bottom punch. The blend of the 2 is now more pleasing on the whole spectrum, and good compromise of a fuzz can also be dialed at high TONE, high GAIN and 75% distortion 25% overdrive. Talk about versatility. The drawback is that to get these nice moderate gain tones, the heavy ones had to be sacrificed. But this is a matter of taste. I wanted a versatile moderate drive pedal that produced a creamy overdrive with nice mids blended with a fuzzy distortion with cleaner and louder bass and more treble edge. I got it. -Summary of the mod's effect on the knobs' range and sound- LEVEL: more range TONE: more range GAIN: less range COLOR: overdrive - more mids, distortion - more clean bass and fuzzy highs, better blend, acts as an additional EQ (as it progressed from OD to DS, more bottom end is added, more fuzz and the mids get complemented by more highs) Before the mod - 3 Now - 9 By the way, it sounds better in old school setups (small tube amp, low-output pickups on resonant guitar) because of its moderate gain nature. 10 if it wasn't noisy, but that would require a noise filtering circuit...
Reliability/Durability:
I can depend on it. No need to be paranoid and carry a backup. Usually Boss make solid stuff. To top it off, I am 100% confident in Latraverse's work in the unit's electronics, so if he affected reliability, it was probably for the better. No need for backup. If ever it dies during a gig, I'll crank up the amp instead.
Ease of Use:
The Boss OS-2 was originally very easy to use. It still is after the mod. Each of the 4 knobs (LEVEL, TONE, GAIN, COLOR) has the same function as the pre-mod state. Actually, now it is more of a no-brainer since most settings sound good, so less screwing around with the unit and more time on the instrument.
Customer Support:
Latraverse is friendly and helpful. This was a custom mod. After he modded it, I went to pick it up and I asked for fine tuning (output, EQ, etc) and after 3 ajustments, it was ready to go. If I need anything else, I'd go see the guy again.
Overall Rating:
This is a good match for rock music, if heavy gain is not required. Think about the kind of overdrive and distortion on Led Zeppelin records. That's it. I'd buy one again and get the same mod done by the same guy. I'd also like to share that Latraverse did the true-bypass mod on my Dunlop GCB-95 wah and he also did various wiring and soldering jobs, circuit mods and other setups to my 2 electric guitars. Good job.
