I like the MD-2 to get sounds pointing at Rammstein and the NU-Metal kind of stuff. I`m using it with a Marshall all tube DSL 401 combo in front of the clean channel and an Epiphone Zack Wylde Custom Les Paul (camo version) with EMG 81 & 85 pick ups. So my sound review refers to that set up. The MD-2 sounded very powerfull but inside a mix the hights didn`t cut througfh and sounded a little bit too clinical IMO. The power of the sounds lacks inside a band context as well. The TONEHUNTER Rect. Mod just solves these problems. The basic character of the sound remained but it improved with a more transparent sound. The sound gained even more power and the MD-2 sounds more balanced and warm to me. It looses it`s sythetical touch. Excellent. The hights fir much better in now in terms to cut through and sound more natural. The bass gets tighter and sound much more natural as well. This pedal really makes the DSL 401 which usually proviedes a solid Rock Sound go really evil. Perfect combination. Very powerfull and strong sound compared to the fact that it is just a distortion pedal in front of a 1X12 combo. Best distortion pedal I have heard so fare for Metal type of stuff and I tested a lot of stuff the past years. The abillitys of a pedal is always limited compared to an amp so of course you can`t expect a Rock combo sound like a real Rectifier Top just cause of one pedal. In these terms this pedal with the TONEHUNTER MOD deserves a 10!!!!!!
Reliability/Durability:
Can`t say it but I guess it will last a long time it still is a Boss pedal. So no ratings in this category.
Ease of Use:
As easy as to use a regular Boss MD-2 --> this review is about the Tonehunter Mod and not the MD-2 itself but the rating in this category refers to the MD-2 itself
Customer Support:
Ralf Reichen (the guy behind Tonehunter) always replied to my mails within a few hours. I even got another pedal ¿¿with another mod and it didn`t sound quite as I wanted it so I sent it back and he adjusted it to my taste. After I got it back the other pedal  sounded just like I wanted it and I didn`t pay any extra. This guy rocks and customers are really treate like customers here. EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe Dunlop/MXR should learn from small companies like that. And the have to take good care cause the other Pedal was a Boss DS-1 with a Zack Wylde Mod. Sounds like an JCM 800 with an Overdrive in front it smokes the MXR Zack Wylde Overdrive. Once this pedal gets known in Germany I guess it will be tough to sell the MXR Signature Version.
Overall Rating:
The mod was not that cheap but worth every penny I paid. I have a great Metal distortion pedal and it feels so natural. I don`t like the modelling technology like Line6 stuff (I tried several times) cause I think it sounds very clinical and the feeling of playing is not too cool. For recording you get acceptable results and for live it completly suckls. A real tube amp and not even an expensive one is still ahead of that technology when it comes down to pure sound. A decent pedal with an excellent Mod is a great alternative to have a greater variety of sounds with just one amp. But you always get kicked in the balls as you play and you have a really good tone. It is much cheaper than owning three different expensive amps but you sound much better than with any modelling technology. Compared to that I give it a TEN. But that doesn`t mean it is the best sound possible cause a great amp always sounds best. I play for more than twenty years. I`m more into metal and Rock than into any other style. I`m a tone addicted but with gear where you don`t have to be a millionaire. I have been on two European tours but finally quit with professional ambitions so right now I consider my status of a solid amature.
