This is what matters...how does it SOUND. In a word...fantastic! I have been looking for a really good "traditional" octave pedal for a long time and tried a bunch including Zvex Octane, HBE UFO, Fulltone Ultimate Octave and Fuzz Octave, Foxrox Octron, Lovepedal Believe and a few others. This is by far the best one I have found for a bunch of reasons. First off, the number of variations in tone/effect you can get depending on the setting of the Drive knob, guitar volume, tone and pick up is astounding. It nails that classic Octavia sound and goes a lot further and with the Drive maxed out you get some really great fuzz. The fact that you can get a good octave and NOT have it all fuzzy is also really cool. The overall TONE of the pedal is wonderful and not piercing like many I have heard and you can really tailor the treble tonality with your guitar's tone control. Rolling back the volume on the guitar also provides a lot of variations and the pedal is very dynamic. The two other things that really set if apart are its ability to work well with other pedals and how incredibly QUIET it is...almost silent unless the Drive is maxed out and that is a LOT of gain. I use a Blackstone OD and it is THE most finicky pedal that hates to have other pedals in front of it except maybe for a really good germanium fuzz. The Octavious is the ONLY Octave pedal I have found that I can use in front of the Blackstone and have them get along even when I have the Red Channel on the Blackstone maxed out. I get this incredible composite, singing octave lead tone. The Octavious also works well with all my other fuzz and overdrives (Timmy, SunFace etc) and you can also put an OD or fuzz in FRONT of the Octavious and it works great too. Bottom line is the sound of the pedal is truly great, toneful and quiet and the best I have heard. BTW, the only other pedal I liked was the FoxRox Octron which is also a fabulous pedal, but a little less "classic" sounding for that Octavia upper octave.
Reliability/Durability:
Joe's build qiality is top notch, great components and attention tt detail. No concerns what so ever.
Ease of Use:
Two knobs, a footswitch and an LED. Ummm...if you can't figure it out you likely don't play guitar either! REALLY easy to use.
Customer Support:
Simply put as good as it gets; patient, responsive, friendly, realiable. A model for customer service!
Overall Rating:
Kind of said everything in the "Sound" catagory. This is a wonderful Octave pedal; organic, dynamic, quiet, responsive an toneful. It worgs great with other pedals and is a total gas to play. It comes in a small MXR size enclosure so it takes up little space, has an AC tap AND an On/Off switch in the Drive knob so you can keep it plugged in and turn it off and save battery life...smart! This pedal has ended my search for an octave pedal and is highly recommended. You should also check out Joe's "NuFuzz" if you a looking for a killer germanium Fuzz Face...also ended my search for a fuzz! Wonderful products all around.

i play through an american deluxe strat through a mark 3 boogie driven by a treble booster . slight reverb and that's it . this effect is way better than my electric smile at tracking . the electric smile is cool but to my ear it is more of a fuzz than an octave up effect . this effect especially beyond the 12th fret kills !
Reliability/Durability:
seems built to last like my beano
Ease of Use:
two knobs , left one turns it on and the right controls the amount of effect . no manual needed use your ears .
Customer Support:
joe the owner of the company is very quick to respond to emails , often the same day . he seems to really care about his products . a-1 guy .
Overall Rating:
i play classic rock mainly , and this is a great match for me . i have been playing for more than 25 years . i would search high and low for another one if lost or stolen . there is nothing i dislike about it . i have both this pedal and the addrock electric smile . in my opinion the addrock is a better fuzz maybe but the retroman is octave heaven . this pedal makes me want to solo .

Hi there, Just as a follow-up to my previous review, Joe at Retroman says he's been shipping these without rubber feet as a lot of guitarist end up velcroing their pedals straight down to a pedal board. However he says he's considering shipping out future units with the rubber feet included seperately, so you can stick them on yourself if you need to. Once again, great customer service from Retroman- highly recommended.

It's described as a clone of the Tychobrahe Octavia. It's a very nice octave-up fuzz, sounds best to my ears with the level at 2 - 3 oclock and the fuzz at 7 - 8 oclock. I play a Strat into a 60s Ampeg Reverberocket, with various noisemakers and delays. I think this would sound good with a Gibson style guitar too though. The whistle-like octave-up sound tracks very well when you select the neck pickup, and even better on Strat pickup positions 2 & 4 with the tone rolled off. This thing is excellent for lead guitar playing, no matter what pickup is selected- it will slice through the mix with an aggressive, authoritative tone that sustains and feeds back beautifully. Low single-note lines have this 'bloom' to them which can sound very synth-like. I love it. Just avoid using a clean tone with this pedal- it's proper place in the signal chain is before another overdrive stage, like your overdriven amp or a distortion pedal. For me, it goes 1st in my effects chain, before my wah. This pedal sounds really terrible going into a clean amp, and this will no doubt annoy some guitarists (not me)... True DPDT bypass. Tons of output.
Reliability/Durability:
Tough steel box, tough knobs and sockets, touch footswitch. Bright green LED so it won't go missing if the stage blacks out. Nice long battery life too. It's just slightly annoying that there's no rubber feet on the bottom of the box.
Ease of Use:
Two knobs: Volume & fuzz. Very, very easy. Instructions are there if you need them though. (A perfect '10' here would be just a footswitch on a box, I guess!)
Customer Support:
Prompt delivery, good communication, great value for money- Retroman were an absolute pleasure to deal with.
Overall Rating:
I needed a reliable octave-up fuzz that could do subtle tones as well as extreme tones, but which also had a stack of output to get some more gain for a lead guitar sound. I had tried other units but they either did not have the subtlety or the build quality I needed. If you've had similar troubles finding the right octave-up fuzz, you should definitely check out the Retroman product line.
