Compressor

This compressor stands out in a very crowded field of good compressors:  (1) very musical; (2) dead quiet, even when turned up; (3) versatile (not a one trick pony); (4) lots of headroom (can be used as a clean boost, so very effective in front of an overdrive).  The recovery switch allows the user to go from  a Barber TonePress transparent shimmer to a DynaComp squash without changing volume.  Stacks well with other pedals.  Good with HB and SC pickups.  Rock, jazz, country -- does it all.
Reliability/Durability:
Well built from quality components.  I've stomped down on the pots numerous times (I'm a klutz when reaching for the back row of my board) with no problems.  Can't say that about pedals with plastic parts and pots mounted on PCBs.  No backup necessary.
Ease of Use:
This is a well built, very refined Ross-type compressor.  No cute name or retro knobs -- says COMPRESSOR under the switch.  Two phone jacks, one 9v jack, one stomp switch, one LED, two knobs (sustain & volume), and a three position switch for recovery.  Controls are very responsive.  Like any good compressor, it is easy to dial in sweet tones.  Endless sustain available.
Customer Support:
I've exchanged emails with the maker.  A nice guy with high standards who cares about his work.  Very appreciative of his customers.  No hype or self promotion.  My pedal is lucky No. 13.  Never had a problem with the pedal, so can't comment on repairs.
Overall Rating:
This is not an inexpensive pedal, but after using it for several months, worth every cent.  It leads the pack as the best built, most musical compressor I've owned in 30 years (and I've owned or tried most of them -- MXR, Boss, Barber, Keeley, AM, etc., etc.).  I still keep an DA Orange Squeezer clone on my board for variety, but everything else is history.  If lost, you bet I would replace it.  I know, "Another useless all-10 review," but this pedal earns it.

This is a great sounding compressor!!! I bought it as a cheaper alternative to the Keeley comp I had planned on buying. The fellow who builds these pedal lives nearby, so I was able to try it out thoroughly before buying. I had the chance to briefly test a Keeley that belonged to customer at the guitar shop where I work. The Retro Sonic Compressor is every bit as good. It's quiet and VERY smooth sounding. Anyone who's tried out garbage like the BOSS CS-3 or MXR Dynacomp and decided that compressors aren't useful, should definetly check out this pedal! I use the Comp with my two Strats, mostly for clean playing. It works great for "hot country"-type leads (like Brent Mason) and for David Gilmour-type stuff.
Reliability/Durability:
Top notch components and workmanship. Good true-bypass switch and no crappy plastics jacks soldered directly to the PC board. Also has the world's brightest LED. It actually hurts your eyes if you look straight into it!!
Ease of Use:
Nothing to it. Just two knobs after all. Just set the volume and dial in the amount of compression you want.
Customer Support:
Tim Larwill is great to deal with. A nice fellow who knows how to build good pedals at a fair price.
Overall Rating:
I've had it about a month now and it's definetly a keeper. For those of you interested in a clean boost, check Retro-Sonic's "Boost" pedal, it sounds INCREDIBLE!!! That pedal is on my shopping list now!

the setup i'm using this pedal with is,tele>boss tu2 tuner>comp>fulltone fulldrive>ernie ball volume pedal>fender hot rod deluxe.Compared to the boss cs3 it is night and day the cs3 squashes the tone and kills the signature tone of the guitar you're playing, the retro-sonic is very transparent but you still get the effect.Compared to the mxr there is even more transparency,a better compression effect and 4 times more headroom on the level knob.mxr settings=Sat.4'oclock-Lev.3 o'clock. Retro-sonic settings=Sat.2o'clock-Lev.10o'clock.I leave it on all the time and also find it to be very quiet even with single coil pickups
Reliability/Durability:
this pedal looks and feels like it will give me a many years of hassle free service.I do and will continue to gig without a backup.Plus it does come with a two year warr.
Ease of Use:
the pedal is very easy to use it's just like the ross/dynacomp.Two buttons that's it.very easy to dial in and go.
Customer Support:
couldn't tell you.
Overall Rating:
I'm inthe process of upgrading my effects.this compressor is the best i've ever used and i really look forward to trying out thier other pedals.I just wish I would have come across thier pedals before I bought my fulltone fulldrive.(p.s watch out Mr.Keeley)

I use a hollowbody archtop, and a strat. With the Hollowbody: For an incredible full warm clean sound, the pedal is perfect, it compresses your levels just enough, and in terms of how subtle the compression is, you have to really sit there and listen for the it, because this is one of the smoothest. I own a Keeley and this pedal is as good, if not a little smoother. With the Strat: You can really achieve that "country picker" twang and compression, and again, it is a very smooth compression, so as not to squash the sound. I have used this pedal with a pile of old Fender amps which no doubt help the overall sound. Also Features True Bypass circuitry which is awesome
Reliability/Durability:
This unit is housed in the MXR style boxes, I haven't tried it yet but I'm sure you could throw it accross the room a few times and nothing would happen.
Ease of Use:
This unit features 2 control knobs like the Ross/MXR and you simply dial them in the way you like.
Customer Support:
These unit feature a 2 year warranty and if there are any problems the fellow has no problem helping out. A really great guy to have making pedals.
Overall Rating:
If you ever need and/or want a compressor, this is the one to get, I would deffinately buy another, that is, if something were to happen to mine.
