Waves has announced MaxxBass 101 and 102 bass enhancement hardware processors. MaxxBass is a patented psycho-acoustic bass extension technology that can augment the perceived frequency response of almost any audio system.

The MaxxBass process allows the generation of deeper, more natural sounding bass, while placing less stress on loudspeakers and amplifiers. Founded on the principle of the "Missing Fundamental," discovered by organ-builders in the early 18th century, MaxxBass generates a specific set of harmonics in response to the presence of bass signals. These harmonics give the impression of a significant bass extension without the drawbacks of simple EQ -- which can overload the amp and speakers -- or subharmonic generation, which can actually damage PA systems by presenting bass that the system cannot handle. MaxxBass actually reduces the stress on audio system components, at the same time compensating for speaker bass limitations.

MaxxBass 101 and 102 are the first hardware processors to offer the system. The MaxxBass 101 is a 1U rack-mounting unit with balanced line level (+4dBu)analog I/O on XLR and TRS connectors and terminal blocks. The MaxxBass 102 is a half-rack unit with RCA connectors operating at -10 dBV. Both the 101 and 102 offer stereo analog input and output, and controls are provided for input level, frequency, and intensity.A Lock button disables the controls after configuration is complete, with a hard-wired bypass control also included.
