Oxfordshire, UK (31 July 2015) – Origin Effects has introduced five brand-new compressor pedals. The Origin Compact Series fits the same discrete Class-A circuitry and peerless 1176-style FET compression found in the Cali76 and SlideRIG pedals into five compact stompboxes.

In two short years, the Cali76 and SlideRIG have gained an enviable reputation among discerning professional players. Accurately reproducing the tone and response of the legendary 1176 studio compressor, these large-format floor pedals deliver the kind of musical response, tonal transparency and extremely low noise previously unheard of in a guitar pedal.

The new Compact Series pedals stay true to the same design philosophy and no-compromise approach. While they are smaller and more affordable, these are not cut-down or simplified versions of Origin’s highly regarded effects – far from it. The new pedals retain the high-current, low-noise circuitry and discrete Class-A signal path of the originals, while adding a host of new features designed with the player in mind.

While the Cali76 Compact and SlideRIG Compact provide simpler, more intuitive controls that will allow guitarists to get to great tone quickly and easily, the Cali76 Compact Deluxe and SlideRIG Compact Deluxe actually expand on the feature set of the originals, adding a dry blend control for smooth and transparent parallel compression. Meanwhile, the Cali76 Compact Bass is the first Origin Effects pedal built specifically for bass players, with both parallel compression and sidechain high-pass filter controls built in.

The new range looks set to emulate the success of Origin’s original duo – legendary guitarist and compressor connoisseur David Gilmour has already purchased several prototype pedals from each stage in the Compact Series’ development.

The Compact Series pedals are available now from Origin Effects dealers worldwide and direct from www.origineffects.com.

Origin Effects Compact Series – Key Features

    Cali76 Compact (£199/$279/€295):

Designed to provide instant access to all of the most useful settings from the original Cali76 via a simplified set of controls. A single combined Attack/Release knob and a High/Low Ratio switch provide tons of flexibility without the complexity.

    Cali76 Compact Deluxe (£279/$379/€395):

All the functionality of the Cali76 Standard in a compact pedal, with an additional Dry Blend control for parallel compression. Explore the full range of tone-thickening compression settings via separate Attack, Release and Ratio controls, then blend your dry signal back in to preserve your natural playing dynamics. A three-colour jewel lamp provides simple and intuitive gain reduction metering.

    Cali76 Compact Bass (£279/$379/€395):

Designed specifically for bass, with Ratio and combined Attack/Release controls, Dry Blend for parallel compression and a variable-frequency high-pass filter in the compressor sidechain. The HPF control lets you dial back the amount of compression applied to the lowest frequencies, controlling slaps and pops while letting the low end breathe. A three-colour jewel lamp provides simple and intuitive gain reduction metering.

    SlideRIG Compact (£219/$299/€315):

The same cascaded 1176-style compression and clean, near-infinite sustain that slide players love, in a compact and easy-to-use format. A single Blend knob determines the balance between the single- and dual-stage compression circuits for complete control and flexibility.

    SlideRIG Compact Deluxe (£279/$379/€395):

Possibly the ultimate SlideRIG! Three-way parallel compression controls for dry signal level, single-stage compression level and dual-stage compression level mean you can create the perfect blend of sustain, transparency and dynamic integrity.

    All Compact Series pedals feature:

    • 100% Class-A discrete signal path
    • Classic, ultra fast “FET” response
    • Studio-grade discrete-transistor preamp
    • High-current, low-noise electronics
    • Ultra-wide frequency response
    • Ultra-high input impedance
    • Silent switching
    • High-quality “signal-conditioning” bypass mode
    • Premium components throughout
    • Advanced power supply filtering and protection
    • Flexible external power requirements (9-18V DC)
    • Designed and built in England

    Technical information:

In designing the Compact Series pedals, Origin Effects has gone to painstaking lengths to preserve the build quality and sonic integrity of the original Cali76 and SlideRIG circuits, even improving on them where possible.

The reduction in size has been achieved by using a mixture of traditional through-hole and SMD components, spread across a pair of densely populated, stacked boards. The signal path utilises film and tantalum capacitors, carefully chosen low-noise transistors and rugged MELF resistors (essentially traditional through-hole resistors without the leads), which offer low-noise performance and rock-solid reliability.

One of the reasons why the original Origin pedals sound so good is that they deliver true FET compression, with a fast yet highly musical response that is a world away from the brutal and unforgiving sound of traditional VCA compressor pedal designs. The new Compact Series pedals stay true to Origin's design philosophy with absolutely no opamps or VCAs used in the signal path.

The new pedals are powered by mains adaptor only. Dispensing with the usual internal 9V battery option allows more space inside the enclosure for high-quality circuitry, while also supporting the high-current circuit design that is the key to these pedals' astonishingly low noise levels.
