Sonic Studio LLC, makers of the Sonic Studio line of audio mastering workstations, announced their new family of products for DSD format mastering and SACD authoring. The three products, DSD.1, DSD.X, and SACD.1 allow facilities to tailor their investment in DSD/SACD technology to their particular workflow requirements.

DSD.1, consisting of an 8 channel processor card and the DSD version of Sonic Studio's application software, is a multichannel DSD-native assembly system. DSD.1 features 8 playback channels with crossfades or 16 without, through an 8 channel, SDIF-3 breakout cable.

DSD.X is an optional add-on processor board for the DSD.1, containing four Sony Oxford D-MAP DSD processing and mixing modules and the Sony Oxford SuperMAC 24 channel DSD interface. The DSD.X adds 8 additional channels (with cross fades) of DSD to the DSD.1 along with multichannel DSD-native EQ and dynamics processing. The DSD.1/DSD.X combination has a total channel count of 16 with crossfades.

SACD.1 is Sonic Studio's Scarlet Book layer authoring application for SACD. SACD.1 operates integral with the DSD.1 system software or stand-alone on its own Macintosh, allowing facilities to optimize their SACD workflow by separating the mastering and authoring functions. SACD.1 affords full preparation of an SACD image, from import of any compatible DSD-IFF files, through delivery of a final Scarlet Book layer on AIT or DLT tape. SACD.1 will work with any DSD-IFF files, not just those produced by the DSD.1.

Sonic Studio expects to ship DSD.1 and SACD.1 in the second quarter of this year. DSD.X will follow soon thereafter. Prices are to be determined.
