  • Radial Introduces PhazerBank™ Phase Adjustment Tool

    By Guest |

Radial Engineering Ltd. introduces PhazerBank™, a four channel analogue phase adjustment tool designed for live touring and studio to allow multiple sources such as two microphones to be phase-aligned in 'real time' to create richer and more realistic tones.

Radial President Peter Janis explains: "In 2008, we launched the Phazer. This stand-alone phase adjustment tool has been widely anticipated by audio engineers as it allows any two signals to be combined and then phase-adjusted so that they play in sync. For instance, if you have one microphone near and acoustic guitar and the other several meters away in the room, when the two are combined one will often encounter objectionable effects such as comb-filtering or accentuated frequencies that may sound strange. By adjusting the phase on the nearest source microphone, the two signal s can be brought together so that they sound more musical. The Phazer can be used on kick drum, top and bottom of a snare, and is particularly effective on electric guitar and bass, especially when combining a direct feed from a direct box with a microphone. You simply turn the Phazer's dial till you get the sound you want and presto! Instant Phat"

"Then, within days after we sent some Phazers out for tests, engineers immediately came back to us asking for more channels. Paul 'Pab' Boothroid (FOH with Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, AC/DC) was the first to suggest a multi-channel version and as such, we sent Pab the first PhazerBank which he is now using on the current AC/DC tour."

The PhazerBank is a 19" rackmount device that features four Phazers in a single unit. Each Phazer channel features pure class-A audio signal path with a variable phase control for 1°~180° adjustment and a polarity shift to address the 181°~360° range. This is augmented with a variable low pass filter that allows the engineer to focus the phase effect on low frequencies where it is most audible. Inputs and outputs are balanced +4dB or unbalanced -10dB. Usual connection is via the insert jack on a console channel strip.

Janis continues: "The PhazerBank is basically a sound engineer's toy. It is easy to use and a lot of fun. Once you start using the Phazer on one instrument, you will want to try on others. The PhazerBank provides a convenient rack-mountable solution that is ideal for the live engineer."
