  • Maven Peal Ships RG88 Channel Switching Amp Commemorating Atomic Veterans

    By Guest |

Maven Peal Instruments, Inc. is shipping the new RG88 channel switching guitar amplifier, commemorating U.S. Atomic Veterans with a donation for every amp sold.

The RG88 is the first two-channel guitar amplifier to offer power tube switching, Maven Peal's proprietary new Chime knob, along with the patented Sag knob for each channel. In addition, Maven Peal's money-saving BiaSmart system and Sag Circuit eliminate the need for a bias trip to the tech, a power conditioner and a line regulator.

David Zimmerman, Maven Peal's president and designer of the RG88, explains, "By incorporating as many customer ideas as possible, we came up with amp like no other. From tweed to modern, the RG88 delivers, at one watt up to 88.

Named after my Uncle Robert Gutekenst, the RG88 will also help raise money to help veterans afflicted by nuclear radiation while serving in the military. Uncle Bob and soldiers like him deserve the highest honor, respect and gratitude for their sacrifice for our freedom. To this end, we named the RG88 after Uncle Bob, and will donate $25 to the National Association of Atomic Veterans for every RG88 sold."

Based on a low-power tweed twin design, the RG88's two channels can be used with the same, or different flavor power tubes. The front panel's two sets of "Tubes 1&4" and "Tubes 2&3" switches allows you to select from two different sets of power tubes for each channel. BiaSmart allows you to measure and adjust the bias (idling) current in each individual output tube from the back panel, in seconds, without taking the amp apart (saving you $50 to $200 every time you bias). Because you bias each tube individually, you can use unmatched tubes with excellent results (saving you the expense of matched tubes).

Wattage control allows you to continuously adjust the actual number of watts the amp is producing, from one to 88. Wattage control is not a master volume control, power scaling or any other preamp technique-but actual control over the amp's power supply. Sag control allows you to adjust voltage sag, or power amp sag. Lower amounts of sag give the amp a harder feel and brighter, punchier sound, while higher amounts of sag fatten up/compress the sound and make the amp very touch responsive. The combination of the Sag and Wattage controls allows you to overdrive the power amp at whatever volume is appropriate for the venue you are in, allowing you to actually adjust the amp's headroom.

The Sag Circuit completely eliminates annoying power supply hum, reduces bleed-through during recording and regulates the wall voltage (saving you the expense of a power conditioner and line regulator).

The RG88 offers separate Chime, Bass, Middle, Treble and Sag controls for each channel. The back panel has (2) 4 ohm, (2) 8 ohm, (1) 16 ohm speaker jacks and a lineout.

The RG88 is made with audiophile quality components, two JJE34Ls, two Winged 6L6s and five Tungsol 12AX7s. Starting at $2,150, RG88s are available in black tolex heads, as well as naked pine and tolex 1x12 and 2x10 combos.

The Maven Peal Sag Circuit (patent numbers 5,635,872 and 5,909,145) takes MI amplifier technology into the 21st century by giving guitarists and bassists genuine control over the vintage sound and feel of power supply sag using today's components.

Maven Peal Instruments, Inc. uses nonlinear analysis (chaos theory) to design audio and musical instrument amplifiers.
