Education Events a Mainstay at AES 127th Convention

An enduring commitment to education has earned Audio Engineering Conventions a reputation for being not just student friendly, but student indispensable. Scheduled for Oct. 9-12 at NY's Javits Center, the 127th AES Convention will offer another outstanding program of Student Events. Convention Chair Dr. Agnieszka Roginska reports that, "Education Committee Chair, Alex Case; SDA Chair, North & Latin America, Teri Grossheim and our other Education Committee members have pooled their extensive resources to develop one of the most comprehensive programs in AES history. Student Delegate Assembly-1 Panelists: Teri Grossheim, Chair, and Meiling Loo, Vice-Chair, will introduce new events and election proceedings, announce candidates for the coming year's election for the North/Latin America Regions and finalists in the recording competition categories. Saturday, October 10, 11:00AM-1:00PM

Career/Job Fair: Students and professionals alike may visit with representatives from companies exhibiting at the show to learn about job and internship opportunities in the audio industry. Resumes requested. 1:00PM - 2:30PM

Studio Slave to Audio Professional, Internships and Jobs: Panelists David Bowles, Swineshead Productions LLC; Gary Gottlieb, Webster University; and John Krivit, New England Institute of Art. This workshop will address the students deepest concern, securing their first professional position. Whether internship or entry level job, the leap from school to pro world can be daunting. A Q&A will follow. 2:00PM - 4:00PM

Education Fair: Institutions offering studies in audio (from short courses to graduate degrees) will be represented in a "table top" session. Information on each school's respective programs will be available via displays and academic guidance. Admission is free and open to all convention attendees. 4:00PM - 7:00PM

Stereo Recording Competition-2* •Pop/Rock - Judges: Susan Rogers, Mark Rubel The top three finalists in each category present a short summary of their techniques and intentions, and play their project for all who attend. Meritorious awards will be presented later at the closing Student Delegate Assembly Meeting (SDA-2) on Monday afternoon. 2:00PM - 4:00PM

Mentoring Session: Following the opening SDA meeting, students may sign-up for individual appointments with a distinguished audio industry mentor. 4:00PM - 6:00PM

Education Forum Panel: Co-moderators Alex Case, University of Massachusetts, Lowell and John Krivit, New England Institute of Art - Brookline, MA educators and students are invited to join an open discussion on how we teach students about sound quality and high production standards when many graduates will not have the chance to work with the finest equipment and rooms. Continuing Education Options in Audio: Panelists: Alex Case, University of Massachusetts - Lowell; Terron Darby, Pro Media Training, NY; Elsa Lankford, Towson University - Baltimore; George Massenburg, Massenburg Design Works - Nashville; Konrad Strauss, Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University: The last 10 years have witnessed an explosion of new technology and a myriad of opportunities for audio service providers. However, as audio, video, and web-oriented media converge, audio professionals must learn new skills.
