Nominees have been announced in nine categories of Creative Achievement for the 25th Annual Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards®, to be presented Saturday, October 10 at the 127th Audio Engineering Society Convention in New York City. The TEC Awards®, presented by the Mix Foundation for Excellence in audio, is the most prestigious international forum for recognizing outstanding achievement in professional audio production and product design. The nine awards for Creative Achievement recognize the producers, engineers, mixers, sound designers, production facilities, and others behind hit recordings, concert tours, films, TV shows, video games, and other entertainment media. The awards for Technical Achievement in 16 categories of product design and innovation were announced previously. Production crews for James Taylor (last year's winner for Surround Sound Production,) are nominated for both Album Production (Covers) and Single or Track ("Wichita Lineman"), in addition to Television Sound for the PBS production of One Man Band. Also garnering three nominations are the production crews for Coldplay, tapped for Album and Single or Track for "Viva la Vida", as well as Tour Sound. The other nominees in Album Production field are David Byrne and Brian Eno (Everything That Happens Will Happen Today), Taylor Swift (Fearless), and Saxophone Summit (Seraphic Light). In the category of Studio Design, which seldom has more than one nominee based in the same city, three New York studios, their designers, and acousticians scored nominations. They include Downtown Music Studios, Germano Studios, and Great City Productions' Studio A. Odds On Recording of Las Vegas and Playback Recording Studios in Santa Barbara, CA complete the list. Interactive Entertainment Sound Production (sound for video games)—now one of the industry's most vibrant fields—is being recognized for the third year and will be sponsored again by G.A.N.G. (Game Audio Network Guild), the leading nonprofit sound developers' group. In the Television Sound category, in addition to the James Taylor Production, three Fox productions are nominated (American Idol, Fringe, and 24) as well as perennial nominee Saturday Night Live on NBC. "We're really looking forward to our 25th anniversary," said Hillel Resner, president of the Mix Foundation. "Not only are we returning to the city where the TEC Awards was born in 1985, but presenting the show at the AES Convention will provide great access to the world's top audio production talent—the individuals responsible for the technological genius behind today's entertainment." The TEC Awards will be held on the second evening of the 127th AES Convention and is expected to draw as many as 500 top sound and music professionals from around the world. Lead sponsors of the TEC Awards are Gibson Guitar, the nonprofit Gibson Foundation, Guitar Center Professional, and Shure, Inc. Other sponsors include Broadjam.com, Meyer Sound, Sterling Audio, and Universal Audio.
