In the 80's I was looking for a Martin but found that the sound that I heard other artists put out with their Martins, that I came to expect, didn't come from JUST ANY Martin, be it D-18 OR D-28. I went through a couple of music stores' Martins before happening upon the right Martin, and it came from one specific Shenandoah.... the "El Cheap-O" model, the "Japanese" model? It was a particular joy to hear this gorgeous sound coming from the Martin that was priced at about half of the D-28 (about $700). The snobby-elitists may scoff at this model, but the real bottom line is that my Shenandoah (the particular guitar that I have) will match the pricier models in sound quality AND play-ability. With ANY guitar, particularly acoustic guitars, what REALLY matters is, "Are you getting the sound and ease of play you really desire and deserve? Excellent points...bought a REAL D-28, after selling a very nice D-18 to finance it, and was extremely disappointed. Not all Martins are The Holy Grail (turns out that Guilds are, though!) Loaned it to my uncle, who likes it just fine, so, for all practical purposes, it's now "his" (I get it back when he passes on).
