  1. >> I'm a bit surprised that someone hasn't already wandered in and said something like "Guitars are just wood and wire they're just tools. Would I name my hammer?" That reply actually did come up on The Gear Page for this same thread. I didn't for a long time... it was always "the LP" or "the Tele" or "the 57 strat." A few months ago I decided to have some fun and out of the blue named my guitars after women in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (because I watched the whole series on Netflix all the way through). Dawn (my Suhr), Anya (my LP) and Willow (my Carvin). Bass is not named. Silly and corny, but it makes me smile. Not sure how long it'll stick before I go back to "the Les Paul" ...
  2. Might pay and sound nice, but I really dig the look of f-holes.
  3. Congrats on your boy (and gear), and welcome back! It's been a little slow, but not too bad. Pics of the Vigier?
  4. You might ask PRS what they think and see what they say.I'd do this.
  5. Yeah, there are lots of stupid threads. I wish there were fewer of those, but there are good ones, too. This is a forum for gear. If you want to improve your playing, to go the Lesson Loft. It's a great area, and very little BS.
  6. It's just entertainment. I think it's kind of neat, like watching a concert movie. Not as cool as the real live show, but fun in its own way. I'd love to have seen Jimi at the Fillmore East on New Years Eve, but I couldn't. Watching the show on video was cool, and seeing it with the band as a hologram would also be cool.
  7. Not really an instruction book, but I got a lot out of learning a bunch of jazz standards from the Real Book. They're standards for a reason. Lots of amazing melodies in there. You can hear (and see) how these great writers constructed their melodies and apply the same techniques to your own writing. It isn't a step-by-step thing, but then, neither is writing a great melody.
  8. I've been selling a bunch of guitars lately and it's taken a while for them to move. Nothing on craigslist has worked out - I did get a few trade offers. I ended up privately selling two to ebay bidders for a little less than my reserve price. Worked out because it was "enough" but a little short of what I'd hoped to get.
  9. Carvins. I saw one DC400 at Guitar Center a couple years ago, but the strings were rusty and the setup was so bad it was nearly unplayable. I'd like to try out a few Tom Andersons as well.
  10. Late to the thread, but EVH is fantastic. Not only was he a pioneer, he's a lot more melodic than a lot of his successors. You can hum his solos, and you remember them years later. He's a great rhythm player as well, and always has great tone. Can't speak to him as a person, but I love him as a guitar player and musician.
  11. Buy a budget amp and guitar. Trust me. I had my Ric and Fender Bassman stolen just because I was being stupid and showoffy. In retrospect, I deserved it.This. You just have to be very careful. I had a lot of stuff stolen in college, including a half stack. I was an idiot, though, and trusted people I should not have. Live and learn. There are all kinds of great headphone amp types of things - a Pod, the Waves iGTR (which I use now for silent practice), or get an interface for a computer and use an amp sim.
  12. Congrats, and HNLPD! Anyway, this thing is absolutely fantastic. I tried about 30 other Les Pauls at various stores around me, and needless to say, this one is the winnerI had the exact same experience (except mine is a cherry burst, not iced tea). I liked the particular one I bought more than even other Traditionals (that was probably mostly setup, though).
  13. Music is one of the things I do every day, like breathing and eating. I think a life without music wouldn't be a very happy life. Yep, Frank Zappa said it best: Without music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines or dates by which bills must be paid.
  14. Underrated: Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown (RIP) - wonderful mix of blues, jazz and country. Very unique player. Underrated: Nancy Wilson - 70s Heart is such an awesome band (I should probably say Howard Leese as well...) Overrated: Eric Johnson - great player, no doubt, but everyone talks about his tone with such awe, and honestly it's not even in my top 100. His performances at the Crossroads Festival shows were pretty ho-hum. Maybe I need to listen to him more, but he's never blown me away
  15. As far as "things I do besides work," yes, definitely. It's not my full time job (I'm a software developer), and with my first baby arriving last year I'm lucky to get half an hour a day to practice. I used to do a lot of gigs, but I just don't have time anymore. Baby and family comes first, work comes second, music comes third. Besides music I spend too much time playing old video games, and I try to read a lot.
