  1. And as for the notion that they aren't rugged enough for travel, it can't be all that fragile. The manufacturer brings one to the NAMM show every year and runs it on the show floor doing real work with it. With the appropriate shock prevention setup, I would think it could be made to work.Wow, I didn't know that! Thank you, Jim. +++.
  2. ha ha ha .. Classic case of faulty logic.. or lack of information about how things "Actually" work. (.....) and CD/DVD players for autos have special circuitry that creates a delay in the playback just so the player has time to "compare" data before it's played so that any "skips" in the laser tracking can be compensated for. which is not something you would want done while this machine is fileing on your frets. My point was that the DVD player doesn't BREAK as the result of being installed in a car. The fact (which I acknowledge) that the laser output is fed into a delay is not important. What's important is that the player works, reliably, month after month. Once again -- I don't claim to know whether a PLEK machine can be transported. As I said, it's a question I have, rather than an assertion I'm making.
  3. It's just a shame he didn't spot the 630 mm, not 630nm:pYeah, I feel bad about that.
  4. A nanometer (nm) is one billionth of a meter. One millimeter contains 1,000,000 (one million, or one thousand thousand) nanometers. So 630 nm is less than one thousandth of a millimeter. That is 10 times .01 millimeters. I'm just sayin'.
  5. None of those are meant to work at 0.01mmA DVD player doesn't work to a tolerance of
  6. I would seriously think transporting that sort of equipment in a van would be the quickest way to totally fuck it. No piece of laser equipment would be happy being transported and I would imagine the setup of the machine would be highly specialist.Of course, this will be a priority consideration. Unless the PLEK people say it can be subjected to the stress of being transported, I'm sure my friend would not plan to drive it around. It was a question we had, not a conclusion we'd reached. OTOH, some laser equipment is surprisingly sturdy. After all, there are laser-guided bombs, DVD players made for automobiles, and so forth.
  7. Day-yum. That is a good looking machine. (Ned wrestles with PLEK gas. Ned comes to his senses. It would make no sense for Ned *and* his friend to each own PLEK machines!) I see it fitting into a camper-van in a pinch. 5th wheel travel trailer or smallish RV easy as pie.
  8. They should know. post@plek.de Ha! A German company! Thx.
  9. I *am* talking about a PLEK machine itself, rather than a PLEK job. A friend of mine was thinking of buying one as an investment -- IOW, to actually do PLEK jobs for others. In addition to cost, I was also wondering whether the machinery or equipment could be made transportable -- could it be packed into a van or small truck? The idea was to travel to guitar shops or guitar shows, and do PLEK jobs on the spot.
  10. Oh, by the way, I've heard that Ed Roman has some very, very good deals available at his store in La Vegas, Nevada. I think you can also arrange to get these good deals via the Internet.
  11. I'm really enjoying this conversation about Ed Roman. I'd like to learn as much about Ed Roman as possible. Why? Because, as a guitarist and music enthusiast, I like to know what's happening in the music industry. Please keep these useful opinions, experiences and information coming. Thanks, everyone!
