1. I think it is fairly obvious that lyrics do not have to make sense for the song to be a hit but in my humble opinion debating whether they should make sense or not is like debating whether pink is a nicer colour than blue. Generally speaking, I have a personal preference for lyrics that do make sense but I have a number of favourites where the lyrics don't make any real sense to me. Usually when a song does appeal to me that I cannot make out the lyrics to or the lyrics don't make sense to me it will be because the song somehow reminds me of a beautifully made sculpture. Somehow the song has come together with so much texture, musical story and perhaps emotional impact that I tend to want to stand back and marvel at it rather than understand it.Nicely stated.
2. But now that you've stopped and thought about it, I'm sure, you can see how someone might take it that way. There are forums at HC where there is much latitude for verbal combat, but this isn't one of them. If folks want to tussle, they should take it someplace where that sort of thing is tolerated.
3. Rock really did die back when......they were doin' that crazy hand-jive?
4. his existence baffles the {censored} out of me.Here again, you're on the verge of an ad-hominem attack. This can lead to trouble.
5. God love 'em My sister moved to the south. Down there they bless your heart. Amusingly, you can say some pretty awful things about a person, if you bless their heart.
6. Paul loses me when he says, "I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello" Is it Paul doesn't understand why someone is leaving because of a personal reason that Paul is unaware of? Level 1: I don't know why you want to end the possibility of a relationship before we even try. I think we should give it a chance. Level 2: You're contrary for no good reason. I'm optimistic. You're pessimistic. I don't know why you do that.
7. Here's another one with lyrics that make no sense...The lyrics make perfect sense to me. On two levels. They're repeated to the point of absurdity, but they definitely make sense.
8. Are you sure it wasn't the grandparents that were smiling? Or maybe the great-grandparents. Or maybe there was some 80s show that resurrected it or something. I thought my generation in the early 50s was the last set of kids to be submitted to that, then only ~10 year old song. That's scary. There was a crusty old choir instructor who used to include it in choir concerts at least every other year, until she retired about 10 years ago. So any alumni from the HS has heard it. And yes. That is scary.
9. 100% Gibberish for sure, but probably the most awesomest non-sequiturs ever recordedMaybe the second most awesomest for that one.
10. One of the songs I really hated when I was a kid growing up was "Mairzy Doats." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mairzy_Doats... It (presumably) grew out of the double talk fad of the 40's (itself a presumed successor to the earlier pig latin fad)... My friend's sister teaches choir in a local HS. She had them perform that at a concert. All the parents in the audience smiled when they started. All the students in the audience had a WTF look on their faces, until the end. Then most of them laughed.
11. I prefer lyrics in a foreign language to those in my own that don't make sense. I have to say, if I think a writer is just stringing together nonsense -- and I have that feeling more than a little -- I feel cheated, like the guy/gal just doesn't care enough to put in the effort. That said, I don't think the meaning has to come out and hit you over the head. There are a lot of cryptic lyrics out there that can be fun, interesting, and thought-provoking to take apart and try to make sense of. But if you do that and you start getting the feeling that you're just being pulled along by the lyrical equivalent of a conversa-bot, who needs that? I like this. In particular the part I added bold to. But I like the rest of it, too.
