Members Shasta86
Hello, I have been asked to play in a church band. The first practice is tonight. Any tips? I am pretty good at drums, but I dont know what kind of beats to play. The church already has a electric drumset, and Im used to playing an acoustic. Any tips for that? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Members JakeTheSnake
don't even try to get fancy. licks don't always transfer from acoustic to electronic. ie, I went to play ghost notes on the snare pad, and they were all at the same volume. No good.
Members johnrobbsmusic
I play in my church band, and for me, after 3 years, it started getting boring so I started doing some crazy fills just for fun...some of the older members of the church didn't like it...but younger ones did, so let your style be swayed with the type/age of the audience
Members irnbru83
Depends what is being played. A lot of new contemporary christian bands are trying to shed the stereotype that all christian music sounds the same (bland). Some very intricate beats going on in new music. In my opinion, it detracts from the purpose of why you are playing in church when it gets all fancy. People didn't come to watch a show, or at least, that shouldn't be the motivation. I cut down most music to fairly generic rock beats. The beat is there so that the loopy bassist doesn't start wandering around on timing, not so that I'll get picked up by a record label. Having said all that, I love working around a slow 6/8 beat. So much open space for creativity, without being too busy.
Members race81
If they have a good e-kit...you won,t have any problems with fills and volume levels......cheap e-kit, well, keep it simple. Ive played in church for over 10 years, contemporary stuff. Don,t play to please the crowd, theres only one reason that matters. Its called a praise band for a reason. play from the heart, thats all that matters.

Its called a praise band for a reason. +1 I love playing in our Praise Band but, as said, it is not about us. Like Jake said, dynamics can be an issue. Our church has a Yamaha e kit and dynamics and cymbals are very different from an accoustic kit, in my opinion. In theory the e kits should help the sound guys but I find ours sounds very "electronic" (I know that sounds rather silly). In the grand scheme of worship though I imagine God is much more concerned about the hearts of the worshippers than the sound of the e kit. Members hwy145
play for the music, not for yourself. The path to hell is paved with self-indulgence!
Members Brasmonky
My tip would be to not assume it will be like most other bands. Where you have a few drinks, some shots, couple bong hits, maybe an 8 ball then hit the stage. I could be wrong tho, never played in front of god.
