  1. Thanks for the tip! I was hoping to get so real life references. It also appears that most do mastering with the 2 channel stereo mix. Is it also common to do mastering using all the recorded tracks? Seems like that would give them alittle more control over different aspects of the mix. Well that would be mixing your songs. I don't know if John does that, but I'm sure it would cost you more. The thing to do would be to contact him and visit about the whole process. Best of luck! Joel
  2. Greg, Check with John Scrip at MASSIVE MASTERING. I've not had him do any work for me personally, but I've known John from different forums on the 'net for several years. Seems like an honest and very knowledgeable man. I think he also will do a sample mastering for you. Best of luck, Joel

  4. I've used the M177 on acoustic guitar, yes. It sounds neutral to me, ie, no severe bumps across the frequency response. Basically you can make it sound somewhat like your guitar. The nice thing about micing an acoustic guitar; you can move the mic around until you find what works for the song you're recording. If it needs more bass, move the mic closer to the sound hole. More string jangle, position the mic in front of the neck. Always experment with position. And remember...... Enjoy! Joel

In the $100 to $150 range I'd look at the CAD M177 or better yet, the M179 multi-pattern mic. Very nice sounding and hard to beat for the money. The M177 was my favorite vocal mic 'til I could afford something better. Joel
  7. Mark, I think I'd state your equipment changes in a new post, but edit your original to indicate that you've recently updated you rig. That way any new readers will know that the rig mentioned in your original post is no longer current. Just a thought. Joel
  8. Thanks, Sinner! I haven't been to the ' Vault in some time. I'd DL'd what they had at the time, but don't remember the mic pres. Gotta give those a try. Thanks, Joel
  9. Sinner, Can you share a link to the impulses? Joel
  10. I currently use a combination as follows: In my "studio": Gateway P4 2.0 w/1.5 GB RAM 160GB data HD(split 4 ways) 80 GB system HD (removable, for music only) M-Audio 2496 Sonar 3.1.1 Pro Tons of plugs, both free & purchased Racked for moble recording, ( I don't have room for more than 1 person, so I do most of my recording in other places): Alesis HD24 I have a docking station to dump the Alesis files to Sonar for mixing, etc. Also still have my Tascam 788 setup(CD burner and 80 GB HD, both external) Don't use it much anymore but probably couldn't get anything for it if I tried to sell it. Actually, I still have a few songs on it I need to get moved! Mics by Shure, Sennheiser, Audio Technica, Sony, CAD, AKG, ADK, Audix, DBX, PPA, MXL, Stedman and Electro Voice. The usual rack gear consisting of FXs, EQs, comps, mic pres, etc from Yamaha, Lexicon, DBX, Allen & Heath(mixers), ART, Aphex, FMR, Ashley, Antaries and Behringer. Other stuff like monitors, headphones, power amps, etc, etc! Oh, and a few instuments! .......and we call this a hobby?!?! Well, not really anymore as I do make a fair bit of money from it all. Joel
