  1. I finally saw the movie too... about a month after you guys. I'm a fan of Jimmy Page and the Edge. Didn't know much about Jack White. I find the similarities and contrasts among the three guitarists interesting. PLAYING STYLE/TECHNOLOGY: - The Edge's sound is heavily based on the use of technology (delays and other effects). He plays simple parts that really come alive when you apply effects to them. It seems like his playing is more about the sound than the notes. Not much emotion in his playing. - In contrast, White seems to eschew technology. He plays simple stuff too, but it is raw and filled with attitude. - Page seems to be a happy medium. His playing is more complex than the other two, but he often embraces technology to add color to his sound. BLUES INFLUENCE - Jimmy Page, like all the great British rock guitarists of the 60's, is influenced by the blues, although the movie doesn't really play up that angle. - White seems really influenced by the rawness, simplicity, and lyrical content of the early blues artists - The Edge's playing seems to have very little blues influence. PUNK INFLUENCE - White seems to have that punk rock aesthetic with his attitude and his belief you don't need expensive gear to be a musician. - The Edge cites 70s punk as inspirational. When they started U2, they couldn't play but they embraced punk's "do it yourself" attitude. 70s punk was a rebellion against the complexity of rock. Anyone should be able to start a band. It was a reaction to bands like Zeppelin among others. - Jimmy Page was already a star before punk came along. But isn't punk almost like a return to the garage rock of the 60s? SLIDE GUITAR The slide playing of Jimmy Page and Jack White seems to be blues-based while the Edge's does not. There is one song where they trade slide solos (In my Time of Dying?) and the Edge's slide playing is quite different than the other two. I thought it sounded really interesting even if it didn't seem to quite fit the aesthetic of the song. PERSONALITIES: - Jimmy Page has a child-like enthusiasm about guitars and music. He seems to be aware and interested in the music of the other two. He seems to really love guitar. He also seems very friendly, gracious. A true gentleman. - The Edge also seems very friendly and he too is a true gentleman. He seems genuinely interested in Page's playing which is interesting since his playing is like the antithesis of Page's playing. - Jack White seems to have a lot of attitude. I think he exudes a bit of negative energy. He is anti-technology, anti-gear, anti-tone (LOL), even anti-guitar in his early days. He seems like he harbors hostility towards people from his high school days. I just did not care for the guy. Although he does teach you that you don't need good gear to be an artist.
